Title: WMPCDText - CD-Text plug-in for Windows Media Player
Post by: Tim De Baets on 2007-08-13 02:56:20
I have released WMPCDText, a Windows Media Player plug-in that finally adds support for CD-Text to WMP.

There is an option to automatically read CD-Text from unknown CD's. Alternatively, you can also right-click on a CD-track in the Now Playing-pane while the CD is playing, and click "Read CD-Text". There are some other options too, those can be changed in the plug-in's settings dialog.

Download (http://bmproductions.fixnum.org/download/download.php?prog=WMPCDText&file=http://users.skynet.be/tim.debaets/software/WMPCDText-1.4.exe)

Enjoy!

Tim De Baets

September 1, 2007: I have updated WMPCDText with a fix for crashes that might occur in wmpvis.dll when a visualization is enabled in WMP. Please re-download and reinstall WMPCDText if WMP crashes when you advance to the next track, and these crashes started happening after installing WMPCDText.

December 22, 2007: I have released the final version: http://bmproductions.fixnum.org/wmpcdtext (http://bmproductions.fixnum.org/wmpcdtext)

July 9, 2008: WMPCDText 1.1 has been released. This new version fixes the "Error while executing SCSI command: SRB completed with error (4)" message.

July 28, 2009: WMPCDText 1.2 adds full compatibility with Windows Media Player 12 on Windows 7.

July 20, 2012: WMPCDText 1.3 fixes the Read CD-Text menu item not appearing in certain cases, and a possible crash when opening WMP 12.

August 15, 2012: WMPCDText 1.4 fixes an issue that was introduced in version 1.3 and that could lead to a Windows Media Player crash.

I have just released a first beta version of my plug-in, WMPCDText, that finally adds support for CD-Text to Windows Media Player.

The plug-in is written for Windows Media Player 10 and 11 running on Windows XP, 2003 or Vista. No other WMP or Windows versions are currently supported.

You're welcome  Positive feedback like this is always appreciated.

I'm pretty sure that the current release is already stable enough to be considered a final, non-beta release. The plug-in has been around for a few months now and no problems have been found, except for the wmpvis.dll crash which has already been fixed. This also means that everyone who wants to have CD-Text support in WMP can just install this plug-in without any worries.

Tim,

Echoing Craig's comment. Thanks for your WMP plug-in. I'm using WinXP Pro SP2 and WMPCDText works great. This should have been built-in, but I'm sure happy to have it now. Now where's that "Thumbs up" smilie ...?

I just tried it on my new Dell XPS 420 Vista machine.  Unfortunately, when I put in a CD and tried to read the cdtext I got an error:

Quote
Error while executing SCSI command: SRB completed with error (4)

Any idea what is going on?

Thanks,

Hi Tim,

Like neil, I am getting the following error for some CDs. After I get this error, CD Player does not recognize any other CDs (after the current CD) without rebooting. I use Windows XP pro with WMP 11.

******************************************************************************************
An error occurred while trying to get CD-Text:  Error while executing SCSI command: SRB completed with error (4).

Any help is appreciated. Is there a workaround?

Thanks,

Neil and Vijay, thanks for reporting this. There seems to be a bug in WMPCDText that prevents it from reading CD-Text on some systems. I'll do some tests and try to debug the problem as soon as possible and hopefully I'll have a fix ready by the end of next week. I'll make a new post in this thread when this fix is available for download.

Like neil, I am getting the following error for some CDs. After I get this error, CD Player does not recognize any other CDs (after the current CD) without rebooting. I use Windows XP pro with WMP 11.

Do you get the error for all CD's that have CD-Text, or is WMPCDText still able to read CD-Text from some CD's?

Thanks for the response, Tim. It happens only for few CDs. I will check the CD-Text for those and will let you know of any reason if I come to know. Thanks again.

I have done some testing but I haven't been able to reproduce the error, so I'm going to need more information:

What CD drive(s) do you use for burning and playing CD's? (brand and model)

Does the error happen on commercial CD's, on homemade CD's, or on both? In the case of commercial CD's, please give me 1 or more titles. If it happens on homemade CD's, what program do you use to burn the CD's? Did you also try WMPCDText on CD's that were burned by a different program?

