I don't know what does cause this strange behavior, but it'd be nice if someone explain it to me  .

I'm just taking a shot in the dark here, but perhaps the padding on the metadata tags is different.  <captain obvious>With the two example sizes given, it looks like each one differ by about 101 bytes.</captain obvious>

Different tagging
foo_nero does it's own tagging.

This would also explain why my two files were same sized: I hadn't tagged them at all.

I haven't seen a 2.6.1.9 version of foo_nero yet. Guess I need to be more patient

i would never buy nero till they allow me to install only the parts i would use ... i have bought CoolEdit, and i don't wanna use nero's editor for example .... this is not that dificult

You're right about that - if you install only Nero Burning Rom v6.3.0.3 (package 1) you get the older AAC/M4A Encoder - You have to install Package2 (nerovision etc) to get the new one...

Until that point you have gotten :
- Nero
- Nero Express
- NeroVision Express
- Nero CoverEditor
- nero Toolkit
- Nero Virtual Drive
- Nero BackItUp!
- Nero Wave Editor
- Nero Recode
- AAC, MP3Pro Plugins

(Did i forget something?)

One good point for that huge bundle is the quite a low price (49,90 Eur) for future updates too (until nero 7.0.0.1 is out some fine day - then just upgrade!)

And ... CoolEdit (=Adobe Audition) is quite a pricefull for it's simple functionality!

Cheers for that one !

even if i think they should provide a standard (30?), pro (40?), and deluxe (50) nero bundles, i don't even mind paying 50, but i want to have option of installing what *I* want ... Audition is prety good indeed

kwanbis,

There is now a Cool Edit/Adobe Audition full version plug-in for MPEG 4 Audio. I bought the first copy as it just came out the other day. It is $29.00 U.S. and does unlimited encoding/decoding. Right now they only do straight .AAC MPEG 4 Audio files, but will soon be adding MP4 file container format support also.

For more info see the thread at:

Regards.

No need to update foo_nero for the new encoder I think.

You are absolutely right at this point - when a big company sells products for different needs, they should be selectable by customers - as in many cases they are - just look InterVideo (fe); all their apps and plugins are sold separately or bundled just like the CUSTOMER needs.

In Nero Bundle :
- One needs just to burn / convert !
- The other needs video editing and making DVD's, maybe recoding a 7GB DVD to one 4.3GB with still good quality.
- And someone only needs the audioplayers / convertors - maybe the audio-editor too.
(Or just takes backup of the system files wit Nero backItUp!)

So they are all different products - why making a 'must-pay' bundle of them all - even by losing functionality if all are not installed (as i mentioned the Nero Digital Audio HE-AAC-Encoder versioning case between Nero Main (6.3.0.3) & NeroVision Express 2 v2.1.0.8)!

One funny thing is that they sell the MPEG-2 Encoder / Decoder as separate (it's part of the full bundle) - i cannot imagine anyone else than a hacker to need that one to get a poor-keygenned version to make MPEG-files and DVD's?

But, money makes the world go round and many are still buying that whole bundle (as i have done) - but i feel a bit bad, because i only need about half of the whole stack!

P.S. Adobe Audition IS good (maybe best) SW for audio editing / mixing and does have many input / output format plugins and more are coming soon (having that one myself too upgraded from Cool Edit Pro 2)

If you use the transparent or extreme presets for AAC, is there any reason to upgrade for AAC quality from 2.6.1.1 to 2.6.1.9???

Yes, 2.6.1.9's ATH applies to all CBR/VBR modes.

Sorry for being ignorant, but what is ATH?

Wow!!!

Has anyone else seen the jump in files sizes using the same preset but moving from 2.6.1.1 to 2.6.1.9?????

I use the transparent setting (also named normal:high). Under this setting, file sizes ranged from 140-190 with an average of about 175 under 2.6.1.1. After upgrading, the same files now range from 170-220 with an average of about 195 - or almost the exact same size as LAME alt preset standard. Transparent setting was used in both cases.

Foobar was used as the front end. Itunes is where I am reading the bit rates from.

What happened to cause a 15% increase in file size??? Is this the ATH improvement?

Yes, I was curious about this myself. I was using the extreme preset for 2.6.1.1 and after installing the 2.6.1.9 I was pretty shocked to see the average bitrate climbing to about 240-250 on average. It seems that the 10-25 more kbps on are used in 2.6.1.9 than in 2.6.1.1, on average of course. Since I've upgraded to 2.6.1.9 I've started using the transparent profile instead of extreme.

My question would be is it supposed to be that way, or will it revert back to the previous bitrates on the next release? If I'm going to start doing a lot of encoding, I would like to keep it fairly consistent.

As would I. The new new upgrade presents a rather dramatic change in files size. I'm wondering if I should drop to one of the streaming settings?

I was just reading this thread, sorry if posting this here is at the wrong location, moderator could move it to foobar 3d party or whatever would be appropriate if that should be the case.

It's just that I haven't been able to use Case's foo_nero yet - and I use his compiles of almost everything else to great satisfaction - but my attempts at foo_nero, 3 or 4 attempts from, I think foobar 0.76 'till present beta, each time downloading foo_nero afresh from site incase of fresh compile, have failed miserably. Dropping foo_nero into "Components" and starting foobar2000 then CPU goes straight to 100%, whole system turns to sludge and I have to call up task manager (which now uses approximately 20 mins to open) and kill process "foobar2000.exe" in order to regain control over my machine.....

I have Athlon Thunderbird 1.2 GHz, 512 Mb RAM, XP sp1a, last months Nero demo version....

Anybody else had any trouble with foo_nero...?

Do you have all of the Nero dll's in the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\AudioPlugins directory?

Edit: I suppose this should be in the Foobar2000 forum.

Yes.
But I also have the lot of the ones from http://neroplugins.cd-rw.org/ same place... maybe that could have something to do with it... Hadn't thought of that 'till now...
