Title: may i know your favorite headphone?
Post by: francesco on 2018-01-13 08:19:31
Hi
could be a poll , but seeing how many headphones are out and seeing 2017 is gone,i guess it's more appropriate create a new topic

well may i know your favorite headphones ?
personally even i own exansive sennheiser headphones and my lovely grado SR325e , i found AKG K701 & AKG K 240 MK II really great headphone
I ended buying the AKG K701 and even they really cost less then my sennheiser and grado , i love their sound , i listen rock music and some classical music

well may i know which are your favorite headphones ? and what do you think about AKG headphone?

last thing testing my headphones i play audio in flac , i wanted to encode in mp3 and opus, outside ears to play on my smartphone , i  have seen in this forum almost all the users use the frequency analysis , why? is the only tool?

well it never late to say happy new year

Hi
may i ask you a question about Sennheiser 580, does Sennheiser replaced  with the HD 598?
and the Audio Technica ATh M50 with ATH-M50X , just because with the number i did always a big confusion
thanks

Senn HD650 for enjoyment, Sony MDR-V6 for recording/tracking/rough mixing. I can't abide my Grado/Alessandro phones any more, and my old pair of Beyer DT990 sound excessively sibilant to me these days.

I'm not sure about the 598, I thought that was in the 555-ish family, which are nice, but less to my taste.

The Sennheiser 580 was the predecessor to the 600. As I recall, they use essentially the same (mildly iterated) driver in essentially the same orientation. The 580 was less expensive, which explains why it was discontinued.

Not totally sure what the x means in the audio Technica world; I had assumed it just indicated the most recent version. A-T's claims about how comfortable their cans are for hours at a time are real exaggerations IME.

Sennheiser HD650 and HD800 here.  While HD800 is more expensive/advanced but HD650 still is more neutral and preferable for some genres as rock/metal.

I also tried HD 600 and strangely I love them not less than 650 and 800.  Its frequency response is how music should sound  as for my ears. I haven't buy them (yet?) because I already have 650/800.

I still have a pair of Sennheiser HD580's I've had for well over 20 years. I replaced them last year with the Sony Mdr-z7 last year and am very happy with the Sony's. Very comfortable with a nice feeling of quality and sound.

My favourites are without a doubt my Grado SR325 which I use with a portable JDS Labs C5D DAC/Amp.
Replaced the large plug with an Oyaide 3.5mm & use them with larger aftermarket foam pads.
Play FLAC through either Foobar or my iPhone 7+ through the JDS Labs C5D DAC/Amp.
On the bike I use Jaybird X2's and am considering some 1MORE Triple Lightning IEM's.
Because I find Jaybird so good I'm looking forward to lossless Bluetooth 5 IEM's but currently nobody has any.
Love a pair of HD800 or HD820's (that people gushed about at CES 2018) but for the AUD$150 I bought my SR325's for they're hard to beat and just so cool (started on SR60, SR80, SR225 before)
I NEARLY bought PS1000 or PS500 but luckily I saw these 325's which seems like better made PS500's anyway.
Like the idea of Lightning headphones which come with a decent Sabre DAC but currently nobody offers anything compelling other than those Lightning Triples.
I would suggest shunning lossy audio full stop, run a high capacity smartphone & forget compression altogether.
I approve of general Sennheiser popularity here :) HD600's are such great classics and those affordable Massdrop ones seem cool.
This may be naive but I'd love it if Apple pioneered a worthwhile new HD audio format & we see music mastered to higher standards than the antique 16/44 we're mostly stuck with.
Being 50 I've fond memories of TDK MAR90 Cassettes and the digital CD audio "revolution" and all the way through I felt 16/44 is a backward step from the analog vinyl audio we enjoyed from Rega Planar 3 and Linn Sondek LP12 back in the day.
Surely recording was not perfected 36 years ago in 1982?
There must be a better way & I say bring it.

All the best to my fellow audio enthusiasts..!!

Head size and shape is variable, but I've had a few Sennheisers over the years and they were all extremely comfortable for me. They also sounded pretty good, apart from my last pair (HD515), which were merely okay. Something about them always seemed a little underwhelming.

I am currently favouring the Musical Fidelity MF-100. It sounds good to me, but it is just a little bit tighter on my head than I'd like.

