Title: List of DAE Drive Features
Post by: westgroveg on 2005-03-07 05:21:58
This thread will be used to gather an accurate list of DAE drive features. Just post your drive(s) features in this thread & I will add them to my database.

The lists main purpose is to provide sample offsets for users who don't have one of EAC's key CD's & help people decide which is an optimal drive for use with EAC & which is a suitable drive for accurate results with CD Paranoia.

I will not add any incomplete records into the database so you must provide all the required fields.

Required Fields:Example:

Code: [Select]
Manufacturer - SAMSUNG
Type - CD-ROM
Model - SH-152A
Accurate Stream - YES
Caching - NO
C2 Error Info - YES
Overread - Lead Out
Sample Offset - +12
Firmware - C504

Results so far:

Heh, not so long time ago AgentMil started the same topic and you (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=30336&view=findpost&p=262595) were the first person who suggested that it doesn't make much sense
Well, IMO it still doesn't make sense as there already are at least 3 web-sites with all these data. Of course it won't hurt to have another one here on HA, but lets make it the way it should be then - first of all providing firmware version of the drive for which someone submits the data is a must. Secondly, "Disable Cache" is confusing, you should change it to "Drive caches audio". Also, in the table there always should be a "+" or "-" sign before Sample Offset value (which in fact is an Offset Correction value). And since the table is supposed to help people choose a good drive, other EAC-related data wouldn't hurt (like CD-TEXT/UPC/ISRC read/write capability, gap/index retrieval method and accuracy, read command, write offset if it's a burner, etc).

Negative values will have a "-" minus sign.

I think I have the most improtant DAE related drive data.

I will also release a .xls file  if/when the database starts to really populate, that file can then be used to import the data I have gathered into the Offset Base, Accuraterip, SatCP, & any other web site or program that wants to have a drive feature database.

can you get a log output from Nero CD Speed?

If so you should ask for log submissions from neros Advanced DAE, this would be more reliable then peoples reporting. Better yet, quite a few people here work at nero, maybe they could suggest nero add a drive feature set upload to a database for others to access.

For sake of readibility positive values should have a "+" plus sign too. Red background for drives which overread capabilities don't match their offset (for example overread into lead-in and positive offset), and yellow (or green?) background for the ones which do match (for example overread into lead-in and negative offset) would be nice too.

Nero CD Speed reports combined read/write offset which alone is rather useless, not to mention that Advenced DAE Quality Test is a drive-killer (harmonica test  ).

Could you change the format that the results list is in, it looks like it's a jpg (blurry) i think a png would be easier to read.

I also think putting + or - infront of the offset value is a good idea

Hmm, the SAMSUNG - SH-152A looks pretty good. $15 shipped and +offset correction with lead out over reading. Can anyone confirm these features? This would result  in perfect rips correct?

@westgroveg
Is there any chance of getting a key which tells us what the colors mean ?

Would it be possible to split the manufacturer name from the type field?

At some point I can make a MySQL database from your database file and it would be nice to design a simple web interface so we can filter out particular manufacturers. It would be much easier to do if the manufacturer had it's own field.

Unfortunateson - It is because you are using a different pressing and therefore you should only rely on results you get more than once. -If EAC reports that you cant overread why have you posted otherwise ? -Martin.

Edit: When you do the EAC offset test with a different pressing disc or even a disc thats not in the database then you can still trust the overreading capability part of the test.

Yes Unfortunateson, could you clear up whether EAC reports the drives can overread lead out or not overread at all?

What I may do eventually is host a lossless copy of my EAC Test CD. People can download it, burn it to CD with their burner, then extract & compare with the original wav which will give you your drives write sample offset, then you take away that value from the read offset EAC reports with the CD you created, thus giving you an exact read sample offset.

sorry about the confusion... EAC reports neither the IDE1008 or DVD-16X6S overread, but it only finds one of my CDs in its database, where accuraterip finds many of them, and gives both drives an offset of +12.  And the caching of the drives are reversed in your graph.
Title: List of DAE Drive Features

Unfortunateson - AccurateRip dosent check for overreading capability. And even if you have overreading enabled in EAC and dosent get a sync error on the end of the last track then you cannot be certain that your drive can overread. Some drives report a sync error but others dosent, and just insert null samples instead. When you do the EAC offset test, then make sure to use an original cd. It dosent matter if its in the database or not because you only check for overreading capability of your drive. -Martin.

Just to keep people updated:

I've now created the MySQL database with some php pages that display these drive features in a table, along with a basic search tool (not really required until the database gets alot bigger). There is also a registration and submission form so people can register and submit their own drive details. So ultimately, do please continue to submit your drives features here. But, you can wait and directly use the form at a later date.

