Title: Will there be support for mp3HD? (lossless MP3)
Post by: Helios61 on 2009-03-20 13:04:02
Hi community!

Will there be support for the new "[a href='index.php?showtopic=70548']mp3HD TECHNOLOGY[/a]" in one of the upcoming release of foobar2000?

Best regards

Helios

As far as I know any player that supports mp3 does support mp3HD, that's the main reason for mp3HD: to have a lossless codec which is supported by every player.

Edit: Whoops. You actually need a special decoder to play mp3HDs losslessly.

Jepp, lossy .mp3 works, but mp3-hd only with decoder!

Unless they decide to make one, or they decide to release the source for the lossless decoder, I'd guess, "no".

I don't think so and I really hope not. The tech doesn't look the least bit impressive, and FLAC is a much more accessible playback format with an incredible headstart.

I personally strongly disrecommend this format. Peter's word for it was "useless". I really don't think it will show up in foobar2000 any time soon, especially as a first-party component.

Since tagging these files in fb2k destroys correction part, 3rd party input plugin is just dangerous.

I hope they'll release foobar plugin for this codec, otherwise it's useless for me.

i really cant see it happening as the format is massively flawed from the start.

MP3 Pro format didn't become a success either. You know it was the version of MP3 with added Spatial Band Replication. Was used by some internet radio broadcaster until they discovered AAC and it's SBR cousin HE-AAC.

I'm just more interested in supporting a codec that is backed by the MPEG standards body.

There is a hybrid lossy/lossless codec from the MPEG standards body MPEG-4 SLS aka HD-AAC. It embeds the enhancement layer(s) as a second "trak" in the MP4 structure hopefully making it less brittle.
