Movie Effects

Hi,

How can I apply the following type of effects to a home made movie which is currently on dvd:

fading, captions, picture in picture, background music?

Thanks

simplest way would be to use some video editing software (adobe premiere, liquid edition, sony vegas, ect), for most of them you will have to transcode the dvd to some other format prior to editing thought..., there are some mpeg2 enabled editors out there as well, like videoredo, but i have never tested those.

free way would be to use avisynth - but that takes quite some experimenting and it is generally pain in the b** for such subjectively-visual tasks.

It does seem a pain the free way.  Might have to invest in some quality software...