I hope to bring the site online within the next week after some more testing has been done.

Cheers.

I would remove the Matching column along with blue colour (OK), and mark two columns (Overread & Sample Offset) with a good colour if overread & offset match, or with a bad colour if overread & offset don't match. Good colour should be green, and the bad/red one a bit brighter (black text isn't too readable on current one). It's also time to switch to PNG!

I'd be interested to hear what others think about this. My html table also has the Matching column, like the .xls file above. But I'm considering whether to implement your suggestion. I think it's a good idea since it removes a column. Below the table I'd need to add some text to explain what the colours mean but that need only be a sentance or two.

I'm not sure what you mean here. If overread & offset match then it doesn't matter how big the offset is. And you don't seem to colour the Sample Offset column anyway.

What I mean is that if we have a drive with an offset of say 10 samples that can't overread it's not the same as a drive with an offset of 1000 samples that can't overread yet both drives would have the Sample Offset field marked red.

We would need to agree upon a color rating based upon how long the offset is & if the drive can overread.

Also can overreading into a non matching value be useful at all? if not then I agree a drive that can't overread into the corresponding value should be marked red

How did you get the positive symbols to appear in Excel?

In DAE, overreading into a non matching value is completly useless I think. Anyway, I have an idea of giving scores, so colour marking could stay simple as I suggest, and there wouldn't be a subjective limit where the non-matching offset becomes too bad.
The scoring could be like that:
1. If Accurate Stream is available then score = 1000, otherwise score = 0
2. If drive doesn't cache then score = score + 1000, otherwise score = score + 0
3. If C2 is available then score = score + 1000, otherwise score = score + 0
4. If overread & offset match then score = score + 1000, if they don't match then score = score - |offset|
So, score of Pioneer DVD-ROM DVD-106 would be 1000 + 0 + 0 - 102 = 898 rutra80 marks
And score of Plextor CD-ROM PX-40TS would be 1000 + 1000 + 1000 + 1000 = 4000 (full scale)
That way even the website that evereux prepares could have a "Sort by score" option to view the best drive for DAE.
Of course weight of Accurate Stream, Caching, C2, or overreading & offset can be higher or lower than 1000.

EAC doesn't support my Pioneer 106 DVD-RW for writing either.

make a EAC offset cd on a drive that has it correct write offset set and use that CD and EAC will find the offset for you.

Another way is

*Note - Gap detection|detection accuracy needs to be set to Secure on both drives first

Put a audio CD in to a drive that has the correct read offset set, press F4 to detect any gaps, then select a track and copy it to WAV format, it is also a good idea to rename the resulting WAV file to the name of the drive that you copied it off.

Put the same cd into the drive you want to find the read offset, press F4 to detect any gaps again, copy the same track that you copied orginally to WAV format and rename the WAV file to the name of the drive it was copied from.

Compare the two files and there is your read offset value (repeated samples will put a + in front of the value, missing samples will put a - in front of the value)

So, score of Pioneer DVD-ROM DVD-106 would be 1000 + 0 + 0 - 102 = 898 rutra80 marks

Sounds OK to me, anyone have any suggestions?

The color rating for the Sample Offset could be:

If drive can Overread I/O = Yellow
If Offset & Overread match = Yellow
If Sample Offset is <1000 = Blue
If Sample Offset is >1000 samples = Red

Suggestions welcome too

I didn't think it was necessary until we encountered a drive with non-matching features for different firmwares revisions.

PS: evereux's site is going to be pretty amazing, after it's finished I don't think we will need another DAE drive features DB. All drive features submitted to me will be imported into his DB & it might also contain The Coaster Factory entries too.

Many of the items would be difficult to automatically detect:

Manufacturer: No problem
Type: No problem
Model: No problem
Accurate Stream: No problem
Caching: This one is hit and miss to detect,
C2 Error Info: The firmware could lie about it's implementation / implementation could be poor you would need a cd with intentional errors
Overread: You would need a specific audio cd with sound data (values not 0) right upto the lead in / out, some drives when trying to overread just return 0's, you wouldn't spot this unless you had a cd as mentioned.
Sample Offset: No problem
Firmware: Is this drive specific?

AccurateRip contained pretty much all the items that could be autodetected with any audio cd, it has the Sample Offset and Accurate Stream.

