iPod - different directories

I installed the iPod plugin and was thrilled that it seemed to work.  However, when I looked at the iPod directory tree, I noticed that all the songs from a single album had been placed into directories on the iPod.  Each song was placed into its own directory.  Did I do something wrong?

I eventually want to erase everything on my iPod and repopulate it using FooBar so I have a file structure with useful names.  But having a directory for each of several thousand songs doesn't seem good.

Also, how do I delete songs from the iPod using FooBar?