Does the error message show up for CD's without CD-Text too?

Would it be possible to try WMPCDText on the same CD's, but in a different drive, or maybe on another system?

My DVD/CD drive is a TSSTcorp DVD+-RW TS-H653B

I hope that helps track down the problem.

I have finally been able to fix the "Error while executing SCSI command: SRB completed with error (4)" message and released WMPCDText 1.1 that includes this fix. The new version can be downloaded from my website.

Special thanks to lennie paz for helping me fix this bug and to nottenst for verifying that the fix works on Windows Vista too.

Hello everyone:

Unfortunately, this problem still occurs for me: "An error occurred while trying to get CD-Text: Error while executing SCSI command: SRB completed with error (4)".

I currently use WMP 10 and run Windows XP Professional Edition.

Could someone please suggest ways to solve this problem?

Thank you!

scherz0, are you sure that you're using WMPCDText 1.1? You can check the current version on the About-tab of WMPCDText properties (WMP Options - Plug-ins - Background, select WMPCDText and click Properties). Try uninstalling WMPCDText and doing a clean install of WMPCDText 1.1.

Are other programs like CDex able to read CD-Text from CD's?

Hi Tim,
I just downloaded ver 1.1 (confirmed) and get the same error when right clicking on a track.
Both the Settings are checked and when I noticed that the CDText was not showing up, I googled and found this forum.
I am running WIN XP Pro SP2 and as with scherz0 I am using WMP 10.00.00.4058.

Hi all, new to this forum so apologies if the subject is closed. I have the same problem reading track info on home burned cd's. Reading cd text in WMP11 doesn't work with the latest plugin. Reading cd's with nero real player or Creative CM5 also don't read. CDex only works after typing all the info in. It must hold the data within it's own "program" as it's there next time the cd is input. I'm running XP home on a Dell DIM4400 with DVD/rom drive TSSTcorp cd/DVDW SH-S182M (with latest firmware and driver).
With the common use nowadays of buying/downloading tracks the creation of home cd's is I would think quite frequent and it is therefore frustrating when playing the cd you can't access or display the track detail. I have use Ashampoo to burn discs but they don't supply cdex data anyway. Also used nero and WMP.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi Mike, your problem doesn't seem to be specific about WMPCDText, because other programs are unable to read the CD-Text too. According to information on the web, your drive does support CD-Text, but you should double-check this with Nero's InfoTool utility - http://www.nero.com/enu/support-nero8-tools-utilities.html (http://www.nero.com/enu/support-nero8-tools-utilities.html) .

If your drive supports CD-Text, then the CD's that you have tried probably don't contain CD-Text. WMP certainly doesn't write CD-Text information while burning a CD. I don't know about Ashampoo, but Nero should definitely write CD-Text when track and disc information is entered and your drive supports it. Go to Recorder > Choose Recorder, it should show that CD-Text is supported. Are you using the latest version of Nero?

Thanks for the prompt reply. I'm using Nero 6.6.0.19 which came with the drive when it was bought. The info tool I had to skip the first part as all disks inserted were "unsupported disk type" but the final info showed CD read text as "yes" but write as "no".  Not sure how to "Go to Recorder > Choose Recorder" . Maybe I'll try burning another cd with Nero.
Thanks again.

Sorry for not being clear enough, I was talking about the Recorder-menu at the top of Nero Burning Rom's main window. If you open it and click "Choose Recorder", a window should appear showing some of the capabilities of your drive, including CD-Text.

It looks like InfoTool isn't as reliable as I first thought, because it says that my drives can't write CD-Text either, even though I can let Nero write CD-Text to a new CD without any problems, and see the CD-Text information afterwards.

Also, updating Nero to a newer version might help. The latest version of Nero 6 is 6.6.1.15a, you can download a free update from http://www.nero.com/eng/downloads-nero6-update.php (http://www.nero.com/eng/downloads-nero6-update.php) .

Do you mean the Windows Media Player toolbar in the Windows task bar? It seems to work fine on my system, even with WMPCDText installed. Why exactly are you unable to use it? Do you get any error messages? What versions of Windows and Windows Media Player are you running? Does the problem go away when you uninstall WMPCDText?