Yeah, that's what I'm talking all the time - if there will be scores there's no need for subjective limit where offset becomes too bad. For readibility & simplicity sake there also should be only 2 colours: green = good, red = bad, and both overread & offset columns should always have the same colour (green if they match and red if they don't match, so the Matching column can be removed). We can give more colours to scores but IMO it doesn't make sense either.

All complete records from The Coaster Factory will be included in the DAE Drive Features Database evereux & I have been working on. I don't think there would be any easy way of importing the records from EAC-Audio.de & the other sources you have listed do not provide all the required fields.

First we want to get an initial version of the database up & running. After that we may explore better methods of detection & submission of DAE drive features to the database.

How did you get the positive symbols to appear in Excel?

You must format the cells as text and add a space before the positive symbol.

Or use a custom format on the cell like "+0;-0;0" - or something fancy like "[blue]+0;[red]-0;[green]0"

(right-click > Format Cells... > Number Tab > Custom Category > enter format)

You can also use conditional formatting (Format > Conditional Formatting... > ... )

Edit: in fact adding a space to turn the cell into text is really bad practise.  By doing so you are poluting your data and relinquishing any possibility to use the figures in mathematical operations.  You shouldn't corrupt your data for the sake of aesthetics - especially as XL provides various ways to solve this minor problem.

The Ricoh drive is a CD-RW, and has a long history of acting weird.

I've not thoroughly tested the C2 feature of the Ricoh drive, it works for the Toshiba though.

Accurate Stream: No problem
Caching: This one is hit and miss to detect,
C2 Error Info: The firmware could lie about it's implementation / implementation could be poor you would need a cd with intentional errors
i cannot comment on accurate stream, but "drive caches" can always be turned ON and "c2 error info" can always be turned OFF as a fail-safe fallback. all you get is a speed decrease with added safety.

especially c2 was unreliable with my liteon ltr-24103s. the drive reports c2 but repeatedly reripping a track would yield a different checksum each time. scary. so better be safe than sorry and keep those two options at their slow-but-reliable setting. my opinion.

edit: unless you mass-rip hundreds of cds where you need the speed. but i'd very carefully verify that the drive rips correctly. usually, the slightest sign of a checksum mismatch or similar makes me run screaming from ever using that option again. but that's just me :)

I don't think it's worth posting your results in this thread anymore. The list at the beginning of this thread is no longer kept up to date.

The results from the last spreadsheet have been imported into the database at http://daefeatures.co.uk (http://daefeatures.co.uk) and that essentially is the master now. It could be wiser to register there and add your drive features that way.

that was supposed to be a quote of the first person to list the 4120B i removed some other details not relating to my drive and it seems to have broken the formating slightly (although the find post thing works). i simply want to know why two people claimed that the GSA-4120B is C2 capable when all my test in eac result in "probably not capable" or something like that

The LG/HL-DT-ST GSA-4120B as well as its relatives (e.g. GSA-4163B) does indeed report C2 errors. (You will find that if you test a newer EAC with a scratched CD.) And it does not only report those errors, it's one of very few drive families that does so very correctly.

But the LG drives (GSA-4xxxB) do also cache audio data although EAC falsely claims they would not. (They actually cache 37KB audio*.)

And yes, they are able to read hidden tracks (track 1/index 0) although EAC has problems to show them correctly.

(*) The fact that this drive (or any like it) caches 37kB is a NON-ISSUE when it comes to ripping with EAC since the smallest amount of data requested by EAC is 64kB!!!

What about the GSA-4082N?

It's a slim drive (it's on a laptop) and EAC reports;

AccurateRip : Yes
Caches Audio: No
C2 Error Info: Yes

Does anyone know how can I, for sure, determine if the drive caches audio data and reports correct c2 error information?

Thanks

AFAIK Feurio! (http://feurio.com/) has some more advanced caching-detection features than EAC, and there's a nice C2 error test in Nero CD-DVD Speed (http://www.cdspeed2000.com/) (menu Extra/Advanced DAE Quality Test/Error Test).

There's an outdated help file, changelog can be helpful too.
Simulate means that when testing burning speed, nothing will be written onto a disc (it will just simulate writing, with laser turned off).
RAW is a low-level method of burning which allows copying of error correction codes & subchannel data, useful in case of copy-protected discs.

Well, if you simulate then after the tests the disc is still blank, if you don't simulate then it will be full of test data (so if it's not rewritable it's kinda wasted).
As for RAW, I see it only in overburning test, so it probably helps to determine if your drive can overburn in RAW & non-RAW modes.

