Look at a 'Black Wheel' turntable!

Back in 2017, a family business in the Netherlands launched a successful Kickstarter for a minimalist turntable that played the underside of a record via a linear tonearm. Now Miniot has launched a limited audiophile version called the Black Wheel.

Development of the Wheel turntable has taken quite a bit longer than expected, and the original offering has now been superseded by a second-generation build. Each unit is hand-built by a small team in the company's Schagen facility, and a significant number of backers report that they are yet to receive the novel disc spinner.

I don't mind someone handcrafting a designer product and setting a €2000 price tag, or €1800 extra for a limited edition premium version. (150 goes in to the more expensive stylus.) And they don't score outrageously high on the alchemyBS-o-meter either.

Interesting question pops [/crackles?] up: the role of gravity for surface dirt? When the stylus plows down into the inevitable dust, and it maybe falls down rather than being steamrolled down into to the bottom of the groove, maybe that isn't the worst?

Static generated from friction will have a FAR greater affect on dirt accumulation than gravity.

OT

$4000 sent me looking for a laser player, which my ignorance assumes must be the ultimate solution if done right. It exists in ELP, but not done right (dust is its achilles heel), and the audiophile price tag they were selling for oh dear. I think it would be possible to reduce the impact of dust by using multiple lasers of different wavelengths and angles, not that a new laser solution will ever actually exist.

Intuitively, laser seems like a good idea but in the real world it just doesn't seem to work very well.    Probably because records weren't designed to be played optically.   

A (decent quality) regular phono cartridge usually exceeds quality of the record itself.   Vinyl records are just not that good of a format.  ;)    Make the record digital and it works great!!!   And CD players are affordable.
