Title: foobar2000 for mac
Post by: Peter on 2017-12-29 14:10:28
yup...

>>>>> CLICK (https://www.foobar2000.org/mac) <<<<<

While it's not being actively developed and has only limited features, I'm releasing it in hope that some will find it useful.

It is built from the same codebase as current foobar2000 mobile beta, hence the versioning: 2.x to distinguish itself from classic Windows foobar2000, x.1.6 for mobile codebase of 1.1.6.

I'm listing El Capitan as the required system version because the playlist tabs are known to render incorrectly on older and I don't currently have time to figure out why. The rest of the app may or may not work on as old as Mavericks, if you use such you're welcome to try and report.

Hello, everybody. Have a nice day for everybody.
I've used Foobar2000 on Windows platform but I used it more like a converter and joined the files together in one file.
I'd like to know is there any chance to get converter functions and other functions for foobar2000 on Mac?
Thank you

Awesome! These days I use (the abandoned) Cog player on macOS. An EQ and a time slider would take me back to good old foobar again!

While it does not have an equalizer, it does have a time slider, and I have been maintaining the player for several years now, here (https://kode54.net/cog/).

Thank you so much Peter, working flawlessly on macos 10.13.3
You might have just saved me from switching back to Windows solely for Foobar!

Would love to see other features such as the real-time spectrogram (yes, that's the feature I miss most on my mac  :D ) implemented as time goes by.

Cheers

Hello - many thanks for this.  I have been longing for Mac version of Foobar for almost 10 years now (I still maintain my audio PC on Windows from 2003 mostly for Foobar2000).  Three questions :
1) I am curious on how to use the Foobar add-on components: should they be in the same directory (applications) or be in a separate subdirectory? (or am I missing something)
2) Would it be possible to have a step-by-step guide in a short document (I have downloaded and placed the app in Applications folder, but I'm not sure if there are other things to do at this point)
3) Foobar2000 for Mac (FooMac? :-) works fine -- MANY THANKS -- on my MacBook Air, with my local music, it works like a dream.  However, I wonder if I could use it on my network and access my server (or any other device on my network)

With non-portable foobar2000 you just double-click the downloaded component file if it has the .fb2k-component extension. For portable foobar2000 and for very old components that still use the .zip extension you drag and drop the file over Components screen of Preferences.

My mistake. I somehow assumed he registered to comment on the news and took the opportunity to ask about good old Windows version at the same time. I realize now that the talk about applications directory should have made it clear that it's all Mac-talk.

Let me clarify then that there are no components for the limited and very early Mac version. All existing components are for the Windows version and require Windows operating system for their operation. No other foobar2000 version (mobile, Mac alpha) has SDK for component development.

Hey Peter, just registered to say thank you for this. It's very nice, polished and the way I expect a Mac app. For myself it lacks only for one feature I miss so badly. In the Playback menu there should be the shuffle option, so I can play a playlist randomly without pressing the random button all the time.

Can you please implement this feature?

Many Thanks! At last we have a port on mac!

There is needed much time until we have a full version comparable to windows. Let me mention which two points i consider important for further development:

1. Try to use the modern ui of mac os apps (see apple own tools: pages, numbers, keynote; does anybody can say to me what has to be done to let apps look like that? Cocoa? I am not that techy!)

2. Don't try to mimic or copy foobar2000s ui and functionality on windows but make an app which is fully compatible to mac standards and mac users expectations.

Once again: Thanks!
(I was so quiet here since 3 years because i changed to mac)

Hi, Peter!
Thanks for your efforts on making foobar2000 available on MacOS.
Unfortunately, i have a problem. When i try to put my library on foobar, it crashes.
Being more descriptive:
Start foobar ->files->add folder->select folder->click to add=crash.
What can i do?

If foobar2000 for mac is crashing for you, please get me all the information gathered by Apple crash reporter:
In "foobar2000 quit unexpectedly" window, click "Report..."
A window with full crash log will appear - select all the text and post it here.

New version up, 2.1.10. Many bugs have been fixed. Still waiting for crash telemetry info. I encourage everyone to add their entire music library to playlist and see what happens - and send me the full log if it crashes.

Thanks for the effort! Always great to see something new about foobar.

> “foobar2000.app” can’t be opened because it is from an unidentified developer.

I understand that spending money on Apple's certificate may be too bad, but then perhaps you could use a GPG key to sign the binaries, so that people who care could easily verify that it's legit. HTTPS is good, but HTTPS alone is not 100% bulletproof (people need to manually check if the certificate didn't change to some other issued by a Chinese CA or something). And since foobar2000 is quite popular, I am sure it will be targeted by internet hooligans.

Tried to drag&drop about 145 gigabytes of music (which is mostly FLAC, and some WavPack and TAK), took about 3 minutes of "Indexing Media". A bit strange, as it's all on a fast SSD connected via Thunderbolt, and CPU usage was very low during the indexing.

Then I started playback, created new playlist, deleted the original playlist (ending up with 1 empty playlist) and clicked "next track" a few times. It seems like it still uses the removed playlist — subsequent tracks from the deleted playlist are playing. Is it as intended?

Hello Peter!  I'm most impressed with your ability to get foobar on a mac.  I've kept my Windows install around so that I could use the replay gain function for files on my phone.  I might not have to do that anymore. :)

I'm playing around with install version 2.1.10 and I cannot access preferences at all. Its totally greyed out.  I'm not sure if this is intentional, but I felt it would be good to share.  I'm on an imac running High Sierra 10.13.4

Hi Peter, Thanks so much!
Since I moved to Mac some years ago Foobar was the piece of software I missed more than anything else!
Despite his presently essential look I'm so happy to click his icon again.
My small suggestion would be the possibility to choose the audio interface.
A dark theme I'm sure would be really appreciate.
Thanks again for your effort on the porting!

Hi! thank you so much, I've been waiting for this moment for over 3 years since I left windows behind.

I obviously understand this is just a raw version, but things I miss the most are:

1. support of previous/play-pause/next (F7/F8/F9 on the keyboard) buttons. mine still tries to launch iTunes when trying to use them.
2. last fm scrobble support (doesn't even recognise the player)
3. the bar with the whole library on the left hand side with a search bar.

any chance for any of those to be done?

thanks so much
Pav

Doesn't support plugins (yet?), and even if it did, everything would have to be specially ported to macOS.

Does macos support something similar to Wine for Linux? That would be lot easier, despite not being native.

Wine runs on macOS too. (The wine itself, not something similar to wine; and it is easy to install via homebrew).
I use foobar2000 on it, and it is mostly okay. Still a lot better than all the other players available.

