"This is a legacy preferences pages..."

What shall I do? Re-install the component?

edit: the preferences are full of these pages. I'm confused.

"This is a legacy preferences pages..."

What shall I do? Re-install the component?

edit: the preferences are full of these pages. I'm confused.
This means that all the 3rd party components exposing this message in the preferences need to be recompiled with the new SDK, which has been released simultaneously with the 1.0 final.

foobar2000 has come so far since I started using it in 2002 or so. It's an oasis of sanity in the desert of madness that is media players. We used to jokingly call it The Noisy Notepad back then. These are some screenshots I made in 2003 or 2004. See if you can tell which one in foobar2000.

Glad i waited untill i was able to properly (and easily...) configure my default user interface

Thanks a lot Peter, and everyone else involved in the development of this wonderful software

Now that 1.0 is out, next on the tasklist is to find a way for us to donate to support future development

Yes, Peter, thanks a lot. And not just him, but thanks to all the cooperating devs of fb2k AND the components.

But whenever I hit a milestone, I want to see the next one. However, in this case, I don't see it. Actually, if fb2k just happens to be so perfect (which I think it is), is there anything that comes to your mind an AUDIO player should do? I am out of the ideas. Is THIS the end of foobar2000?

I am curios to know if from now every major release will inrease the first digit of version number. The final is called 1.0 and not 1.0.0: Does that mean anything at all?

Does this mean that developers could write full featured components like CUI components??

Yes.
I would to say please to the component developers outside to repect the spirit of the DefaultUi: So please don't add preferences for custom colors but respect the global ones, if you create a selection viewer take the global setting, keep components simple and clean, ...

My components use the global colors by default and provides the ability to override a global color individually per instance. My experience is that it's very hard to get a pleasing and consistent look for all the different permutations of global colors. It's almost essential to provide the ability to override some in order to get a pleasing look.
To quote the movie Clerks: "The best of two worlds."

I see one change in v1.0 is "Separated ID3v2 padding on/off from ID3v2 compatibility mode switch."
I see indeed, that an extra switch appears in the advanced preferences. As I always use the compatibility mode switch to enable correct tagging for my Nokia N95, I'm wondering if padding was enabled or disabled before. I guess it was enabled if the compatibility switch was off, and it was disabled if the compatibility switch was on?

Will I lose my settings and my foobar layout if I update?

Well, I lost mine. I'm using 0.9.6.9 portable install, and it looks like the portable settings have moved from foobar2000.cfg to a lot of single files (one for each plugin) in the new "configuration" folder.

Please, what was the need for such a big change, which is not even very clearly documented, and why not make it backwards compatible?
I'll be continuing happily with 0.9.6.9 until someone writes a plug-in that converts my old settings to the new cfg thingy.

For the rest - great player

Exactly, it did (and still does) multiple things to improve compatibility.

Well, I lost mine. I'm using 0.9.6.9 portable install, and it looks like the portable settings have moved from foobar2000.cfg to a lot of single files (one for each plugin) in the new "configuration" folder.
Not only portable settings. However the foobar2000.cfg contents are loaded fine when you first run the application, then saved to the "configuration" folder automatically the next time configuration is written.
Please, what was the need for such a big change, which is not even very clearly documented, and why not make it backwards compatible?
The reason for the change was that [a href='index.php?showtopic=76353']people wanted[/a] more powerful way to manage component configuration, like delete old entries or transfer only settings for some components without the need to bring the whole foobar2000.cfg over. Also it seems you didn't read the v1.0 Release Notes (http://www.foobar2000.org/releasenotes/10#new_configuration_file_format).
I'll be continuing happily with 0.9.6.9 until someone writes a plug-in that converts my old settings to the new cfg thingy.
Irrelevant, the new version does it itself transparently.

You're right. Worked fine once I deleted the "configuration" folder and re-copied the foobar2000.cfg before starting up. Looks like I made the mistake to start the freshly-installed fb2k too soon (that is, before copying all my components and settings and stuff to the new folder).
Please, what was the need for such a big change, which is not even very clearly documented, and why not make it backwards compatible?

Hello everybody.

Sorry to interrupt the joyful reunion, but I think I am experiencing a pretty bug.
I'm running a Windows 7 Ultimate, and I'm forced to "set as Administrator" if I want to see the program works.
If I try to open foobar without these precautions, it says "Unrecoverable playback error" when I press play.
If someoone have a more convenient solution, I would be glad to hear.

Greetings from France.

Maybe you want to play audio tracks you have no access rights to with that restricted user account.

Look into foobar's console (main menu View -> console) for more detailed information.

