android OS media/audio player apps?

any media player/audio player apps that stand out on android? see there's a large selection to choose from, real player, winamp, rockplayer, etc - in addition to built in functionality. got myself an epic4g and the stock player is bland and unfunctional, doesn't properly support FLAC tags, etc. Looking into finding a power user app / something geared toward quality. What's everyone into?

useful features would be proper FLAC tag support, support for FLAC, possibly WMA/WMA LOSSLESS, playlist creator/editor, some basic libray management & advanced display/tag search options, maybe even tag editor and the like. anything that has advanced options for the management of audio quality is also sought, especially something that allows audio to be played back with the least manipulation with emphesis on quality/accurate reproduction. (not necessarily quality as in sound and EQ enhancements, but tweaking might be useful to get things sounding right) I've heard some skipping with the stock player as well, must be something that works better than this.

I doubt you're going to find many players that do WMA Lossless on Android.  Theres no free decoder, so you'd have to buy the MS one.  Probably not many people interested in doing that, if MS would even allow it.

I thought about that, but Epic 4G and newer Android devices are shipping with WMA support and some of the third-party apps are able to use the support that's included on newer devices. Not sure but WMA Lossless might even be working, haven't tried in the default player yet.

Just because something supports WMA doesn't mean it supports Lossless.  Everything supports WMA, very little supports WMA Lossless.  Its worth checking, but you're probably going to be converting those files to FLAC.

AFAIK WMA (lossy) support is included in stock Android, my Droid1 played such files right out of the box. I think it's safe to say all Android handsets can play WMA.

That said, the closest thing I've seen to what the OP is requesting is Winamp for Android (free) and PowerAMP (more features, paid).

Seems they (FFmpeg) are working on WMA Lossless: http://wiki.multimedia.cx/index.php?title=...10#WMA_lossless[/font]

Thats a list of possible project ideas for a past google summer of code, and if you look closely you'll see that the WMA Lossless one was not selected due to lack of interest.  As far as I know if anyone is working on WMA Lossless for ffmpeg, they haven't said so publicly.

Necrobump. I wanted to plug that I've tried most of the music players for android including the pretty awesome one coming soon from Motorola and only one had decent quality, features, and format support; poweramp. The only thing its really lacking is better online album art retrieval.

It definitely has the best sound quality I've heard off of android (android OS default has horrible sound quality IMO off of my Droid X, even lo-fi pandora does a better job it seems off of its app). Gapless, FLAC, Ape, m4a all supported. It also supports scrobbling, EQ, and headphone controls for those with built-in buttons for controlling the player. The biggest negative is that it only has a 15 day free trial before it wants you to pay $4.99 for the app. Give it a try, I really wish a free option would come along.

Yes, yes. And of course there's no ABX for the platform, so "I don't gotta do a test."

Let's just agree the app has a lot of feature and leave subjective/unproven sound quality assessment out of this, m'kay?

Dang it, too late to edit my above post. I Didn't want to be a thread killer or a cynic  I'm actually looking at a Droid-based phone to replace my current mobile clutter of phone & music player.

WinAmp for Droid? sounds good already if they can keep up the plug-in philosophy like the Windows player.

Apologies for interrupting (and double-posting),

Like everything else, the Android player can be tested via the indirect usage of RMAA. Create a test file on a supported platform (e.g. any PC), play the test file on the unsupported platfor,  record it on any platform that records to a file, and analyze the recordef ile on a supported platform.

I've done this for the Clip+ with good results.