Hi,

Thank you very much for making foobar2000 available for macOS.
I've tried this app a bit. While understanding its limited functions, some of these issues I think are essential to point out:
1. Quit and reopen the app and all the changes (which fields to display) are reset. These changes need to be maintained.
2. No shortcut key to (Play/Pause...). No options for shuffle and loop the whole playlist.
3. No capability to change artwork of a song. This is the only missing thing to make it a true tag-editor, which popular apps like VOX are lacking of.
4. No information about current song, have to scroll down the whole playlist to see which one is checked in "Playing".

I think the above points are essential, why other functions can be improved later.
I hope that you will update to make it a standard macOS music player app.
I'd really appreciate your hard work. Thank you very much.

Hello; re to Peter / Foobar2000 for Mac developers;

I registered to be able to post here and comment on Foobar2000 for Mac. Will give a few comments and suggestions.

When I came to the point I could switch to Mac due to financial constrains, I was shocked and annoyed to learn that there is no Foobar2000 for Mac. Additionally, most audio players are complete junk full of "features", actually preventing people from listening to music, same like on Windows machines. It turned out the only alternative is VLC; which is not that pleasant to use as an audio player. It is bulky and has weird usage logic. Than I found you published Foobar for Mac! :) Kudos! I use Foobar for mac essentially from the beginning for music play purposes. There are some issues with it however. If fixed, Foobar might as well become player of preference for Mac for millions of users.

1. Cmd+Backspace doesn't delete stuff from playlist; same for Fn+Backspace (del), only mouse right-click works - this is annoying
2. Foobar2000 **really** needs in program volume bar. Without it it is not possible to fine-tune volume levels
3. It would be fantastic if Foobar2000 would be integrated with Mac audio controls

You do this, and it would be bye bye all other players for tech savvy users.

Thank for making this software. Foobar is brilliant in its simplicity and effectiveness.

I've lurked these forums far too long, so this'll be my inaugural post. I love and have been using foobar for ages.

@Peter so, I was able to isolate one bug.. upon initially pointing foobar 2.1.13(1) to my master folder (includes flacs, mp3s, imgs, zips, 7z, wavs, logs, cues, etc.), it faults upon trying to handle ZIP archives. to make sure, I confined away all zips from said folder, and foobar was happy to file away the rest of the folder's contents.

I'm a developer, bit of a hacker myself, so I knew to use Xcode/Instruments in this instance. hope this helps some :) sorry for not submitting a formal report. please understand: reasons ;)

I do my computing exclusively on Macs and while I use iTunes to archive my music (in ALAC), I still use foobar2000 through wine for some of its plug-ins (eg ABX, ReplayGain, Waveform Seekbar to monitor loudness, etc)

I remembered having Wine Bottler.app (GUI wrapper for wine?) already installed on my machine, and with it the installation was pretty easy.

I don’t use Windows’ fb2k through wine on macOS to play music simply just because I have been too used to iTunes, and my many Apple devices can be used as remote controllers for iTunes seamlessly.

I do my playback with iTunes, conversion is handled by either XLD or FFmpeg, and most tagging is done on fb2k.

New version up: 2.1.18

New UI design
Work-in-progress. Preferences are currently in the main window. If this concept turns out to be annoying much, they will be moved to a separate window.

Old Mac OS support
foobar2000 now officially runs on everything from OSX Mavericks up.
Note that I do not intend to support Mavericks indefinitely, but an old version of foobar2000 will be kept available for those who stick with old Mac OS.

I‘m sorry, but there's a small question I need to ask.

I have installed the latest version of Foobar2000 for Mac, but it can't open a tak file, and I can't find any instruction for installing additional components on Mac. Is this version has no option to install components or just because I missed anything I should read before using it?

Apparently TAK format is missing from the manifest so Finder does not recognize foobar2000 as a TAK file format handler. It will be fixed in the next update.
Drag and drop to a playlist works.

Nice!  Meeko approved!  The playlist setup is much better as it would get crowded if you had multiple playlists.  There's only a couple of things that keep this from being a daily driver for me instead of Jriver:

1 - any chance we will see album art?  Clicking properties shows <cover front> indicating it knows art is there, but it doesn't display it.

2 - cannot (shuffle tracks) like in the Windows version to have a truly random order of songs in a playlist; actually I cannot get anything to shuffle at all; hitting random in playback only jumps to a new song and then continues in order

3 - any chance for a darker theme?  Not a fan of bright white.

Thanks Peter for continuing to work on the mac version! :)

Different dialog themes only make sense if it's using custom dialog controls and color schemes. Maybe try it on Mojave with the Dark Mode? At least my Cog player is currently built to react to switching to Dark Mode.

I'm having a possible playback issue in 2.1.18, and wanted to test 2.1.14 to see if the issue existed in that version. Is there anywhere to grab the older DMG files? post in question (https://hydrogenaud.io/index.php/topic,116442.new.html#info_960932)

Scratch that, found the .dmg in a download folder. That said, it would be nice to grab older versions just in case there are issues with a new release.

Peter, many, many thanks for bringing foobar to the Mac. I really like that it's minimalistic right now. It's instantly become my player of choice.

I don't feel the need to import a whole library of music nor do I need extensive playlists, I mostly play stuff one album at a time so it's perfect for me right now. One thing I'm missing though: a progress bar/time display (and maybe some keyboard shortcuts but I can live without them). I hope you will be able to find the time to keep supporting this.

Thanks again and keep up the good work!

This is amazing. I was just pondering going back to playing regular files instead of streaming from spotify (as the app is just bloated and awful) and surprise surprise - there is a version of foobar2000 for mac! <3

* What are the plans for this version? Could we expect support for plugins? Could we expect support for media library (one of the best things in foobar2k for windows - making organising and selecting things to listen a breaze)

Thank you very much for Foobar2000 for Mac.
It works very well for me.

Just one question : does it support 24ibit playback ?
When I play 96kHz 24bit Flac it shows in console "CoreAudio: opening 16bit 96000Hz 2ch".
Does it mean it pays it as 16 bit ?

even when it does, properly dithered&noise-shaped conversion to 16 bits is transparent so you probably won't be able to tell the difference either way.

Just reporting a really bad bug that will make the mac version crash every time.

I use vorbis files in my car every now and then, and like to replay-gain the files so that the volume is equal.  Right clicking and having the replay gain scanner in foobar for mac run "scan per track gain" on the files causes it to crash.  Every time.  The only way to make it work is to do it one by one, and even then it will crash after two files.  And then you have to load the program again.  Sometimes it will crash after working on one file, sometimes after two.

I tested mp3 files and m4a files as well because I commonly will use them in my iphone, and the converter doesn't crash with them.  Any ideas what might be up?  On a mac, I know I use MediaHuman converter to make the vorbis files if that matters.

Thanks.

As others have stated, this is wonderful, but would be nice to have a functional Shuffle option, and to know whether bitperfect output is possible with files greater than 16-bit. Thanks very much!

Thank you for foobar2000 for mac.  I have been really enjoying using it.
One issue I need help is that I stream FLACs from a NAS and I've noticed some issues over wifi.