Then best would be to open a new thread which contains a list of your components, the content of foobar's console (which is more detailed than the error popup) and what kind of files (file type) can't be played.

I find it real hard to explain what this software means to me. Let me tell like this: A life without music is inconceivable for me, from which it follows, a life without Foobar2000 is impossible for me. I have seen awesome applications, - MPlayer for instance - but this is different. I have tried almost all the music players out there including, media monkey, gmusic browser, mpd with a thousand clients, xmms2, Helium Music Manager - Well I have lost count. But this is where I come back to.

Thanks to Peter and all other people involved in developing and maintaining this software.

I must admit that my sentence is misleading: Of course it is reasonable and doesn't touch the spirit of Dui to add custom colors like foo_textdisplay and some visualizations do. As i wrote that i was thinking of a scenario like in Columns Ui where on one side this Ui offers opportunity of global color settings and on other side just very few panels use that.

Furthermore i used that as example just to express my hope that new UiElements will be simple and clean.

It's about equally simple to use and get notified of changes in the global colors in DUI and CUI code.
In Default UI, you implement a notify() function that your parent calls to tell you about changes.
In Columns UI, you implement a callback and register it with CUI.

As you say, it's mostly in the minds of the element/panel developers, who may not know nor care about how to leverage the existing color infrastructure.

What's your problem? Here, on Ubuntu Karmic with the latest PulseAudio and Alsa (from a Launchpad a PPA) and wine 1.1.36, it works almost perfectly. I have two issues: foobar crashes if I do 'Open containing folder' (known bug) and foobar cannot find audio cd's.

I don't think this is the correct topic to discuss that, but I take your advice and update PA and ALSA. The issue is foobar gives unpredictable results: at one time it plays fine, at others it just plays at 1/10 speed, which is awful. Could not track down the reason, so updating PA, ALSA, WINE is my best bet (using Karmic too).

Another round of thanks to Peter! There are a couple points where I wish foobar2000 were different (notably playing nicely with nonstandard tags used by iTunes or WMP, just for the sake of compatibility of foobar-encoded or -edited files with other libraries or dominant programs) but I understand the reasons for doing things the way that Peter does, and foobar2000 is far and away better than anything else I've seen - I use it all the time. Thanks so much. If you were in Chapel Hill, I'd buy you some beers.

i'm back using DUI again and i see the playlist in v1 now supports a gradient rectangle for selected items when using aero. but are there plans for other UI elements to use the same scheme? i'd actually rather the playlist didn't have aero until it's supported across all elements then at least it would look consistent. it looks a bit untidy as it is.

(and yes i realise i'm being petty - i know it's not the most important thing in the world. )

Post by: Hitchhiker427 on 2010-01-15 01:08:20
I'm not sure if it's possible to use it in other components, but if you want to go back to the old style for the sake of consistency, you can do so by changing the "selection" color in the preferences.

On the topic of the selection rectangle, I have a little minor glitch.  The selection rectangle for the currently selected track (when active) draws the blue gradient aero-style rectangle AND a black wireframe rectangle around that.  Is this normal?

Yes. That's how you know which track/item is focused and not merely selected.

Post by: fatcerberus1 on 2010-01-15 02:26:13
Hitchhiker's right, if you look at how Explorer does it, the highlight rectangle is a darker color if it's focused, otherwise it's lighter.  Never do you see a black outline around the current selection like in fb2k.
Title: foobar2000 v1.0: discussion
Post by: shakey_snake on 2010-01-15 03:05:40
The fb2k's various focus rectangles don't appear to be "aero-styled", no (neither is the album list), but there certainly still is a focus rectangle in explorer.

e.g. Highlight a single item in explorer then ctrl+click that item.
Title: foobar2000 v1.0: discussion
Post by: fatcerberus1 on 2010-01-15 03:19:19
Okay, yeah, I see what you mean now.  Explorer's focus outline isn't quite as dark as fb2k's though (it's bluish like the rest of the rectangle, where in fb2k even in the Aero-styled playlist view it's either black or a really dark gray).  Not sure why, though, I assume foobar is using built-in Windows functions to render the listview?
Title: foobar2000 v1.0: discussion
Post by: Hitchhiker427 on 2010-01-15 04:22:16
Oh, I see now.  Still, in explorer it doesn't appear to draw a second rectangle around the selected item like it does in foobar.  It's not a big deal or anything, just a bit ugly.

I'd also like to see row highlighting in the playlist when the mouse hovers over items like it does in explorer and WMP.

I'd also love to see the currently playing track highlighted a different colour.

