editing ID3 tags in bulk

I have about 7000+ MP3 made using EAC and Lame 3.96.1 (APX). Total file size about 50GB.

I put these on my ipod via itunes. However when i looked at the files in itunes many files were worngly tagged. the common errors are as follows:
1. No genre or wrong genre for an album or for an artist (multiple albums)
2. artist and album names interchanged
3. Album name has been wrongly spelt

now correcting these tags one by one is cumbersome. 7000+ Mp3s will drive me insane.

itunes does not allow me to select multiple songs and tag them together or tag all songs from a particular artsit with the sme genre etc...

so i tried Media Monkey and MP3BookHelper but when I look at teh same files in these progam tha Artist and Genre fields are empty for many (70%) of the Mp3s.

Any program that can do this?

Even after you've found and figured out what software to use, you may find the bottleneck to be your pre-sorting for each script/fix. For example, you need to find all the ones with artist - album switched and deal with them as a group. And the genre tags you will need to check album by album. I'm referring to the delays in just deciding which genre certain albums should belong to. And do you want strict ID3v1.1 compatibility in terms of genre? Winamp extensions ok? Just for certain genres? Do you want uniform cases? Gotta find that script and learn how to use it.

In short, fixing that many tags that have all kinds of different problems will take some time no matter what tool you use. It'll probably take a long while, but it'll be worth it. Good luck.

IMHO, the absolute BEST MP3 tagger ANYWHERE. (Apologies to all Foobar users).

Umm.. Both SHIFT and CTRL work in the Windows version of iTunes. Select a song, then SHIFT-select another one to select the whole range in between them. Or hold CTRL and select them one by one. Works fine in Windows. This is the Windows standard, and yes, I just tried it, and it works with no problems.

Might check to see if your keyboard is working properly.

I had used EAC and LAME to create these files. I hope Rip'N'Tag it has not erased all  the tags I created.

i just noticed that the file names are all changed too. now they have track numbers in front of the names so the names read as
01 - 'Round Midnight, 01 -1812 Overature, Op. 49, 01 - 1984 etc....

my guess is Rip'N'Tag it has used the filename to retag the file! god that is insane. How do I undo this? dont tell me to burn 700 CDs again.

First off, I've never used iTunes, so I might be totally off. Keeping that in mind, it sounds to me as if you might suffer from wrong tag types. Try checking which types (id3v1, the various id3v2.x versions, ape) are written into your files. I have no idea what iTunes needs there, however. I suppose it's id3v2 of some kind? MP3Tag gives you some control over which types to keep, though you have to dig into the settings a bit. Maybe this helps? I wouldn't know myself, obviously

navin: For crying out loud, stop doing things. If one thing messes it up, then continuing to do that thing will continue to mess things up.

Stop. Just stop.

I never heard of RipNTag, but Tag&Rename and The Godfather both work great with iTunes. I suggest using them instead. And since you already screwed up all your files, you'll likely have to retag them or if you can't figure out where they go, rerip them.

Next time, work on a backup copy of the library. Don't make global changes that you can't undo unless you're making those changes to a copy. Pretty simple, really.

E: iTunes uses ID3 tags, any version. I suggest using ID3v2.3 version tags in most cases, as these are the most compatible.

Tag & Rename has a test feature where it will tell you what your changes will look like before you actually peform them.  Also, it has the ability to wipe out all the existing tags and check online databases to retrieve tag information.  It's probably worth a look.