I'll reply for Nobody777 since it happens for me as well. When I click the minimize button in WMP11 (Vista SP2) it used to minimise to a small inline toolbar player on the Windows Taskbar. Since installing your CD-Text add-in this no longer appears. No error messages but WMP11 just minimises to the Taskbar as a std running app button instead of the Toolbar Player in the Systray.  If I right-click the taskbar and choose Toolbars, the Windows Media Player toolbar is still ticked but clearly isn't working anymore.  Any ideas?

NigelS

BTW, the CD-Text plugin does its job otherwise very well!

Thank you for the information, NigelS. I have tried to reproduce the bug on Vista but wasn't very successful. There were a few occasions right after installing WMPCDText where the toolbar didn't appear, as you described. But simply closing and restarting WMP always restored it back to the normal behaviour for me, so it certainly wasn't permanent. It could be a problem specific to SP2 but I'll need more time to test that (I probably won't have enough time until the end of June though).

In the meantime, could you please check if disabling WMPCDText fixes the bug? You can disable WMPCDText by unchecking it in the Tools - Plug-ins menu of WMP. Then restart WMP and look if the normal behaviour is restored. If it is, it's also possible that re-enabling WMPCDText will still keep the normal behaviour, just try it and let me know the results.

Another action that might fix it is simply unchecking and checking the Windows Media Player toolbar in the Toolbars menu of the Taskbar. As with the previous suggestion, it can also be necessary to restart WMP after the toolbar has been disabled/enabled.

Thanks for responding. Pleased to say it seems to be working here now. The toolbar came back after a reboot of the PC. Now the CD-Text plugin is working great, I can't believe the feature is still missing from the latest WMP under Windows 7, your plug-in ought to be part of the std distribution.  Thanks again,

It loads into windows media player, when first installed, as a background plug in and works great BUT when I close media player and reopen it has gone, no where to be found, and I have to install it again each time I use media player.

Are you running a 64-bit version of Windows? These installations contain a 32-bit *and* a 64-bit version of WMP. WMPCDText is only compatible with the 32-bit WMP and it doesn't show up in the 64-bit one. The WMPCDText installer will always launch the 32-bit version when "Run Windows Media Player now" is checked, so that could explain why you only see the plug-in on first launch, if you otherwise always run the 64-bit version. This can be verified with Task Manager: look for wmplayer.exe in the Processes tab, it will have *32 next to it when it's the 32-bit version.

The solution is to make sure that you always run the 32-bit WMP. Usually, this means that you will have to change the target of each shortcut to WMP to the following:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe

Please let me know if that helps.

Really appreciate this plug-in! I just always lived with WMP not showing any of the CD text and it wasn't until I saw what Nero showtime displayed that I understood what WMP was missing.

Using your plug-in (v1.2) with Windows 7 - so far no problems. Perfectly displays CD title, track titles and track artist information.

No, it's not possible to burn CD-Text with WMP. For that, you will have to use a different burning program, such as Nero Burning Rom or the free Burrrn (http://www.burrrn.net/?page_id=4).

No, it's not possible to use WMPCDText from any programming language, because it doesn't expose an API to use (that would be out of the scope of the plug-in anyway).

WMPCDText is written in Delphi, and I have personally used the FreeBurner (http://www.dancemammal.com/cdburn.htm) library to read CD-Text. You might be able to port that library to C++. Another option is to look for a C++ SCSI library online, or to use the CD-Text routines in CDex (http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/)'s source code.

Apparently I have misinterpreted the purpose of the program.  I will continue to look for a WMP plug-in that will write text to CD tracks that I burn.

Indeed, WMPCDText will only add support for reading CD-Text, not writing. If you're looking for a WMP plug-in that will add CD-Text write support, then I'm afraid that such a thing doesn't exist. You will have to use another application for burning CDs, like Burrrn (http://www.burrrn.net/?page_id=4) or CDBurnerXP (http://cdburnerxp.se/) (both freeware), or Nero/Roxio software.

I'm still bothered by the fact that WMP stops functioning, if this is caused by WMPCDText then I would like to have this fixed. When exactly is this happening? Does it still occur if you uncheck Automatically try to read CD-Text from unknown CDs in WMPCDText's options?