Can you please add configuration for buffering size/time?  Thanks,
(BTW, do you need help in development? Is there a public github repo?)

Just installed the new version. Works fine, but the omission of volume control and progress bar will stop users from switching to this app fully. I for one still have to use the (ugly) VLC for music playing due to this omission.

Thank you Peter for your effort of even bringing foobar2000 to Mac OS. I've been hoping for this since I switched to Mac OS X in 2016. I've used foobar2000 excessively (for music file conversion and cataloguing) first on Windows until 2006 then on Linux with wine (unhappy) and now on mac os with wineskin (not too happy neither). So I'm another foobar2000 junkie that is overjoyed for every new feature coming to fb2kmos ;)

Thank you so much for your effort to bring Foobar2000 to mac!! I have been waiting years for a good player to come to mac.  The best I have found is Swinsian which is great in many ways; simple to use, easy to find your music, and doesn't make a mess of your library. But there are just a few things I really miss from Foobar; persistent playlist (I hate how Swinsian deletes tracks from your current playlist as they finish.) and extremely customization friendly interface, and of course the price tag.

I hope you find the time to continue developing this!

Hi.  Completely new to foobar2000 for mac.  I've been looking for an alternative to iTunes for syncing music and playlists to my iPod classic 160.  I've installed foobar2000 Mac on my MBP, and I've imported my entire iTunes music library into a FB playlist.  Is there some way to sync this to my iPod Classic?

Many thanks for this Foobar2000 version for Mac!
I have also waited for a long time for Foobar to come to Mac.

It's already great, but please continue to improve it!
While we don't need the level of customisation of the Windows version, a few more features would be very useful:
- enable custom fields as columns of the list view (key feature for Classical music, where Composer is a key tag for example). The custom fields are already well integrated in the properties dialog. Adding them to the column chooser should hopefully be not too complicated
- select scaling of UI (when using a high resolution display)
- "Browse" UI from the IOS version (could be very nice if can be ported easily, each level of browsing may be displayed in a new column, similar to how the Finder displays folder levels)
- "Now playing" panel from iOS (could be displayed at the bottom of the left panel of the window)

foobar on mac has been a dream of fine since forever. I currently run it on wine but this is honestly not that far away from replacing it. Thanks a LOT for developing it. My biggest request would be album art displayed next to the tracks, but really I think we have a consensus here, I agree with every other petition on this page - now playing / seekbar panel, shuffle, custom fields, and keyboard shortcuts would each dramatically improve the player and place it among the top for the OS. Again thanks a lot of keeping the dream alive.

Thanks for the new version!

I definetely like the decision to put playback controls and title Information inside a bottom bar. That is what mac users expect and not the socalled customizability that Windows user like. The development of a mac Version offers the opportunity to go another way. Would be nice to see all playback related stuff being placed in bottom bar: album art of playing track, playback related commands and so on.

Just wanted to thank Peter for version 2.1.27

I know this is only being done in your spare time, but its finally starting to come together!  I'm so happy that random play finally works as it should!  *puts quod libet on the back burner and brings foobar forward*  Only thing I want to see is to find a way to call album art....worked hard to get all that set up.  Foobar can see that there's art in the folder or in the file, but won't display it.

Some requests for meaningful features for the new bottom bar:

1. double click on bottom bar shows playing track in playlist (similar behaviour like status bar in windows version of fb2k)
2. right click opens context menu for playing track
3. small album art left to the track information.
4. some kind of volume control (in windows i liked the volumebar-pop-up)
5. icons for "random" and "stop"
6. If the queue functionality will be implemented: use a popup-window like in itunes to show queued tracks

Volume control would be good. That's about the only thing I'm missing to be honest.

-starting playback with enter (instead of double click)
-enqueue as default action when i double click music file in finder
-restore column setup on next program launch, custom columns (i need genre)
-fadeout on stop/pause
-customizing output device

also, it would be good if windows version saved m3u8 files with forward slashes (/) inside

Major update out. I'm glad so many of you people find it useful. New features will be added on regular basis. Playlist search and cover art viewing will be definitely added at some point.

Version 2.1.35 adds volume control, output device switching and UPnP MediaRenderer streaming capability based on foo_out_upnp from Windows version.

The UPnP renderer feature works the same way as in Windows version.
UPnP renderers found on your network are listed among output devices.

Not to be confused with UPnP media server browsing, which is currently not supported but will probably be added at some point.

It is still quite strange for me to have the preferences settings in the playlist switcher. Couldn't they be added to the playback control pane because they are playback related.

In macUI you have those icons with popup-windows that have an arrow pointing to the icons and that hold even complex ui (even tabs and search fields) inside of it. I don't know the name of these ui-element: See the screenshot of numbers app as example.

Hi

Great to see Foobar on Mac.

The current interface takes some getting used to though.

How do you add to the media library? By adding a Location or Folder?

Also, is there a Album List left pane and a Library Viewer Selection to be able to sort by album? Otherwise all media in a folder is just listed in one big list.

Can you play DSF files as is or do you require a plugin to be installed like in the PC version?

Thanks

Coming from VLC and having never used foobar before this macOS, UI seems pretty straight-forward
Quote

I just clicked "Default Playlist" and dragged my FLAC folder into the window.
It took quite a while to load (about 200 GB), but that may have been provoked by
having selected (album) with (apply gain & prevent clipping) in ReplayGain preferences

foobar2000 occasionally hesitates for up to 2 seconds on a High Sierra iMac
while playing flac from a smbfs 1000baseT network SSD with no other activity.
That SSD is attached to a router by USB 3.0.

Running commands like this from that iMac provokes considerable pauses in foobar2000 play:
Code: [Select]
$ time cat /Volumes/USB1TB/FLAC/Tom\ Petty/Wildflowers/01\ Wildflowers.flac >> /dev/null

real 0m9.764s
user 0m0.001s
sys 0m0.030s

Running a similar command while VLC plays from the same drive provokes no such hesitation;
VLC presumably employs more buffering.. but it does not implement ReplayGain.

How problematic is foobar2000 buffering in macOS?

Just discovered foobar for Mac.  I tried it after reading that Ted Smith of PS Audio favors it.  I’ve got to say, it’s pretty terrific with the classical and jazz that I play.  Music through foobar sounds like itself, not some processed version.  Nice job, and I’m looking forward to continued enhancements.  Thanks, Peter!

Dear Peter!

First of all, thanks a lot for developing Foobar on Mac. Foobar was my favorite audio player for years since I changed to Mac and there is still no alternative, which fits all my needs.

I just wanted to ask for two things to add. The most important feature I'm still missing, is the integration of the folder structure of my music folder, as I had this on PC. It allows me to navigate through my music without changing between foobar and finder, that's very comfortable. Without it I can't really use Foobar, because it doesn't make sense for me to add all my music in one playlist.