Ever since Sony introduced their Street Style/behind-the-neck headphones (I think this was 2000), I've only used those. They're cheap (MDR‑G45LP around $15), light and you can wear them with a bicycle helmet. I just wish the cord was on the right side. I cannot speak for quality because that's all I've used.

Denon D7000, by far. Not only are they detailed and reveal differences between, say 320 kbps MP3 and FLAC, quite easily, they are extremely musical and pleasing to the ear. When used with proper equipment (not a phone or integrated sound card), the sound is big, warm, engaging and cohesive. I use them with a Abrahamsen DAC and Vincent hybrid vacuum tube amplifier.

For listening on the go, I use Sennheiser Momentum 2. For this purpose, they are excellent phones, as they can be driven quite easily by an iPhone and the sound is still full and cohesive.

I also have Sennheiser HD650 and Beyerdynamic DT770 (80 ohm). They sound muddy and closed in comparison. As for Sennheiser HD800, they are extremely detailed and have a huge sound stage, but they sound thin, analytical and less engaging to my ears. To get any bass at all you have to play ridiculous high volume levels. They do not play music the way it's meant to be heard. They are however very useful as a tool to reveal differences in formats and bitrates.

Another member of the Sennheiser HD580 club here.

Have been for >10 years (having then bought them second hand)

The fact I could only be a**ed to replace its cable (twice!) with that of the HD-650's (for its sturdiness alone) along with the worn out state of its earcups and headband paddings, both tell me it's got at least 15 years under its belt - but boy, do they still sound great for music and films in general!

I recently switched to HD 660 S. I have tried pretty much every better known headphone out there and the sonic improvements get fairly insignificant above this point if you add some minor EQ adjustments. I would love to get a Focal Clear, though, which impressed me a lot with its accurate tonality. If I ever start feeling old and retire in a comfy music chair, I might invest in a Stax SR-009 (S). The Hifiman HE-560 is another good open headphone, which I probably prefer over the warm Audezes. Can't complain much about the MX4, other than the price. Fostex T50RP Mk3 is a good budget recommendation, IMO.

For closed, I still use an Oppo PM-3. If it weren't for PM3's superb build, comfort, isolation and portability, I would have upgraded to the MrSpeakers Æon Flow Closed. I'll get my hands on the HD 820 next month, but based on the forward treble of the open HD 800, I am still a bit reserved until I have actually spent some time with them.

For very critical listening, I usually grab IEMs. My favorite pick is the InEar ProPhile 8, which perhaps has the best tonal accuracy of any IEM from 20 Hz to 10 kHz. I mix it up with some CIEMs, including the qdc Gemini, but most of them are more fun-sounding. Doesn't have to be that expensive, though. The Etymotic ER4XR is a safe bet. I also like to recommend the Final E2000 and Sony MH1 which perform incredibly well for their low price.

I'm still using my HD 580s after more than 10 years, and have replaced all the pads exactly once, and the cables several times. They're plugged into my Blue Yeti microphone, and I keep forgetting to turn off the microphone monitoring.

Sennheiser HD650 (the HD600 are also good, no idea if they still sell them): I like using them around the house, etc.
Beyerdynamic DT 1350: Split head band, they're very comfortable at work, they don't fall off when you look up, etc.
Beyerdynamic DT 290 MK II: Headset. Just a good headset with a microphone.

My favorite is a tie between my Sennheiser HD 280 Pro's and my BeyerDynamic DT 770 Pro's. Both are excellent but the Senn's have a little more bass "punch". I think the Beyer's are more accurate, while the Senn's are more fun. If that makes any sense.  ;)

There are a lot of full-sized and IEM headphones I haven't tried, so my opinion is pretty worthless. My main headphones have been Beyerdynamic DT 880s for over 5 years or so now, and I've replaced the ear pads and head band already. I researched a lot of different kinds before I chose these and they won me over because of reviews/comments about head comfort. I have a huge cranium and am sensitive to pressures, so comfort was important. They've been great.

I recently splurged on Massdrop's HD-6XX which is basically Sennheiser HD-650. I've used them for over a month now and am convinced I made the right choice (for the Beyers) as far as comfort. I don't like the pressure around my ears or on the top of my head. They sound nice though, with a bit more "spaciousness" unless I'm imagining things. Still, not sure whether it's better or just different.