I just installed WMPCDText on my Win7 Pro machine with WMP 12. I love the tool. MS should have built this in WMP. Thanks for providing a great solution.

I have a "curious behavior" question. I don't know if this is related to WMPCDText or WMP itself. When I put in a CD that has CD-Text onboard and launch WMP, the CD-Text comes up as it should. However, the info then seems to be cached such that it can not be updated. As a case example, I created a custom music mix using ImgBurn. I created the CUE file, burned the disc, then put it back in the drive and launched WMP. The text came up as it should but I noticed some typos I made. So I corrected the CUE file and re-burned the CD. When I put the CD back in the drive, the old, original CD-Text came up - not the corrected version. I verified I corrected the text by putting the CD in my vehicle and in my home audio system. I can't seem to find where I can refresh the CD-Text read-in. Do you have any ideas?
Title: WMPCDText - CD-Text plug-in for Windows Media Player
Post by: Tim De Baets on 2011-01-12 16:25:08
It's actually WMP that keeps a cache of all the album info. This is mainly so that it doesn't have to look up each CD in the online database again, but as a side effect, the album info added by WMPCDText gets cached too.

Also, WMPCDText will automatically read the CD-Text of unknown CDs only. To make it read the CD-Text of a CD again, right-click on a track in Now Playing mode while the CD is playing, and select Read CD-Text.

To clear the album info cache for all CDs, go to WMP's Options - Privacy, and click Clear caches.

WOW.  This is one of those features that I've always thought WMP should have, but I never thought to look for a plug in that would achieve the same result.  I'm so glad that I stumbled across this thread, and after using it for a while, it's been working flawlessly for me.  I just wanted to say thanks for writing and sharing this with everyone. btw: I'm using  WMP 11 on XP sp2.

I wasn't sure if issues using WMPCDText were put by just replying to this post or not.  So, if this belongs somewhere else, sorry.

I've tried this plugin on 2 different computers and have gotten the same results.  When the plugin tries to automatically get CD Text for Track names, it returns garbage data for the Track name.  However, if I use the right click context menu to Read CD Text manually, the Track names then are read in with their proper CD Text.

The other thing I've come across is even when I uncheck the option to convert from uppercase to lowercase, some conversion still occurs.  For instance, in my CD Text test CD, I have the text CD Text Test Disc as part of some of the CD Text.  When the plugin reads the CD Text in, it returns Cd Text Test Disc instead of CD Text Test Disc.

No worries, you posted this in the correct place

First, which version of WMP and Windows are you using? Are you using the latest version of WMPCDText, 1.2?

Regarding the first issue, would it be possible to post a screen shot of the garbage track names? You can attach the screen shot to your reply. Also, do you get the same issue if you let CDex (http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/) read the CD-Text?

About your second issue, does the option stay unchecked in WMPCDText's settings? Even with the option checked, WMPCDText will only convert if the original text is in all caps. I suggest that you check if the CD-Text isn't in all caps after all, by also using CDex.

Good.

WMP 12.0.7601.175141 and the latest version of WMPCDText, 1.2.

Unfortunately, I now cannot get the issue to repeat.  I had had the problem where if I used Read CD Text, I'd get garbage, then the right text, then garbage text, alternately.  It was reproducable.  Now, I can't reproduce it.  It was a long string of apparently random text sometimes mixed in with part of the CD Text.  I can't post screenshot, but, I can post the file name from a rip that was being returned as I did copy and paste those into a post on a different forum.

It should be

01 CD Text Test Title Track 1- In The Navy.mp3

When I'd use the Read CD Text context menu option, I'd get

Cd Text Test Title Track 1- In The Navy.mp3.

It SHOULD be 01 CD Text Test Title Track 1- In The Navy.mp3 with both C and D capitalized in CD.

Let me see.  I've never heard of this app before.  I get the correct CD Text in CDex, even with the correct capitalization of CD.

I see, I misunderstood the nature of the function.  It only works on ALL caps text, not a mixture.  Actually, it does say that in the settings, doesn't it?
I just checked it DOES say that!  Sorry.

I'll do some more tests on my Windows 7 system, but I've never seen this issue on my own systems so I probably won't be able to reproduce it myself either. And without a way to reproduce, I'm afraid that it will be near impossible to debug this.