The second point is just the colour theme of foobar. I'm not using the dark mode in Mac OS, so I have to deal with the white theme of foobar in the normal mode of Mac OS. But the white theme isn't very comfortable, so I would be really happy, if I would have an option to change the colour of foobar. The dark blue of the PC version was really nice for example.

Thanks a lot for the good work and keep going on!

Hello,

I'm trying to add my whole /Users/myUser/Music folder to f2k for mac Version 2.1.46 (1)  but the playlist isnt filled with music, but only 3 itmes...and none of them is mp3.

I have several mp3 albums included in my folders, which play nice, when I add the folders directly via drag&drop.

I have also included the complete HVSC (sid music) collection into my /Users/myUser/Music folder.

For me, it is not important, that sids are not added, because no component is available atm, but its important that no mp3 is added to the playlist when dragging the folder /Users/myUser/Music onto a playlist.

As there is not crash, I can only offer screenshots:

Hello Peter.
Thank you for the player I am using constantly.
Would like to report a missing functionality that force me to stick to the old version 2.1.27 (3) - playback resume on application launch. It is the last version I was able to find that supports this feature.

It looks like the player state saving is "not okay" as all versions are able to continue play after I close the 2.1.27 (3) build. But resume after close is not working on later versions: close while playing 2.1.27(3) - start 2.1.47 - auto play works  8), but close 2.1.47 - start 2.1.47 - no playback resume :( .
I don't mind using the old version so if this is not solved it remains a cool player. But with this issue "resolved" I think it would be better  :D
I am using High Sierra 10.13.6 (17G7024) hackintosh if that matters.
Cheers.

Huge Thanks for the long awaited, sorely needed Mac alternative. THX!

As a newbie to Mac 10.14.5, though not  to Fubar 2K, and  and  blind to boot, I must use Apple accessibility feature Voice over key commands to operate the system and all apps..

1  will FB for MAC see an auto update feature?
1a is there a rec for updating FB for MAC? Ie., uninstall previous ver first? Install new ver then delete old ver?

2 Unlike previous ver., FB2K 2.1.50  allows Voice over to enunciate controls, buttons, etc., during playback.  thanks much! BUT, Am I detecting less fidelity in playback as the result?

3  activating content inside of tables presently mandates the use of a mouse. Keyboard interactions do NOT enable content to be activated using Apple VO key commands, e.g.  Enter, Return, or Ctrl + Opt + space bar strokes will not initiate playback. Only a mouse or file menu commands work to that end even after interacting with said table.

Lastly
4.  On any platform of FB2K will there ever be a set of default key commands for navigating playback, ie., stop, next, previous, pause, etc., without utilizing the GuI buttons, menus,  or delving into the Press on Windows to configure it/them?
Blind users would certainly appreciate this!

,  Otherwise, many, many thanks for letting  Windows, and now, Apple users acquire you’re playback software.
I’m sure MAC users can not wait to see their versions mature and gain greater competency, in time. Much gratitude!

Thanks for the active development, it improves every time I revisit it and I love to see it happen. I agree with most of the requests petitioned so far, but I wanted to chip in and say that I'd like to see the UI be more standardized with macOS. My main gripes are the panel being at the bottom instead of the top (see iTunes, other Apple apps, Swinsian, etc), and the playback buttons being custom, rather Android-like in design, instead of drawn as the ones provided by macOS. I strongly think it would be an improvement as far as integration and consistency is concerned (see how they'd automatically change with the OSs version, look alike with other apps, etc).

I also wanted to say that I can't believe some of the format it plays! Again, thanks for taking the time to do this.
Title: Re: foobar2000 for mac
Post by: blindjim on 2019-08-19 15:23:57
again, any movement on adding short cut keys for playback, and providing an auto update path, enabling keyboard commands to work the app 100% rather than forcing the sporadic use of a mouse  to activate items in tables?

once more,I'd wish to convey immense gratitude for the MAC FB2K app. huge THX.

How can I achieve dark theme, like in this screenshot?

Would it be possible to remember (on app close) and load (on app start) value from right-bottom combo box? Currently, after startup, it is always set to "Default order".

It would be also really nice to have shortcuts for:

Not sure this was not asked already.

Currently (at least in build 2.1.48) there are no keyboard shortcuts for playback.
Enter to play track under cursor from the beginning, Space to Pause/Resume.
This is the default behaviour in most players for Mac.
And this is very useful, because there is no need to move cursor to the corresponding button and click, or even double-click.

Too hard to operate this player without such a simple feature.

Nero's AAC is inferior to Apple's anyway. Not to mention that you need to acquire it somehow.

Hi all :)
Thanx so much for this Mac version :)
It SEEMS to me the first time I used Foobar, playing music from my Mac, stored on my Synology drive, output on my AVR, I DID get the display of artist track etc... Now I only get "Foobar 2000 Audio streaming" on my Denon AVR, Album cover on my TV etc.
Is this something I can setup ? Not sure If I changed something somewhere that changed that...
Thanx for your help :)

First of all, thank you so much for the Mac version! One question I'd like to ask, is there any way to configure the buffer size for reading from network drives? I'd like to read my library over a VPN connection from a NAS and it require a huge buffer for smooth playback. Something like 32 MB at least.
Is there any value for this in the SQLite file?

Really?
When did this happen?
15 years ago it was the other way around!
Are there any recent decent ABX tests about this?

EDIT: I just remembered, that the reason for choosing Nero was quality based encoding.
But has the quality of Apple's codec improved in 15 years?
Back then they were on par for my ears.

ffs, I can't find any of our old listening tests.

They were on par with each other, really. The elevation of Apple's over Nero's was within the margin of error.

Just beware, Nero only ever built their encoder for Windows and Linux, so you'll have to somehow cook up a Wine compatibility layer to even run it on macOS. And if you were thinking of using an AMD "Hackintosh", forget about that, CrossOver's 32 bit on 64 bit compatibility layer only works on Intel processors.

Dear Foobar developers,
I'd be happy to support financially development of some options for Mac users:
1. Playlist view: ability to view "custom field" based on file's tags (a lot of custom tags i've created during windows times with foobar2000).
2. Library view and organisation the same as foobar under windows: artist/genre/year grouping, thus the total library can be groped and searched visually by criteria.
3. Search option.

I appreciate comments.
Thanks.

Hi all.
For anybody who seeks for the sorting functionality in playlist (like on windows, separate sub menu) there is a way to arrange it by file path. Right click on playlist header (above tracks), select "File path" and sort by it. For some reason that was not so obvious for me. Maybe help someone else :)

Again, thanks for the great player.
Cheers :)

Hi, there is an annoying bug when adding multiple CD albums. When I drag and drop it into app, they are not sorted by path / subfolder, but they are sorted by track names. So for example CD1/b.flac, CD2/a.flac would result in CD2 before CD1 in the playlist.