Samsung SH-S223Q
Firmware: SB01
Caching: No
Accurate Stream: Yes
C2 Error Info: Yes
Read Offset Correction: +6
Gap Detection Mode: A
Overread: Don't think so, only checked for the lead-out
HTOA: Yes -- HOWEVER, EAC reports a timing problem a few seconds before track 1 index 1, and when I compared the rip to the same one I'd done with my Pioneer DVR-111D (which unfortunately doesn't want to read CDs anymore ), there were 25 frames of digital silence at that area.
Other observations:  Seems to read catalog numbers okay.  ISRCs, on the other hand, are a bit messed up.  For example, it reads "SC]QF0703807" when it should be "SEVGT0703807" -- the text part is wrong but the numbers are correct.

EDIT:  I figured out how to get a perfect copy of the HTOA with CDex, see 6 posts down.

Also, I discovered that the ISRCs can be read properly with CDRDAO (which you probably already have in your EAC folder).  Run "cdrdao scanbus" from the command prompt and copy your device number (e.g. "2,0,0").  Then run "cdrdao read-toc --device 2,0,0 mytoc.txt" (replace "2,0,0" with your device number) and it will scan the disc and write all TOC information including ISRCs to a text file.  This also works on my Lite-On SHM-165P6S which doesn't normally read ISRC's properly either.

Sounds like a "no" to me.

Sounds like a "no" to me.

Well, it's better than nothing.  It did manage to get the other 2 minutes bit-for-bit correct, and the only 2 CDs I have with music in the HTOA go to analog silence by 2 seconds before track 1 index 1.  But that's not good enough for perfectionists like me .

Well maybe it is a yes.  What happens when you try in Secure mode?

Also, when you mention the ability to overread, you said you only checked for the lead out.  Did you try EAC's built-in test?  It is included with the test to detect the read sample offset correction.

I still get that bit of silence in secure mode, EAC shows a sync error and tries to reread.

I couldn't find a CD for EAC's offset test.  I used to have one but I'm not sure where it went, I'll look tomorrow.  I tested by using CD where I know the last track has non-zero samples up to (and past) the end, but I end up with 6 samples of silence at the end even with the overread option checked.

Any old disc should do for that test. EDIT: or new disc, pardon my figure of speech.

What happens when you try to rip the HTOA disc as an image or as a range that also includes the rest of the first track?

EDIT2: This makes me wonder your sync error is a bug with EAC.  Have you tried dBpoweramp?

EAC's offset test says "None" for overread.

dBpoweramp reports a read error also and aborts ripping the rest of the track.

Back to EAC, I tried extracting a range that included index 1 of track 1 also, which didn't help.  I noticed that the location of the silence was slightly different (by ~10 frames) as well as the duration (25 vs 21 frames) depending on whether burst mode or secure mode was used.  It was consistent, such that any 2 burst rips would always turn out the same, for example.  Then I tried unchecking the "Drive is capable of retrieving C2 error information" box, and for the first disc this still resulted in 21 frames of silence (although again in a slightly different but consistent location).  When I tried the second disc the whole thing came out bit-identical to the rip I'd done on my Pioneer drive !

So I kind of figured that the drive was behaving differently around this area depending on which sector reading started at.  Then I thought to try CDex, which with default settings had some silence also.  I looked through the options, where I noticed that the number of sectors per read was configurable.  I changed it to 1, and sure enough it was able to read the HTOA on both discs identical to my Pioneer rips .

I'll describe what has to be done in CDex for any others with this drive since it's not quite straightforward.  First, in the drive settings, uncheck "Enable Jitter Correction" and set "Read Sectors" to 1.  Then select "Extract a section of the CD" from the Convert menu.  Make sure the Start Position and Stop Position are set to the first track.  Now, for the Start Position, it has to be set to a negative value, but CDex won't allow you to type this in normally.  However, if you type a negative number in Notepad or something, you can paste it into CDex.  Just come up with a negative number longer than the length of the HTOA, e.g. one of mine was a bit over 2 minutes, so I typed -3 in Notepad, then copy and paste that into the minutes area of the Start Position.  You can leave seconds/frames at 0.  For the Stop Position which is inclusive like EAC, you'd want it to be 0 min 0 sec -1 frames normally for the rip's length to be correct.  However, since CDex doesn't support sample granularity for offset correction, you can set the Stop Position to 0 min 0 sec 0 frames to get some extra samples.  Click OK and it should rip fine.  Then you can correct the offset by trimming 6 samples from the beginning and 582 samples from the end in an audio editor.

I wonder if Andre or spoon would be willing to add an option for the number of sectors per read...

Hi guys, do you know if any new drive can overread into the lead out? My only drive that could do it is dead so now I'm trying to buy a new one.

Thanks in advance
