Title: Genre Database?
Post by: indybrett on 2004-07-05 20:25:22
Is there a database where one can look up the genre of an artist? Freedb.org doesn't really seem to suit this well.

For example, I may want to look up the Dave Matthews Band to see what genre they are classified as. Keeping in mind, they might be classified as several, depending on who input the data, but there will probably (hopefully) be a majority.

I want to use this to help me add these tags to my files in a consistent manner.

I've often been thinking of something like that... when tagging my files, for example. Most people just type "Pop" or "Rock" for everything... (in freedb.org). I didn't find any better database, would be really interesting to have something like that... But I think it's not that easy with those genres, because there are so many, and the number is still growing! Perhaps there should also be sub-genres or something like that... don't know really how to describe that.

I use allmusic.com (http://www.allmusic.com/) for such a task.

A good start. Searching on DMB resulted with this:

Genres:Rock
Styles:United States of America

Guess the genre data could be improved upon just a bit.
