Coil whine and static noise with an RCA connection

I connected a monitor to my "Behringer U-Control UCA222" DAC with an RCA cable to use my headphones with a gaming console. I use the same DAC and headphones with my computer and didn't want keep changing the connections. I have to hit the "monitor" switch (see the picture) to transmit audio from the monitor and this immediately introduces coil whine and some other static noise.

I don't in any way know if this is a sensible setup. As both Xbox One and the DAC have an optical port, should I purchase an optical cable?