Philips Fidelio X2.
They combine the advantages of open headphones (which show up best with Grado cans IMO) with the ability to produce deep bass (missing with Grado cans).

Sennheiser HD-600, mostly used for mastering or mixing. 13 years old, have replaced the cushions 5 times, headband cushion just a few weeks ago. Exchanged the cable to the one from HD-650, much more sturdy. Over the years, I've learned to live with its few flaws. Always dependable.

For enjoyment: Philips Fidelio M1. Really not the best headphone (very sounded) but so damn comfy, love that. I linearize its sound with an EQ. Also use the Sennheiser Urbanite. Less comfy than the Philips but more sensitive (good for smartphone). More linear but needs to be equalized as well.

If I want something closer to my HD-600 (with louder frequencies below 80 Hz) I use the HD-380 Pro.

Used to listen to the HD-558... but I found it sounded too coloured after initially liking it a lot. Same goes for the ATH-M50x, would be a great headphone if not for the treble peak somewhere around 9 kHz which I can't correct and which makes the sound hissy. Also, comfort not the best. Still haven't got around to sell those two.

Beyerdynamic DT 1350: Split head band, they're very comfortable at work, they don't fall off when you look up, etc.
Underrated on-ears. Very good linear bass and fairly neutral midrange. For the price they perform quite well.
I have a pair for many years and used them to travel through China for a year. They had to take quite a beating but still hold up well.

Previously I wrote

:)
Finally I got a pair of HD600 and they are my main pairs right now. I prefer them over my other phones HD650 and HD800.
HD650 has slightly recessed high frequencies (I guess it was done to keep THD lower than of HD600).
HD800 is a mixed bag. THD is considerably lower but they are far too colored to call them reference headphone and they have “V" shape frequency response. And drivers are positioned in angle what activates some sort of "hall" EQ. That's great but often I need just simpler and neutral presentation of sound. ::)

As far as I know there were 3 generations of HD600. Last generation of HD600 is practically HD650 but obviously with different frequency response (signature).  https://www.innerfidelity.com/content/very-important-sennheiser-hd-580-hd-600-and-hd-650-page-2
I was worried about THD of HD600 and HD650 but in practice both have the same audible distortion. HD600 is a true reference headphone in comparison with HD650 and HD800 (though HD650 is very close to be it as well).

Philips Fidelio X2.
They combine the advantages of open headphones (which show up best with Grado cans IMO) with the ability to produce deep bass (missing with Grado cans).
Innerfidelity says Philips Fidelio X2 competes very well with HD600 in the same price range.

Beyerdynamic DT880s are my best pair! But in some mood I just find them to dry.
In that case, I’ll just use my Sennheiser HD600s that never fail me.
I also use my AKG/Massdrop K7XX for movies and general web browsing (they disappear on your head).
I also use ATH M40X and Beyer DT770 Pro on-the-go, although lately I find the latter (770s) too sibilant that I have to EQ them.

I no longer use my Alessandro MS1i and MS Pro headphones - they are just too ..

HA folks are special and I was curious to know local preference for different headphones.

I've counted owners (who have posted in this topic) per each headphone model:

Sennheiser HD650 – 7 owners
Sennheiser HD600 – 6 owners
Sennheiser HD580 – 4 owners
Beyerdynamic  DT770 – 4 owners
Sennheiser HD800 – 3 or 4 owners (it’s not clear from posts)
Beyerdynamic  DT880 – 3 owners

...memorable mentions (2 votes)  are Grado SR325e, AKG K701, AKG K7XX and AKG K702.

I built up my collection about ten to fifteen years ago and everything I have tried new since then at any price it hasn't given me much to choose from what I already have. I am not at all convinced the technology has progressed.

Sony MDR-V6
Sennheiser HD 580
Beyer DT880
Grado SR60
Grado SR80i
And a bit of an obscurity: Sony MDR-CD780s (definitely a case of function over form factor)

I'd be happy to grab any of them right this second to listen to.

Now that I think of it I'll add one more--My family got me a pair of Bose bluetooth headphones and I must say I was very surprised that they hold their own. I can't remember the exact model.

Well, it was just one time I've counted to get a big picture of local preferements. It's not big deal to recount maybe few months later :)
Anyway, have You sold your HD600? I'm not sure if it's correct to deduct HD600 once you still have or had it at some moment.
Thank you for  mentioning that.