So am I right to assume that this is cleared up now? Note that WMPCDText will automatically read the CD-Text only once, after that the CD-Text is cached in WMP's database. However, you can still force it to read CD-Text again by using the Read CD-Text context menu option.

Well, it is returning "Cd Text" instead of "CD Text" at the start of the Track name.  If that's an issue or not.  I would think it is  because it's not returning the exact CD Text like Winamp does.

If the title has been actually written to the CD as "CD Text Test Disc", then that indeed sounds like an issue with WMPCDText.

Is the 'convert caps' option still unchecked in WMPCDText's settings?

Which program did you use to burn the CD?

In CDex, please open the CDDB menu and choose Read CD-Text to make sure that it's the actual CD-Text that you're seeing. What's the exact title that is shown there?

Convert caps option is still enabled right now.  I changed it back to being checked after one of the last replies.

The CD was created by, and the CD Text inserted by, ImgBurn.  (I'm a beta tester for that software.  )

CDex returns the Track name as "CD Text Test Performer Track: Village People / Cd Text Test Title Track 1: In The Navy"

Ah, ha!  Perhaps, I made a typo when typing in the text and that it really is "Cd Text Test" on the disc instead of "CD Text Test."  I will recreate the test disc and make sure I type it in correctly this time.

I MUST have made a typo before.  I recreated the disc making sure the necessary capitals were capitals.  CDex returned the CD Text I was expecting.

Aha, that explains a lot

Just to be sure, does WMPCDText also show the expected CD-Text now? (you may have to use the Read CD-Text context menu option again to force a re-read).

Yes, it shows the correct text.  I can't get the garbage text anymore, no matter how many times I use the context menu option.  My guess is it maybe returns this garbage text the first time the plugin is used?  Or the first time a disc is read?  I don't know.    I can't get a repeat of the junk text anymore, so, I can't test it anymore.

Yeah, it's weird as I got garbage text when I first tried the plugin on 2 computers.  A custom built one from 2009 and a new Dell XPS 8300 that I got last week.  As long as the plugin works with Read CD-Text context menu, that's all that matters, anyway.    Besides, neither of us can replicate a similar result, so, there's no way to test anything.

One thing I have noticed with the plugin installed.  Whenever I open video files, like AVI, WMP opens with a sub window opened for displaying the options for the WMPCDText plugin along with the window displaying the video.

Are you using the 64-bit version of Windows 7? If so, then this is probably a known bug in WMP that you're seeing. My Windows Media Player Plus! (http://bmproductions.fixnum.org/wmpplus/) plug-in already includes a fix for this bug, so I suggest that you try installing that. You can uninstall the plug-in again afterwards if you don't need it - the fix will stay on your system.

Minor enhancement I'd like to suggest: Ability to read Composer (or Songwriter, if Composer is blank). While WMP doesn't display Composer in the list pane, it can be accessed by right-clicking on a track and selecting Properties - Content when CD media information has been obtained from online database, or when playing an MP3 disc with ID3 tags.

I don't yet know if WMPCDText can read Genre because my burning software has no provision for adding that, but that's also desirable.
Title: WMPCDText - CD-Text plug-in for Windows Media Player
Post by: Tim De Baets on 2011-10-18 21:12:53
WMPCDText should already read Composer from CD-Text, doesn't it do that for you? It also reads Songwriter and tries to fill this into WMP's Writer field, but this probably fails because that field isn't available for CD tracks. Using Songwriter if Composer is blank is a decent suggestion, although they're technically a different thing.

WMPCDText should already read Genre correctly as well.

Burning software I'm using allows Comments, presumably equivalent to keyword MESSAGE described in Wikipedia article on CD Text. I just found that this plug-in allows such comments to be displayed as captions, if you set "Lyrics, Captions, and Subtitles" to "On if Available" (in WMP 11 under Play menu, which is only visible if you select View Classic Menus). Cool!

Hi, i have just now installed WMPCDText, but in my system seems to be that doesn't work.
The installer says that all is ok, but i can't see "Read Cd-Text" in any submenu of Media Player and in Media Player options i see that the plug-in is installed.

My system is Windows 7 Service Pack 1, and Windows Media Player 12.0.7601.17514.