At the moment all we get to see what track is playing is that insignificant little greater than arrow.

The fact that the last track you highlighted stays highlighted while another track is playing is to be quite off putting.

I know it is on Foobars To Do List. But It would seem to be relatively easy to program (seeing as how they already have the little arrow moving down).

Again, A big thanks to Peter and everyone who contributed to this historical version of foobar which was already perfect in my opinion ! This player really changed my life  .

Well actually I still got something very embarassing  , I know I should have tested the beta, but unfortunatly I didn't have internet, I was on holiday... So here's the problem :

Quote
Portable installs now remember Media Library paths relatively to the install folder.

If I understand well, I get my external hard drive, on one computer the letter is H:\ the playlist works, on the other one it is F:\ it should works considering this quote but it doesn't, do I have to put the music in a special directory ? I tried recopying the music and remaking the playlists in foobar's directory, it did not work, can somebody help me or point me a component for this ? (I heard about something called foo_revive or so but I didn't find it...)  What I do now is making special folders to be able to recreate playlists in a couple of minutes.

Thank you very much,

Thib

This was something I complained about recently, too.  Media Library is relative, but .fpl playlists or not.  foo_playlist_revive is your only option for now.

Also main menu > Playback > Cursor follows playback, anyone?

Brilliant !
Thanks a million for that - I have been wanting my highlight bar to follow the song being played for years and maybe it was there just above my nose !

Thanks

And yes thanks again Peter for Foobar (just so glad we finally got to ver 1.00)
Microsoft usually need to get to version 3.00 before they got a useable product !

Kind Regards

I'm missing the actions Properties (metadata tab) and (properties tab) or are they still there?

I've noticed this too. In previous versions of foobar, I had separate keyboard shortcuts for Properties (metadata tab)" and "Properties (properties tab)" which was pretty convenient for me. Those shortcuts were the only two that didn't transfer, and now the only option I can find is "Properites" which goes to the metadata tab by default.
It's not a big deal, but I'm curious as to whether this was nixed for a reason (vs. just working out that way).

I noticed this during the beta stage and have requested to bring the action "Properties (properties tab)" back. The silence was deafening .
My guess is that the goal was to have only one Properties thing. But it could have been called any name really and in any of the context menu categories (or not in any at all) for the purpose of having a keyboard shortcut.

I really hate what happened to the context menus, and I think that's awful and backwards but otherwise it seems nice so far!

i think the same. what is the reason for this?

hi, i have a problem with the artreader of 1.0
If i my artist name is "*shels" and i use %artist% in the path it wont find anything. '*' is forbidden in a file path so those special  characters should be removed from search path by the artreader.

Album art uses the same replacement rules as the file operations component, where * is replaced by x.

Your image should be loaded after renaming it to xshels.jpg.

Very good to know. Where can i find those replacement rules?

EDIT: found them, but using the funtion $ansi or $ascii doesnt work. i want to clear that string "D:/Martin/My Documents/My Music/LastFmData/*shels.lastfm" but it doesnt

Is there any way to recreate the old "View Now Playing" behavior? Currently, when that command is executed, a popup balloon appears over the foobar icon and displays the current playing track. The old behavior actually changed the focus of the selection to the track that was currently playing.

This was very useful when a lot of playlists were open and you wanted to quickly go to the one that was playing.

That behaviour depends on the notification area icon settings.

Oh, woops. I had no idea that had anything to do with it.

I think what you are looking for is ACTIVATE NOW PLAYING which is no longer in 1.0 it seems. I don't know why. I also used it a lot

That has nothing to do with the core, though. If you don't see "Activate Now Playing" anymore, you forgot to (re)install Columns UI.

Tell me please, why at equalizer activation there is an effect of normalisation of loudness?
I use version 1.0. Thanks

Yes there is. I was just going to post about this, glad someone else noticed it.

Something was done to the peaks processing or something
I have completely disabled ReplayGain, and still get random frequent loudness changes when the EQ is on (no other DSPs active).
This is the sole reason i am considering switching back to the 0.9 series.
I can attach my equalizer preset if anyone needs it.

EQ volume pump effect seems to be side effect of using float output on Vista/7 with DirectSound. Windows mixer seems to lower volume for samples that would clip. If you try WASAPI output you should get expected output.

WASAPI output

What is the WASAPI output? The primary sound driver?

There's a bug with the notification area icon in foobar2000 1.0: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index....showtopic=78027 (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=78027)

Yes, that report has been read and the bug fixed.
No need to bump this poor thread with it.
Let's move back to the usual routine - start a new topic for each question or comment instead of piling up everything in one thread with generic title.