I tried a few years ago to brew some version of fb2k, but I didn't succeed. So, I've used 1.0 that somebody brewed and shared back in 2011.
Maybe I should try again with newer version, since there are all these good instructions nowadays...

Hi Peter,

I use Foobar for Mac to access a SMB network library over wireless. There are frequent dropouts, usually a few seconds in length. I've experimented playing the same files with VLC, resulting in no dropouts. If this is a buffering issue, then could it be made an adjustable preference?

Thank you

I've been super impressed with the progress made on the MacOS build. Only think I personally need now is the transcode function, then I can finally ditch my Wine install.

Thanks for this Peter, it's a much cleaner solution

XLD is very good, but personally I am more well verses in Foobar (and generally prefer the interface) - so when trying to do something odd or technical, Foobar is my go-to.

Plus, I can see the benefits in having a single app do all this :-) One step at a time though.

I only learned to use the alternatives because they were the best available alternatives for a given OS. For instance, if I ever have to do rips on my VM host, I'll be using Fre:ac, since it's a Linux host machine.

What is the goal with this build Peter? Is it eventually going to replicate the features of the Windows build, or will it continue to be a 'lite' version of Foobar? Personally, I'm very eager to have the convertor added to it, then I can likely drop my wine installation. Would that be a conflict of interestes though? As I know some of the dB apps that do this are popular on MacOS - I've bought AssetUPnP myself.

I don't care about time lines or anything, I'm just interested in what you think the future may hold for this build (especially as Apple continues to deliver sub standard players in their recent OSs)

Hello thank you very much for this port to MacOS, even in this current state it is very useful. I have a few questions concerning the integrated equalizer, it takes a few more details to actually use it properly:
- well, the current value of each slider would be the primary need
- what are the min and max dB values for each slider? (e.g. -20 dB/+20 dB)
- what is the bandwidth for each frequency?
- what accuracy do sliders have? (e.g. 1 dB or 0.1 dB)

Cheers

Hi! Huge thanks for creating foo2k for mac.

I have a couple of question that may (or may not be) on your agenda (*):
* option to *not*-replacing current playlist when opening files from the OS (it's a bit annoying especially with radio stations - one has to search again for the links)
* option to handle shortcuts - at least something basic to start/stop playback, could be with spacebar (though, support for global multimedia keys would be very appreciated)

(* - btw, do you have any "bugtrack" where one could see/suggest things?)

Most of my FLAC files reside on a NAS and I just use a shared volume to play them back.  This setup worked fine when using AFP as the sharing protocol, but my recent migration to SMB has caused some problems with FB2Kmac.  Any file I attempt to open now returns:

Playback error: File is already in use
On: "/Volumes/path/to/file"

None of the metadata appears to have even been read in, so the playlist just shows the filename.

I have full read/write permissions on the files and other media players don't seem to have any problems playing them back.  Also, I have no issue using this setup with FB2K on the windows side.

Any guidance on things to check would be appreciated.  Thanks.

EDIT: I should also add the same files work fine once copied and accessed locally.

Good afternoon.

Thank you for the mac version. On my sound system it gives very good sound!

I use the mac mini connected to Naim Mu-so 2 to play files stored either on the internal ssd drive or on external hard drives connected to the mac mini via usb. Albums are put into foobar playlist window via drag'n'drop.

Originally I used the mac mini's connection to the Mu-so 2 via an optical cable. In the foobar, the built-out output was chosen. With this configuration, everything works with no problems.

Then I started using the connection to the Mu-so 2 via UPnP. Foobar has Mu-so 2 listed in UPnP devices, connection is no problem. In this case the sound is better, and I would like to use this option. However, there is an issue - from time to time playback stops. This usually happens in the second part or near the end of the album. When this happens, you can notice that the ball on the progress bar is slightly shaking. Pressing pause and play restores playback. Once restored, the album plays through to the end. This does not happen every time, maybe in one from two or three albums.

I have tried increasing or decreasing the buffer, it seems to make no difference, stops continue to happen.

I will be very glad if it is possible to eliminate this little bug. The sound is great!

Thanks.

When dragging/dropping my FLAC folders into FB2K for Mac, I noticed the app crashing without explanation.  I found that the cause was any folder that contained .zip files.  After moving the .zip files out of the FLAC directories, the media in them indexed properly, ignoring other files in the directories (.pdf, thumbs.db, etc.).

My FLACs are on a NAS server accessed by SMB.  I've been experimenting with the buffering settings to prevent playback errors over Wi-Fi.  I'm curious to know if FB2K is treating the files it sees at \Volume\<sharename> as local or remote from a "Playback/Buffering" settings standpoint.  I'm trying different playback and output buffer settings to try to eliminate dropouts.

Thanks, Peter!

It does use a database, for individual playlists at least. foobar2000 for macOS is very much the same near-total-rewrite of the core code base as the mobile ports that followed it. Yes, followed it, because the macOS version was made as the lead-in to porting to iOS, then to Android. It was only revived for eventual public release with some pestering.

The new code base includes such niceties as every storage object, including playlists, and the media library where supported, being SQLite databases. Although some settings within the database are still binary objects, they're fairly easy to unpack, and the overall structure makes things considerably more transparent.

Not to mention that all these SQLite databases are disk backed, rather than being fully memory resident at all times. Great pains went into making this as performant as a fully memory based database, or at least decently close to what it was, without losing the gains of having all data disk resident and fairly failure tolerant.

At the worst, a few things have caused these databases to crash the player, and have led to more bug fixes and fault tolerance, mostly handled in testing rather than ending up in the hands of a wide audience and causing so much data loss. (One of these crashes was due to some software I was developing in a component to crash, and caused a corrupt SQLite database. This was fixed with a database repair pass.)

The various things haven't been seeing as much love as some people might hope, mainly because Peter can only work on one major task at a time, or else I assume he gets too burned out, or distracted by work load. Let's not forget he also has primary tasks involving work for dbPowerAmp's Spoon. Those are the things that pay the bills directly. Oh, and a wife and kids and various pets to contend with. That's no small job, either.

Even I don't get a response from either Spoon or Peter that quickly, or at all sometimes. Yes, I realize they're both super busy people. And maybe I've earned their ire for being a 6 month hire who didn't live up to expectations.

This cue sheet consistently crashes the player, and loading it also gets the player stuck in a crash on startup loop, because it saves the fact it was trying to play the file, and tries to play it again on restart.

The beta 2 worked fine, but beta 3 has problem for me with MacBook Air 2020 / macOS Monterey 12.5.1 + USB DAC (Chord's QUTEST). When I playback FLAC 2ch 24bit/96kHz file, I hear very strange sound (wrong tempo? wrong pitch? and huge noise) in only Right channel. The foobar2000 on my old Mac doesn't list my USB-connected external DAC as output device but does list my wireless buds.