Maybe Hydrogenaudio should have its own wall of fame like this one  https://www.innerfidelity.com/content/innerfidelitys-wall-fame-over-ear-open :)

Just for the record. Do You own / have owned HD800 or You've described your casual expirience with them?
As far as i understand our ears can get used to some unbalanced (thin, analytical...) headphones after some prolonged time. Anyway I don't disagree with your description of 800s.

A kind and generous person stole my Sony MDR-Z7's. Looking at replacements I'd have been happy with another pair of Z7's but the UK distributor of Beyerdynamic was selling "B" stock 2 gen T5P's on EBay for £399. I liked the T5P (I have friends who used them so was familiar with the model) but the UK SRP is more than I'd be willing to spend on a pair of headphones. However at £399 it was worth a go so I went for it, despite being called "B" stock the item was unopened and new and I suspect that the distributor has over stocked and are marketing these as "B" stock to avoid devaluing shop stock by advertising it as a 50% discount on regular new stock. I'm delighted with them, and they can easily be driven to a sensible volume directly from my smartphone and tablet and sound terrific without needing a separate headphone amp or DAC. For any other British users of this forum who have had an interest in these headphones but baulked at the cost they should check this opportunity out.

AKG K612. It share a basic sound signature with Beyerdynamic DT880 250Ohm and Sennheiser HD600, costing around half as much. The build quality is nice, the design is serious and timeless. The sound is clear and juicy, I can listen all day to difficult instruments like violin, cymbals, trumpet without ear fatigue. Out of the box it handles classic rock and orchestral music well, conveying a lot of spatial imaging. With some EQ (https://www.dropbox.com/sh/654wxtmhlq0dhqa/AAAKT-RIbEKpsl-JW7mOnu_9a?dl=0&lst=&preview=AKG+K612.pdf) it comes alive on dance genres, easily surpassing good closed headphones like Audio Technica ATH-M50X. The downside is that they require a powerful headphone amp to be driven loudly enough.

All of my headphones sound great now that I've got MiniDSP's headphone amp plus headphone measurement device! Using Room EQ Wizard and the calibration files supplied by MiniDSP, I was able to bring all of their frequency responses fairly close to the target respons  proposed by Sean Olive / Harman Int'l, with my modified (stock ear pads replaced with ones by Shure) Fostex T50RP IIs coming very close indeed.

(BTW, it turns out there's no magic involved with the ear pad tweak: The Shure pads are deeper and form a better seal, that's all)

An imitation of human head with linear/calibrated microphones inside "ears"? How expensive is it to get such a thing?

I own and use JBL E55BT which are probably on the cheaper end of the scale. But anyway, they work and sound good enough for my train rides and I just don't want to hear anything. Maybe when they see their end of life I will have the budget for better ones. But who knows?

Got myself a pair of wireless cans yesterday. Sennheiser Momentum 2 Wireless.

At first listen I thought, wow, what a difference compared to my AKG K551 wired ones. The sound was... not natural, nor crisp. And the fit was not comfortable, it screeches the ears. Noise cancelling was good. But in total I was not blown away. It was ment to replace my office head phones, a cheap pair Tao Tronics TT-BH040, but I can't live with them, Not after reading all the overwhelming top reviews all over the web.

So. Today I returned them. Too bad, but it was the best thing to do. I got an idea. Since I love my K551 I found a demo pair of K550 Mk III for a great price. Will put a bluetooth module on them and a short jumper cable. Then I have my own custom wireless head phones for office. Will be great I think.

Summary. I love my AKG's, will soon have my third pair. K5xx is really great bang for the buck.

I use Audio Technica ATH M50X (for listening purpose only). I'm happy with it.

Sony MDR V6, and Grado SR225e, are probably still affordable for most. But play any good headphone through a Mesa Boogie Tigris amplifier and you are in for a treat.

Mesa Boogie Tigris
I think I can detect the odour of a troll...
Considering that Mesa Boogie try to follow up their Baron amplifier - which had the reputation of rather being an "instrument" (read: add the guitar amp distortion you think the guitarist should have done) - then I would not be surprised if they made another thing with, ahem, audibly nonzero measurements.