Did you install the latest version of WMPCDText (1.2)?

The Read CD-Text menu item should appear when right-clicking a CD track in WMP's Play pane on the right. See this screenshot:

The menu item should also be available when right-clicking a CD track in WMP's Now Playing mode.

Yes, software is 1.2 version, and i can't see the text menu as the screenshot: it appear as normal, when WMPCDText is not installed, but in options say that is installed

The software needs some particular service to be running? I have disabled some services in autostart...

Please check if WMPCDText is loaded in WMP - it should be listed in WMP's Tools - Plug-ins menu, and should have a checkmark next to it (press Ctrl+M if you don't see the Tools menu).

Are you sure that you're right-clicking the track of an actual audio CD (and not, for example, the track of a data CD containing MP3 files)?

If you use Windows Explorer to go to WMP's Program Files folder (the same folder where wmplayer.exe is located), do you also see a wmp.dll file there?

The software needs some particular service to be running? I have disabled some services in autostart...

No, disabled services shouldn't be causing this problem.

Yes, i have WMPCDText loaded in Options > Plug-in and also in right click > Tools > Plug-in with checkmark enabled. Also in have the wmp.dll in "C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player". It's really strange, i have formatted just from one week my pc from Xp to Seven, and when i have XP in the past no problems with the plugin: it was working perfectly

Just one small thing: Media Player is in Italian, but i think this is not a problem...

gabrus's issue turned out to be a problem with non-English versions of WMP 12 after all: in those versions, the Read CD-Text menu item is never shown (my mistake for only testing in an English WMP 12). I am planning to release an updated version of WMPCDText in the coming months.

This is a maintenance release that fixes the Read CD-Text menu item not appearing in non-English versions of WMP 12. Also fixed is a crash when WMP 12 is opened with a very long command line. Updating is especially recommended if you're running Windows 7.

Well, a classic case of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" (American colloquialism). I had v1.2 installed and working fine in WMP 11 on a Windows XP SP3 system. Was bored and decided to upgrade to v1.3.

Uninstalled v1.2 (via Control Panel) and used downloaded v1.3 installer to try and install. It completed the install process successfully but when I clicked Finish with the Open WMP now option checked I got a firewall intrusion alert from Bitdefender Internet Security 2012. Alert said a Potential Malicious Process detected in my Local Settings/Temp folder had been blocked. This file had a .tmp extension. I chose Allow for this process.

Upon opening WMP 11 and looking under Tools/Plugins/Options/Background there was no entry at all whereas WMPCDText 1.2 showed before. I checked in CP/Add-Remove programs and it showed v1.3 as being installed. I also checked in the Programs folder and WMPCDText showed there.

I uninstalled v1.3 and attempted the install process again. Same result. Uninstalled v1.3 again, then disabled the BD IS 2012 firewall, enabled Windows Firewall and tried the install again. Same result.

This appears to be being caused by a tmp file that is created during the v1.3 installation process that BD firewall is treating as a Potential Malicious Process but I can't figure out why this would happen after I disabled the BD firewall.

Any suggestions on a way to get v1.3 installed and working in WMP 11?

Did you download WMPCDText from the official homepage (http://bmproductions.fixnum.org/wmpcdtext/)? With Programs folder, do you mean Program Files?

That .tmp file is actually the installer itself. This is just the way the development tool that I use to create installers, Inno Setup, works. Since the same tool is used for millions of other programs, I'm very surprised to hear that it's only the installer of WMPCDText that gets blocked.

BitDefender might be detecting a virus in the installer but it definitely doesn't do so for the official one, according to the VirusTotal results here (https://www.virustotal.com/file/2597257b9b3d5a5098c1d97211ec29461b5435bf091c2f1402330e7a45331c47/analysis/1344776820/). All other antivirus software doesn't detect anything either. If you let VirusTotal scan the installer that you downloaded, does it come out clean as well?

You can also register the WMPCDText plug-in manually by executing the following command (through Start - Run):

Code: [Select]
regsvr32 "%ProgramFiles%\WMPCDText\WMPCDText.dll"

Thanks for the reply. Yes, installer downloaded from indicated website. Installer scanned with BD context scanner prior to attempting install.

