La 0.4b released

See the website here.

Aside from some very small bug fixes, the main point of this release is that the core codec is now contained in a .dll, which can be used using the included API. The source code to the plugins and command-line program is also included to serve as examples for using the codec, and also in the hope that some help can be obtained in maintaining the plugins and in creating new ones.

In particular, the foobar2000 plugin, which is updated to run with foobar 0.7x in this version, is already looking out of date with the 0.8x beta already out. If any foobar experts wish to look at this plugin, laugh at the code and then fix/update/maintain it, please feel free to do so.

I as the developer of La would prefer to devote any time I have to working on the compression engine rather than maintaining plugins, hence the new API. As with all minor version changes, this version features no change to the compression engine, i.e. it is forwards and backwards compatible with other 0.4x versions.

Yes, nice indeed...to my knowledge, this one offers the best compression of the bunch.

Best, of course, but the slowest.

I've just given it a try, and it seems to yield good compression ratios. However, I have found that during playback of .la files with foobar2000, the movement of the mouse is stuttery, as are a lot of Windows animations.
I thought this was slightly strange, since I can encode video which uses all available proccessing time without noticeable slow down. I've just installed WinAmp and tried playing .la files using that instead, and there is no slow down at all.
Has anyone else noticed this?

RobAJ: I think the reason lies in this qoute from mcbevin...

I did try it with both 0.7 and the 0.8 betas, but whatever the case, I'll look forward to a better plugin so I can convert my music to .la and get a bit more space!

I'm using it as archiving tool, endoce to La done once, so I don't care about some minor delay there, and I never listen to it (aside to preview) when I want to listen aac and mp3 are my frieds.

all I want a compressor to do is compress as high as possible so I can store as much as possible on as little as possible space.

You're wrong. Optimfrog IS the slowest one.

@RobAJ: Foobar2000/Preferences/Playback/Playback thread priority - lower it a bit.

that would make the music stuttery when opening menus or starting applications
not a good idea

I said "a bit", not all the way left. If music stutters just increase output buffer lenght.