The fb2k is v2.3; the macOS is 10.15.7; the DAC is RME ADI-2 DAC FS; and the wireless buds are iPods Pro.

The fb2k v2.3 can play tracks on the built-in speakers and iPods. But it doesn't see the DAC at all.

Other audio player apps I have used (Roon and QXPlayer) work well with the DAC.

Is there anything I missed?

1) Not able to see external output device(Audient ID4). It shows as a sound output on mac and other djing tools.
2) Is there a way to import fpl playlist (playlists-v1.4) from windows setup to mac?
3) Is it possible to run 2 instances of Foobar on mac ( one for pre-listing and other for playing)?

Mac: MacBook Air ( M1, 2020)

Hi, I've been using foobar2000 for MAC since the first version came out, thank you very much for making the MAC version,

There has always been a problem that bothers me :'( , when you close the foobar2000 window, the app will automatically exit. This design is different from many MacOS software, could you please change it to Command+ W just to close the window, and the music will continue to play in the background, while Command+ Q is to completely exit foobar2000

In fact, I wanted to leave a message before, but I felt that the development focus was on the Windows platform until I found that the new version 2.5 added a lot of new features, so I asked if I could change it...

I just wanted to add a whole-hearted THANKS to Peter for the Mac version 2.5 with the media library, album list, facets, etc. — ever since I switched to a Mac in 2019 I've been missing fb2k, so this is really a fantastic development. It even made me reactivate this account, 17 years after I created it! 😅

If there's a place to donate/contribute, I'd be more than happy to.

Thanks again
Alex.

I agree with this, it’s odd behaviour for a MacOS app and has caused me to unintentionally kill my music many times

Thanks for this feature rich update !
I am tempted to return to Mac to try some M1/M2 goodness now FB2K has library functionality and (Re)Facets on it

Please could you implement "Save all playlists", which in the windows version is reached by holding the Shift key before clicking on the File menu. 🙏

Hello, the new feature rich update is awesome! Thank you so much!!

I'm now starting to believe that foobar2000 will eventually raise in all its beauty on MacOS platform as well. This really made my day.

Would be happy to donate or maybe even help with porting some plugin if there is going be to some plugin API (probably in far future).

Hi, for me "find" does not work with foobar for mac, it's greyed out.
I can't do it with cmd + f, and can't do it from the menu either.

In fact, most of the "Edit" actions are greyed out (as you can see in the image).
If I could only have "find" working (!), I don't even care for the other actions ...

I see there was somebody else on the previous page asking about this.
Any updates or when this feature might be implemented ? Quite a core functionality ..
That's not to say I don't appreciate you making it for macOS to begin with, of course. Thank you so much for that !

(Also another vote from me for cmd + w to be closing the window but allowing the app to play in the background, with cmd + q closing the app entirely - ie. the somewhat standardized behaviour of apps on macOs)

- Apple silicon (M1 Pro)
- macOS Monterrey 12.5.1
- foobar2000 for Mac, v2.5 beta 10 (with 2.3 being the stable version still. First I tried the stable, then this beta).

Regarding "Find", I just noticed there is "View" > "Playlist search", which does the job !
I suppose it's just a matter of mapping cmd + f to that action then, instead of the greyed out "Find" placeholder ?

And/or - What about the playlist search be part of the main window, is that a difficult thing to achieve? Genuinely asking.
Because (especially) without the hotkey, I'll keep both windows open, but it's somewhat of a pain point to use mission control with 20 other things open and foobar split in multiple windows too.
Also asking because currently that playlist search has to be manually opened and resized each time the app starts.
Overall this UX can be quite majorly improved, factually speaking. And again, not to say I'm not majorly grateful for what we have so far already. Thanks !

Hi,
This is to report a bug of the latest beta 11 of foobar2000 for Mac, v2.5.

Problem: The following menu items don't work and foobar2000 says an error.
  File -> Add Files
  File -> Add Folder
Error Message: The open file operation failed. The open file operation failed to connect to the open and save panel service.
My Environment: macOS Ventura 13.0.1 on MacBook Air (Intel, 2020)
Remark: Alternatively, drug and drop operations of the files / folder work.

Thanks for developing foobar2000 for Mac!

What did you try? Some key combinations are reserved for global system functionality. Unfortunately, not all invalid shortcuts are blocked from being created, they just don't work. And of course, the shortcuts you can create only work with macfoo having focus. Global shortcuts aren't possible as far as I know.

I configured shortcuts for Copy  and Paste on system preference. These shortcuts were updated on Foobar>Edit panel> , however in disabled state, in both Foobar stable and beta version.

Only shortcut that works is 'Select All' Foobar Beta version and 'Delete' in both versions.

Hello,

I'm also really happy to see the Mac version of Foobar getting some love. I use it on Windows for many years but could never quite find a player which is as good on Mac, so seeing the major leap forward that version 2.5 is was amazing!

My post here is also just to second a request for a keyboard shortcuts section in Foobar's preferences. I'm blind and rely on the VoiceOver screen reader and use the computer exclusively from the keyboard. One of the most important things I need regular access to is keys to adjust Foobar's volume up and down, and currently the only way I can do that is manually navigate to the volume slider in the toolbar and adjust it which can be difficult if any loud audio is drowning out the speech. I can't add shortcuts for this using the Mac OS settings, because while I can get volume commands to show up if I Shift+Click the playback menu like on Windows adding shortcuts for "Up" and "Down" don't work. The same is true for seeking in the file and lastly the Mac OS settings don't accept the spacebar as a valid key for play/pause which I'd love to be able to do like the previous poster.

Down the road it would also be cool to have options for both global and local hotkeys like in Windows, where I had global keys for volume adjustment as well as combinations to change tracks that were easier to press than my keyboards media key combinations, but that can come later.

Finally, one small keyboard-related thing to report, it currently doesn't appear to be possible to start playback of an entry in the album list by pressing enter on it. This works in Windows but currently not on Mac. I can work around it by selecting "send to current playlist" from the context menu, but being able to press enter would be more convenient. :)

Hi Peter, thanks for all you do for making a Mac version of foobar2000!

I recently upgraded to 2.5 beta 18 to see what was different over 2.3. I've run into some weird behavior....it cannot remember the position I last had it opened to.  For example, if I resized the window to see all of the information, and then close the program, when I reopen it, it will reset to a small screen on my main monitor.  Not sure if its a bug, or if its normal, but 2.3 never did that.  It would always remember I had it last opened on my secondary monitor and I didn't have to resize or touch it.  I have an M1 mac mini running Ventura.

Noticed the color text syntax in playlist still not supported yet, is it limited on macOS, or it's just still not implemented yet?
https://wiki.hydrogenaud.io/index.php?title=Foobar2000:Title_Formatting_Reference#Playlist_text_color

But my biggest wish right now is the groups support in playlist, plain playlist is really a mess look.

