Foobar-like customization on Linux? and my introduction

Is there a media player that is as easily customized as foobar2k for Linux?
Also, hello, this is my first post.

I was thinking about that. Are there any accessories I need to account for?
I tried DeaDBeeF, but I don't know what to think.

Nice avatar, I think you and I will get along well

Unfortunately there's nothing like foobar2000 for linux at all. Having said that, mpd (music player daemon) is a nice piece of software - it's customizable, stable, fast and lightweight. You can either control mpd solely via console or use a client (i.e. mpc (console), ncmpc (console), ncmpcpp (console), sonata(GTK), QMPDclient (Qt)) to access your library.

Unfortunately I don't think there's a player for Linux that's comparable to foobar. I imagine most people accustomed to foobar run it through WINE.

I think it's a shame that an OS so often touted for it versatility is missing such an app as foobar ... The typical response on a Linux forum would be something like "Program one yourself!", but I think the developer of foobar should seriously consider, if not going open source, then at least releasing a binary compile for Linux.

Give a look at Quodlibet http://code.google.com/p/quodlibet/

Although I think there is already thread like this on HA, this is my choice also, together with Deadbeef. foobar2000 under Wine for library management
BTW Deadbeef has new beta version 0.52b1 (as from month ago) w/o major changes. When Alexey implements media library feature (currently not high priority) I guess it will be my main player.

What do you mean by Library management? I read that wrong, I think.

I process incoming music with foobar first - base integrity checking, RG, tagging then rename/move at right place
QL has also great tagger and similar features, but unfortunatelly some fields aren't compatible with foobar way, so for me...

check out my post on Beets, it's incredible for tagging.
It won't do integrity checking and such.
I mean, F2K's is good too.
Just a suggestion

I tried a dozen or more players, over a period of a year or so. None of them came even remotely close to foobar2000. Many of them coped very badly with a medium sized library in the tens of gigs, lagging & hanging for minutes on end, or just plain freezing. Several of them made a mess of existing tags, making changes ("fixes") without asking, & handling 'various artists' albums badly.

As a player alone, Clementine is good, & as a tagger alone, Puddletag. Library management wise, nothing.

I particularly remember Banshee & DeaDBeeF driving me mad, because they seemed at first ok, but turned out to have some show-stopping flaw for me. They would be worth a look now, just for coming close a while back. I don't recall all the others I tried - most of them were uninstalled within a couple of minutes.

Since finally getting foobar2000 running audio glitch free on Wine, I've barely looked back.

For ripping, Asunder is good, or for damaged discs & moments of obsession, EAC on Wine, although setup involves a bit of effort.

None of this of course addresses your actual request for customisationabilityness... just basic functionality, usability, & performance. Good luck, & report back if you find anything of note.

I've heard of Aqualung. Is it as customizable?

Not as much but there are a lot of advanced options in setup. I'd say somewhere between foobar & winamp. There reason i like it is that its development is conservative unlike those other 'mega' players. Also most other players go through too many changes and rewrites .I use windows ATM and there is also a win32 build. Another to consider is audacious - a winamp clone but recent builds haver a foobar like interface option as well as the old winamp one. Its plays a lot of formats.

OTOH - I had foobar running fine in WINE - I'd say 95% of stuff worked. The key is to find a version of foobar that runs nice and then a version of WINE that is stable with it (stuff can break). Sometimes there are binaries but its good to compile it then stick to that version for as long as u can.
