To Resize Embedded Album Art or not to

Whats your views on Embedded Album Art sizing and shape consistency?

Most MP3 players have different max sizes (like my iriver clix gen2 im relatively sure is 100x100) but can scale down. And various Windows/Linux/Mac players have different max sizes for the art, and sometimes can even show them at any size the screen can handle in different modes (windows media players "album art" visualizer comes to mind)

But most album art you get, from any source (http://findmycover.com/ for instance) will have the art in various sizes, usually 500x500/300x300 and sometimes lower, but not all albums come in all sizes, and some are slightly off, like 300x296, or some are just rectangle (some imported CD's use different shaped cases)


Part of me wants order and to make them all 500x500 or 300x300, and crop the odd shaped ones. But another half doesnt wanna lose any potential quality when played in applications that can make use of it. And what would happen for ones where there is only smaller pictures, make them bigger?

The Mp3's I rip are usually 320 bitrate, so the difference in size between the 2 picture sizes in prettymuch nothing.

Whats your views on this probably obsessive compulsive topic?

I go for

Class A - 600x600 or higher
Class B - 500x500
Class C - 300x300 higher
Class D - 300x300 or lower

I can't stand Class D.
Class C is acceptable for rare albums.

Width = Height was a must by me for Artwork but with the introduction of DVD covers I kinda relaxed this a bit.

I dont get it, is the Class A, b, c thing some sort of proprietary program thing? I dont remember seeing options like that in tagging programs like MP3Tag or Easytag. Could you explain a bit more what that is?

Ahhh

I guess I diddnt get what it meant, like if some programs can add more then 1 picture i think to embedded art. Or if you try for 600x600 and if there isnt any, go for the next best instead, no need for consistency, and just grabbing whatever is the best (unless its some crazy 1000x1000 dimension file )


And just outta curiosity, what would you do for album art that seems to only get pulled up in a slightly inconsistent size like 500x494 or 300x296 or something like that. Just leave it or open it up in Gimp/photoshop and crop it and enlarge it by a few pixels? (or pull a amazon and add white to it )

Hmm, guess it depends how most portable mp3 players handle it, wonder if they show them in normal proportions like standard picture viewing in them, or if they stretch to fit a square.

Because I download most of my artwork from Itunes I use the 600x600 size consistency. I would not use a lower resolution for my FLAC collection.

I diddnt think there was any album art with itunes, almost every app ive seen that adds album art to Itunes songs uses the Amazon database, and prettymuch Never has anything over 500x500.

Infact come to think of it, ive never really seen anything 500x500+ from the various online album art databasses.

Zaskar, for slightly inconsistent size like 500x494 or 300x296 or something like that, I'd resize it to 500x500 if the image contains only text or manage to somehow crop other sides to get it to 494x494 then resize it to 500x500.