Thanks, Peter.

I got the same, I believe it's not a bug, it's simply lack the feature, or just not implemented at all with the resize.

Hi, long-time foobar user here, just migrated to mac (damn you M1, no regrets here) and it's great to see at least some version here. I'd very much vote for these features:

- last.fm scrobbling
- dsd playback
- tree structure for playlists + file browser

I hope they will be considered, I would gladly support further development.

Have a nice day, anyone...

I co-sign the Last.FM scrobbler, or maybe more broadly, perhaps a solution to not being able to add components to the Mac versions. I know this has been a recurring request for years, but I am just adding to the pile.

Hi.  I seem to be having an issue with the new "Exclusive" mode in 2.5 b21.

When I'm using my RME ADI-2 DAC FS (latest firmware, USB), it does not show up in the Output -> Devices list.  It works as the "Default" device but not as an exclusive device.

However, when I plug in my JDS Labs Element III, it lists the device by name with an exclusive choice.

Is there a reason the RME ADI-2 acts differently?

I use foobar2000-v2.5_beta_21 on an M1 MacMini.
I installed Fidelia (from App Store) and Audirvana Studio too.
In all I don't use volume control or set them to max.
I hear a little loudness difference between Foobar2000 and the others. Foobar2000 seems me a little bit louder.
What could be the cause of this?

I plan to create a longer 1kHz wav file with a tool and then measure the output voltage at the DAC with my True RMS digital voltmeter.

Sorry if I am missing something obvious or not seeing previous discussion, but I'd like to get Mac Fb2k to resume playing a track after closing and restarting the app.  In Windows this was easy and could be set in Preferences; I don't see any such option in the Mac version, which _does_ start playing the last track I was listening to, after restart; but from its beginning, not from the point at which the app was closed.
There are apparently components that can help with this, but afaik all components still don't work with the Mac version?

Thank you for this Mac version!

I wanted to report a bug regarding File Operations. If I add songs to the playlist via the Media Library (like Album List or ReFacets) and then use the File Operations > Move feature, it will try to move the files even if there is no change in the file name. The operation then fails with an "Object already exists" error. I do not see this issue with songs that were added using File > Add Files.

To reproduce:
1. Add a song to the default playlist from Album List.
2. Select File Operations > Move to > ...
3. Specify Pattern such that there is no change in the existing file name.
4. Click Run.
Result: "Object already exists" error

I would guess this is related to the fact that if I look at the Properties dialog for a Media Library file, the file path is prefixed by "file:///". Maybe this causes the comparison to fail.

I use Foobar 2.6 last preview on Mac M2. It is the best audio player for me on Mac. All works fine (i need only more filters like in Windows version, table live editing, search by current title/album/artist etc.), but if i create playlist and name it, then move it to other order place, it takes again name "New playlist". After Foobar restart this playlist takes right name.

Great work and thanks Peter.

Got a confusing bug to report. I'm using the newest version v2.6-2023-07-10 on MacOS Mojave.

All my songs are stored in NAS and are accessed through SMB. I add the network disk/folder path to Media Library, everything is OK, including infos and playback.

However, after I close/quit foobar2000 and re-open the app, it keeps re-index the whole library. I've got more than 1TB songs in ALAC format. Every time it re-index cost a lot of time, could you please see to it? Thanks.

Foobar2000 v2.6 could import fp, m3u8, m3u too.

In save playlist dialog window I must write a filename
if I write a filename without extension it creates a fp filetype
but if I append the extension .m3u8 or .m3u it creates the right filetype.

Ability to group tracks into the playlists

HI.

F2K for Mac is a great program and works great.

The interface is very "spartan", basic, but that's fine. Only one thing is missing: the ability to group tracks in a playlist according to a certain titleformatting string, just like it's possible in F2K for windows.

The playlist, as it is now, takes up almost the entire screen to show data that repeats the same for each track, while grouping the fixed data for each album like it does with F2K on windows would not only make the playlists take up less space, but also make the tracklist easier to read.

Foobar2000 with Output Device: USB HS Audio Device [exclusive] changes the transmission format in Mac's audio-MIDI setup analogous to audio file format. But often only if you click on the piece of music a second time.
The Audirvana player bypasses these settings, you then see the audio device (DAC): (zero) 44.1 kHz - but the music stream is transmitted 1:1, which can be seen on the DAC. Is it planned to do this directly in Foobar2000 for Mac or as an add-on.
Unfortunately, I am not a developer who can give the necessary tips.

Attached screenshots from Audio-MIDI-Setup - Adirvana versus foobar2000

Someone writing a 3rd party ui component using the official SDK would be the first step. This is now possible and is what the entry in the changelog means.

Looks like the new beta has gotten components support. This is awesome! However I could not get any .mod, .sid, .xm, .vgz, .vgm, .ym and .ay files to play after installing the DEAF and GME components. Can anyone help?

Edit: NSF files do work. But that's the only VGM format I could get working.

So since v2.6 2023-09-07 preview there is now component support on macOS, which is amazing.
Could someone perhaps make a guide of sorts on how to port components to the new SDK 2.0 and make them mac compatible?
Hope this ain't a long-shot. Fingers crossed for a mac-compatible scrobbler component.

DEAF module decoder fixed, get a new foobar2000 Mac build. Component itself wasn't the issue.

Annoyingly it was working with debug build of foobar2000, not with release.

As of porting existing components,
Assuming that you're competent at both Windows and Mac OS development - you need to turn your DLL into a Mac OS component bundle and underlying Windows user interface into Mac user interface. If your component has no user interface of its own, it should be pretty straightforward.

Thanks for the reply, Peter.
This confirms my findings after spending a couple of hours setting up Xcode and checking out the foo_audioscrobbler repo. Unfortunately my C knowledge is very limited (I'm used to Kotlin/Java).

Here's hoping someone with the knowledge notices this and creates mac port.

Awesome! Thanks for posting, and for all your work on the mac port. It's fantastic to witness the progress.
I've tested now .spc, .mod, .xm, .nsf and .vgz working fine. Loving it!
I could not play .AY and .SID files, but I seem to recall there was a separate SID component for the windows version.

Can components be upgraded directly from the app if there are new versions, or do they need to be installed manually? (and if so, do you then need to uninstall the current component first?)

Much love!

When there are several components installed that supports the same audio format (e.g. DEAF and OpenMPT play .mod and .xm) - is it possible to see which one is in use for the particular format?

HI.

On FB2k for mac I would like to do the following thing: I search the library for a group of tracks and then I copy that group into an existing playlist (not an auto-playlist).
Then I search for another group of tracks and copy this new group into the same playlist as before.

It may seem strange, but I can't do this simple thing.

