Title: How to create DVD-Video form wav + cue?
Post by: itisljar on 2011-03-03 13:20:52
Hello all.

Well, I have somewhat specific need: I want to create DVD-V disk with 12 new age albums I own. I have made uncompressed DVD-A disk with 6 albums with DVDA Author, but it doesn't always play gaplesly, which is important. Now, I know I have to convert the wavs to 48 kHz sampling, and it has to be compressed with AC3, but I can use fairly large bitrate there, so sound is not a problem - also, it will be used just as background music.
I would like to have simple menu to select the album, and then chapters where tracks begin. Except for the menu, there is no need for any video except black, eventually some background image with track name.

For conversion to 48 kHz I will use Foobar. For AC3 encoding it could be inside authoring program, or I could do it - but the question is, WHICH authoring program supports importing of wav (or ac3) + cuesheet to make DVD-V disk out of it? Of if I need few programs, tell me. I prefer freeware, but if needed, I can visit some of my friends who have few professional authoring programs to do it.

If something is not clear, ask me, my english is a bit rusty

I used Audio DVD Creator v1.9 (it makes DVD-Video disks, don't be mislead by it's name  ), but unfortunately it's not freeware. I was satisfied with the result.
Maybe someone else can recommend something free...

Cheers!

I don't know of a DVD authoring program that uses a cue sheet.*  But, any authoring program will allow you to manually set the chapter points.**  Most authoring programs will accept audio in a variety of formats and encode it to DVD-compatible AC3 or LPCM.

All of the following are for making regular video DVDs, but worst case, you should be able to use a still image (even if the still image is a blank-black screen).

DVDStyler[/u] (http://www.dvdstyler.org/) is FREE!!! (open source) and it appears to be a very powerful program.  I don't use it because it has some issues with widescreen menus.  (And, when I tried it, the documentation was not up to date.)

I use DVD-Lab[/u] (http://www.mediachance.com/dvdlab/) ($100-250 USD).    (There is a fully-functional 30-day free trail.)  I've never made an audio-only DVD, and the weird thing is that their web page says you need the $250 version.  But, I could easily make a MPEG-2 video file which is a still image showing the song title (or something like that).

Now, DVD-Lab has some quirks...  It's an authoring program only...  It's not for A/V editing and there are no audio or video encoders, so you have to feed-in DVD-compliant audio & video files.  I think it has a minimal burner, but I use a separate application to burn the "image" to disc.  And, you can't preview the audio!!!  This is a royal pain when you're working on an audio-related DVD, where the audio timing is more important for chapter timing than video scene changes.  In your case you have a cue sheet, so you  can set the chapters without listening.

Corel Movie Factory[/b][/u] (http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/us/en/Product/1173965700889) ($70 USD) is an easy-to-use DVD-authoring program.  (I have't tried the current version.)

I had no idea that English was not your native language...

* DVD-Lab does allow you to import a chapter list file, but I think you'd have to edit the format of your regular audio cue sheet.

**  The key for gapless playback is to create one title (movie), and then add chapters for the start of each song.  There is generally a gap between titles, but a chapter is just a marker in the file.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking - one wav file with the whole album (title), and adding chapters based on info from cue file.
