Inexpensive, accurate outboard audio solution to laptop

I have worked in studios much of my life.  I am a bit demanding and my work often requires better and more versatile resources than I can afford or much less,  find.

I am wondering what outboard audio connectors others might have used for mixing to or connecting to their laptops which might be low in distortion and not in the NASA budget domain.

I have been thinking that my best solution might be a small portable console (something currently in use for other applications.)  I have in the past utilized common studio interfaces,  RCA,  ,  1/4 inch, common mini-jacks, XLR,  and rarely fiber optic.  I have thought that a good 4-8 channel mixer with some type of USB interface might suffice as a solution,  but I have seen some small units which have offered these options occasionally that were made precisely for the laptop situation.

I currently work on an XP computer,  laptop or otherwise.
