FAAC v1.16 much improved to older versions

I think he actually means 42, not 48, which is a reference from the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series of books, etc, by Douglas Adams.

In case you have not read them, 42 is the answer to everything.

Regards,

Den

Please do continue development on the winamp output plugins.
Why does Winamp need libmmd.dll anyway? How do I get it and where do I put it so Winamp can run the plugins?

Edit: Sorry I found the required dll on the same website. Do I put it into the same directory as the plugins?

Because Roberto uses dynamic linking with the Intel CRT library - I advise using static linking, where everything needed will be put in exe/dll file.

Actually, I have tried to convert them to mp4 using the latest mp4ip tools and it just gives a bunch of errors.

What version number? I did this on Sunday with mp4creator v0.9.7 from Nov 2002 with a default MPEG-2 AAC LC file, and the MP4 file played well in foobar2000 and aacDECdrop. If you use the LTP or Main profile or the MPEG-4 flag with the new FAAC, the ADTS header will be different though, and maybe even a new mp4creator v0.9.8 from March can't transform them correctly yet.

And playing the aac in winamp doesn't work either, it will play but it isn't seekable.  Not a huge deal, I suppose I guess if I compile the latest in_faad plugin for winamp it should work.

Probably... did you use in_faad.dll or in_mp4.dll for this test? As you might know, the latter can't seek in AAC files on default.

It certainly is faster though than any of my compiles or the last one that was on rarewares.

You should try an old v1.10 from Aug 2002 if you still have it...

FAAC is not ready for a good sound at low bitrates, because it lacks some important tools like joint stereo and resampling yet. If the only developer knik finds the time, he will implement them.

The quality setting instead of bitrates is new in FAAC, because it didn't use constant bitrates anymore for some time now, although the -b switch still suggested it. That's why knik changed it, so it wouldn't confuse people. It also defined the average bitrate for one channel only which led to even more confusion.

The automatic lowering of the cutoff frequencies is of course a necessary thing (PsyTEL does this on default, too), and probably it's not tuned very well in FAAC yet. Nevertheless to use a higher cutoff at low bitrates everything else must be OK first, otherwise it will introduce way too many related artifacts. For example it has to match the resampling frequency (see above).

yes, they are useful, but not the only answer to everything, because that's already "48".

What does it mean ?

Hi franc, it's just a joke...

To be franc, I find the quality really bad, under LAME one at the same bitrate...

Then you should compare it to v1.10 from Aug 2002...  If you've read the thread at Audiocoding.com, you know that this should not be regarded as the end of the development, but rather a new start. A problem could be that knik is the only developer at the moment, and he doesn't have too much time for FAAC.

No, just put it in your \windows\system\ directory...

Those mpeg4ip tools don't work with the new ADTS format yet.
I'll make some patches today.

It was 0.9.8, yes I did use the MPEG-4 flag and it was LC.  I understand there really isn't any difference between using MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 though.

I used in_faad from rarewares.  I played the file in winamp 2.9, didn't try in foobar.

Right, it's only the flag now (before the header revision it was also two additional bits for the emphasis field). That's why mp4creator should also be aware of this revision, and it appears it's not yet. So you should also keep an old mp4creator version just to make sure you have all possibilities with old and new AAC files.

Foobar won't play AAC files, only MP4. But it has the big advantage of being able to tag these files with a convenient mass-tagger and also use ReplayGain because of that.

Thanks hans.
I initially placed libmmd.dll in C:\Program Files\Winamp\plugins but it didn't work. I then tried C:\Windows and it worked. Would there be any difference in placing it in the Windows or the Windows\System directory?

Not in functionality, but the \systems subdirectory is the usual place where almost all external and internal DLLs are stored. But Windows will find it in its own directory, too, because both are mentioned in the PATH environment variable.