I have tried the installation again and prior to installing I completely disabled BD Firewall and Anti-virus. Still have the same problem. I also received an alert from BD when attempting to uninstall WMPCDText prior to this attempt. By selecting Allow for the process I was able to do the uninstall. See screenshot below.

Here is another screenshot showing the BD alert info for the installer.

I will try the manual registration but would like to confirm the code you supplied. Should there be a space between Program and Files? Here is the directory path as it exists on my system:
C:\Program Files\WMPCDText

Thanks again for the help. Really wish I had left the working v1.2 as it was. There was really no need to update as I don't think the fixes in v1.3 were relative to WMP 11.

OK, I found the culprit! BD IS 2012 has a firewall setting that was causing the problem. It is called IDS and was producing the false positive. I disabled that and the install went fine. Just another complication from a vendor trying to over protect a system. Hope this helps anyone else with this problem if they are using BD.

Wondering if you have seen this one.  I am unable to get the right click context menu and the cdtext is not being displayed.

I do see the plugin enabled in tools and can get to the properties of wmpcdtext.  I also see the registry entry "computer\hkey_classes_root\wmpcdtext.TWMPCDText" and the clsid child

I am running Win 7 Ultimate (64 bit) and WMP ver 12.0.7601.17514 and WMPCDText 1.4

Are you sure that the plug-in is loaded? The WMPCDText item in the Tools menu should have a checkmark next to it. Did the plug-in work previously?

Are you right-clicking on a CD track in WMP's List Pane (the pane on the right)? This is when the Read CD-Text command should show up. Have you tried other audio CDs?

Today is a different day. After restarting, WMP 12 now reads the CD-Text when the plugin option is set to automatically read CD-Text. Right clicking, with the plugin not checked or checked seems to give the same context menu of "Play all, Play, Edit, Find album info, and Properties" (can't attach but I do have an image showing the context menu).

With auto set on and the plugin checked it does read the CD-Text.  I still get the same context menu as before.

TIA
Chuck

Thanks for sending me a screen shot through PM. I see that you aren't right-clicking in the List Pane but in the Library Pane. The Read CD-Text command only shows up in the List Pane. If the List Pane isn't visible you first need to click Play at the top of WMP's window.

To make things clearer, I have included a screen shot:

Ok, So When You Do Another Update, 1 Thing To Do Is Make The Track Time Change With The Song, I Use Windows Media Center To Play My Cds, Which Uses Wmp To As The Player, Thats Great, Only Thing Is If The Song Doesn't Have A Composer,It Wont Display Track Time Correctly, Meaning That Instead Of The Current Time Of the Track, It'll Show The Time Of A Previous Track That Had The Composer. So If I Want To See The Time I Have To Go And Select View Track List, Then Go Back To Now Playing,Cant Figure How To Insert The Images With out A Url, So If I Can, May I Email You the Images?

It sounds like you have encountered a (previously unknown) bug in WMP. Do both WMP and Media Center display the incorrect track time?

And yes, if you have screen shots then please post them. You can upload them to an image sharing website like Imgur (http://imgur.com/) and include the URLs in your post. That way, other people on this forum will be able to see them too.

Thank you for uploading the screen shots. I have tried this myself and I can indeed reproduce the issue on my Windows 7 system. What's more, Media Center never seems to update the track time, even without any composer set: after advancing to the next track, the time of the previous track is still displayed.

This issue also occurred with WMPCDText completely disabled so I'm pretty sure that this is a bug in Media Center. I will report this in the Windows Entertainment and Connected Home forums (http://experts.windows.com/frms/windows_entertainment_and_connected_home/f/114.aspx) but I'm afraid that there's nothing more that I can do about this.

This is a GREAT plugin; thanks for making it available!  I am using Windows Media Player 12.0.7601.17514 and WMPCDText 1.4.

I am also using CDBurnerXP to create CD's from some old audio cassettes and burning my own CD's.  While the track information appears in WMP, the album information from my CUE sheet does not.  (This information does display in VLC Media Player.)  I would like to request this as a future feature for WMPCDText.  Thanks!

Examples of my CUE sheet and related screen shots are at:

If the album name and artist have been written correctly to the CD, then these should appear in WMP. Have you tried letting WMPCDText re-read the CD-Text? Or does restarting WMP help?

