Quick Tagger now suddenly unable to assign ratings

I used Quick Tagger for years with never a single problem in terms of assigning a star rating onto files. But recently it wont work on probably 50% or more of the files I try to rate. When I ask it to assign a rating I get
' Could not update tags (unsupported format or corrupted file) on: address/file '

And files it fails on are various from flac to DFF

I tried to open and resave flac files with Audacity and somehow the files it wont work on it continues not to work on - whereas those that work, continue to work fine.

'All' the files play fine with no errors

Failures were from one day to the next - not a gradual thing - so imagine it may be a Windows10 thing or an upgrade in Foobar
Using Foobar 1.4.4 and quick tagger 1.0.3

Could this be a prefs or cache thing - should I throw away some file?  Appreciate any suggestions

Can you tag the files using other means, like with the Properties dialog?

You should post a list of your components or try with a clean portable install where you have no other extra components added but the Quick Tagger.

I cannot see any field in properties where rating would apply - I took a file which accepts rating and applied a value and checked in that properties window in both tabs and still no sign of that value or anything related to rating

Thanks - I will try  access the folder and the specific files which wont rate with another installation of foobar on another computer later - should be interesting

I did more or less what you suggested - namely to take a RAW installation of foobar (this was version 1.3.1.7) and installed quick tagger and nothing else non standard  and I configured it and playlist listing so I could see a column of tag ratings .

This was on another machine sharing the same folder via the network.

The tagging worked from the remote computer and indeed any new tags appeared live on the display of the main version of foobar

I then updated Foobar to 1.4.4 and it also worked

So it is something either to do with updates on other clashing components - or perhaps windows.

Nothing was reconfigured either with foobar or with anything on the computer  around the time that this started happening although I do update components and windows itself. Windows 10 has been drastically slimmed down for playback quality (every unnecessary service turned off etc ) and process lasso used to make everything on the computer low priority and run on different cores to foobar (which has one core exclusive to it and runs in realtime priority).  The foobar which was tagging properly is just plain vanilla windows and they are both up to date.

That said - nothing reconfigured on windows since this thing started. I have done file system checks and that found nothing - and changing tags from another foobar on another computer one would expect could have eliminated that.

The tagging failures are file specific not condition specific - and that occurs whether the file is playing or not - so dont think demoted process priorities have caused that.

thanks again for further things to check

Finally got to the bottom of this issue - at least on one hard drive - Windows Defender offers protection against ransomware and you can designate specific 'protected folders'. If you do choose to protect your music folder you will not be able to change ratings from inside a locally running Foobar. Nor will you be able to save a 'converted file' to that folder - it will say 'file not found'.  I found that I was able to save ratings for some files in the collection - I have not dug down to find out yet whether these files were on hard drives which were simply not listed in Defender for protection (since I thought I designated all the music folders) - or whether they are on drives which are somehow not affected by this protection. Best, at this stage I suppose to consider the idea that some drives behave differently  to others with this Defender ransomware thing.