How can I perform this procedure?

drag'n'drop between playlists seems not to be implemented.

btw, is "autoplaylist" implemented? all i can see is that it is ghosted, so i can't select it.

First of all, thanks dev(s) for making this version!

One question about resource usage — even when audio is paused, Foobar seems to be chugging away doing something in the background, I don't even have any folders selected for media library scanning.

One of the nice things about the Windows version was that when you pressed the [ stop ] button, the app was extremely lean on resource usage. Is there some other level of lower activity the app could enter via a stop button?

Posted this in the Support forum the other day, got no response. Maybe here? Replaygain isn’t working for me.

My Flac files all have ReplayGain tags. My Source Mode is set to "Track". Processing Mode is set to "apply gain"... no difference.

Even when I move the Preamp levels to -20 or +20 (or anywhere in between)...no difference.

What might I be missing here?

(Yes, the replay gain tags are applied in a different program. Also yes, I rescanned a few in foobar to test if there was a difference. Still not working.)

Yes, "autoplaylist" is implemented.
Try this:

library -> search

In the "search" box write

genre HAS blues

click on the button with the three dots to the right of the "search" box -> click on

Create autoplaylist

nice, thanks. what i would like to accomplish is that foobar automatically adds new songs from a folder to the playlist on startup so i don't manually have to do it every time i put a new audio file in my music folder. perhaps there is a simpler way i haven't thought of.

Bug report: I'm getting "Unrecoverable playback error: Audio Unit rendering error" when using Audio Unit plugins. This happens with Apple's AUGraphicsEQ, AUNBandEQ, and the free TDR Nova plugin here https://www.tokyodawn.net/tdr-nova/

This does not happen on every track but like 90%? Once it happens, it will keep happening no matter the track. I'm using each plugin by itself with no other DSP to confirm it's a problem with Audio Unit. Happens with different output devices. Tracks are 320kbps mp3.

Thank you for this Mac build.

Up to version 2.5 I never had a problem with installation, but my Mac (running 10.14.6 Mojave) refuses to let me run the installer for 2.6 - it "can't be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software. This software needs to be updated. Contact the developer for more information".

Thank you for your work on the MacOS version of Foobar2000.
A few wishes for a future versions:

ReFacets doesn’t work like it does in the Windows version:
ReFacets on Windows creates a playlist called “Library Viewer Selection.”
When you single click on something in a Windows ReFacets filter, it gets sent to that playlist.
On the MacOS version of ReFacets, no playlist is created, and you need to double click for it to get sent to a playlist. The option “Create Autoplaylist” does nothing.

Selecting all:
If all items in a playlist are selected (e.g. by pressing CMD+A or by sending a selection to a playlist via ReFacets), you can’t unselect with the mouse. You can only unselect by pressing arrow up or arrow down.

Media keys support.

Configurable keyboard shortcuts:
Not being able to configure keyboard shortcuts within the MacOS version of Foobar2000, I know that you can go to MacOS’ system settings and assign keyboard shortcuts to programs, but MacOS Foobar2000 has no “Play or pause” command, so assigning a keyboard shortcut to “Play” just restarts the currently playing track. Also, you can’t use just the space bar. A “Play or pause” in the menu bar would be nice, even if configurable keyboard shortcuts still take a while.

Being able to merge windows:
Please allow us to merge the ReFacets window with the main Foobar2000 window.

Quittung when closing windows:
Like MacOS programs, Foobar2000 should not quit completely when you close its window(s).

I don't know if this is intended behavior or a bug but when using external headphones exclusive output volume is reduced around 10dB. I have not tried this with an external USB DAC.

To me it's particularly important to fix where the app completely quits when the red button is clicked to close the window. As for the feature set, I'm OK with it.

Title: Re: foobar2000 for mac
Post by: eagleray on 2024-02-03 22:48:45
I'm no longer sure that closing the app rather than closing the window by clicking on the red button is a bug. There are proper Mac apps which close with the red button because they follow a single window model. I don't know if the accessory windows like the library classify footer as multi window or single window.

What I can say is fb2k is easily the best free music player for MacOS. It has a proper library and built in parametric EQ along with several other useful DSP functions. When one tries what else is out there it becomes apparent how important these features are. What surprises me is there are lots of web pages showing music players for MacOS and only one or two list FB2k.

I tried using exclusive mode with a USB DAC this evening and did not notice the reduction in gain I saw using the Mac's headphone jack. Maybe it's got something to do with how the Mac's headphone jack is implemented.

I love the mac version! Thank you for the continuous development!

One quite annoying bug is that when I'm listening to my radio collection, if there is a buffer problem on one of the stations it automatically goes to the next one. It's quite annoying, like you are listening to some quiet, late night music and then it pauses and goes to a rock station.

Can you make it so that it either stops playing or restarts automatically?

I know nothing about macs but I'd assume the file type is associated and you can double click it (is double clicking even a thing - probably not  ;D )

Failing that, there must be preferences dialog you can explore??

Failing that, can you drag/drop the file on to fb2k while it's running. Clutching at straws territory here.  :-X

edit: changelog for 2.6 says there is a preferences page...

Several preview versions of fb2k for Mac have been published. The issues related to remembering window size and position are fixed or mostly fixed. Other issues appear are being resolved mainly in parallel to development of version 2.2 for Windows.

I consider this to be far and away the best free music player for MacOS. It has a real library, a functional minimalist interface and the best feature, IMO, is the built in parametric eq.

I think you can inherit the settings and playlists by backing up the ~/Library/foobar2000 folder and also backing up the com.foobar2000.mac.plist file in ~/Library/Preferences.

Thank you for this version of Foobar2000 for Mac!

[Feature Request] A status bar displaying the total duration and the number of tracks in the currently displayed playlist.

Enable or disable the status bar using a toggle similar to the standard Finder shortcut:
View > Show Status Bar (Cmd /)
View > Hide Status Bar (Cmd /)

An example of the basic information to include in the status bar:
63 tracks, 2 hours 38 minutes 58 seconds
Estimated completion time of the playlist: 22:33
This is akin to the Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) feature in GPS systems.

I believe this information is vital, especially for those using foobar2000 on macOS for DJing at social events.

Such a feature of course could be made to work on a Mac, nothing in the Apple ecosystem would prevent any kind of cover display feature from operating. But you most likely did not mean to ask that.

The existing Coverflow component is 100% Windows based and obviously can't work in Mac-version of foobar2000.
And converting existing components for Mac is not a simple thing. One would need to have a new-enough Mac for testing and development, those machines cost a lot of money. But that's not enough, developers also need to pay Apple for the privilege of releasing software for the platform. And to top it all you need to learn new programming language(s) to get things done.

A few components are listed on the Mac page at foobar2000.org. Due to the decentralized nature of the foobar ecosystem you are going to have to convince individual developers of the various plugin components to make a Mac version available. Don't expect too much.
