Either they're plain MP4 files, renamed, and they'll work with a .m4a extension. Or, if they're encrypted, they'll never work.
Hi, unlike .m4b format, when I convert audiobook into multitrack Opus file, my audiobook reader in phone doesn't see the individual chapters within.
Is that shortcomming of the player, or was the Opus file created wrong way? foobar still can see the subsong idexes as separate tracks.
That would be MP4 chapters. Opus does support chapters a different way, but I guess the phone doesn't support chained Ogg streams.

Yet an additional question, if i want to stick with AAC for audiobooks, what's the recommended conversion preset for smallest files yet transparent. I'm currently using downmix to mono and HE CVBR 64 which is in real 40-48kbps, which may be superfluously high for this purpose.
There is. It's the same as the audiobook / chaptered variant of the .ogg format. Basically, several individual stream files with different serial numbers, all appended to each other. Each stream has its own tag. foobar2000 has supported this for .ogg Vorbis files since practically the beginning, and also supports this for Ogg .opus files. Apparently, Android could not be bothered to support this.