If you use CDex (http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/) to read the CD-Text, does that show the album name and artist?

It seems that CDBurnerXP isn't capable of writing genre to CD-Text. The only way I know of to do this, is to use CDRDAO (http://cdrdao.sourceforge.net/) and a self-written TOC file.

Restarting WMP does not help, and I am not able to see the "Read CD-Text" option on the context menu when  right-click on a CD                  track in WMP's Now Playing mode while my CD is                  playing.  I am using Windows Media Player 12.0.7601.17514 with Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 and WMPCDText 1.4.  (I also tried this on my work computer with a slightly older build of WMP 12 with Windows 7 Professional (no SP) and WMPCDText 1.4).

I will check out these other programs; thanks for the tips!

Please check if WMPCDText is loaded in WMP - it should be listed in WMP's Tools - Plug-ins menu, and should have a checkmark next to it (press Ctrl+M if you don't see the Tools menu).

Also, are you sure that it's an actual audio CD (and not, for example, a data CD containing MP3 files)?

Are you using the English version of WMP on both computers, or is it in another language?

Yes, it is checmarked on the Plug-ins menu.

Yes, it is a CD I burned from WAV files.

I have the English version of WMP on both computers.  The work version is 12.0.7600.16667.  (I will check Windows Updates from home tonight when I'm not behind a company firewall.)

In that case, the missing "Read CD-Text" option looks like a bug in WMPCDText. I can't reproduce it on any of my systems, so is it OK if I send you a special debug version of WMPCDText for you to try? If so, I'll PM you the download link and instructions tomorrow. Or if you prefer e-mail, PM me your e-mail address first. Thanks!

Sorry for your trouble, no need for a debug version.  When the CD triggers WMP via Auto-Play, it is a minimal window with a generic background and no track listing.  I discovered that right-clicking on the background gives a list of options, including "Show List" at the very top.  When I select that, my track listing appears.  From there I am able to see the "Read CD-Text" option for WMPCDText, as advertised.  Thanks for your concern and your quick replies; keep up the good work!

Okay, no problem  The minimal window you're referring to is called the Now Playing mode. For what it's worth, you should also get the Read CD-Text option in Library mode when right-clicking a CD track in the Play pane (on the right).

Now, does re-reading the CD-Text help to get the album name and artist to appear?

I don't see that option when in Library mode with the CD selected in the left pane and right-clicking a CD track in the Play pane.

In Now Playing mode, yes, re-reading the CD gets the album name and artist for me.  I edited both, as well as a track name, and re-reading refreshed everything as I expected.

I don't see that option when in Library mode with the CD selected in the left pane and right-clicking a CD track in the Play pane.

Just to be sure, are you really right-clicking in the Play pane (and not in the centered Library pane)? See this screen shot:

If the Read CD-Text option doesn't appear there, then this is a bug in WMPCDText. But I won't be able to fix it because I can't reproduce it myself.

Once again, a picture is worth a thousand words.  My WMP always defaulted to the Sync pane, not the Play pane, so I never saw a track list on the right side of the screen.  Thanks for all of your help, patience and advice.

(Apologies for not replying sooner, I only noticed your post just now.)

WMPCDText only adds support for *reading* CD-Text - it's still not possible to burn a CD with CD-Text by using WMP. To make a CD with CD-Text, you will have to use another burning application, like Nero/Roxio software, or the freeware Burrrn (http://www.burrrn.net/?page_id=4).

and I'm at my wits' end here. I thought this particular error msg was fixed some time ago...? Anyway, is there any hope for me? I could SERIOUSLY use a plug-in like this, but only if it's gonna work.

Does the problem occur with a single CD, or with all CDs that you try? Are you sure that the affected CD/CDs do in fact contain CD-Text?

Also, can you please check if CDex (http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/) and Exact Audio Copy (http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/) are able to read CD-Text from the same CDs? Since WMPCDText uses roughly the same method as these two applications, that would be interesting info. Thanks!

It occurs with every audio cdr I've tried. They were all made with the sonic Audio application HP used to sell as an add-on to their desktop systems. I added the text by hand to every one.....then got BSOD'd and replaced the computer. No more cd text.
