mp3 in VirtualDub

When I use VirtualDub to compress an AVI and the audio stream, I can see the compression available up to 56 kBit/s, 24.000 Hz Stereo, so only up to 7 KB/s!!!
Why? Is there any mp3 codec I have to download specifically for VirtualDub? I generally use mp3 for to rip my cds but that is for audio only. I mean it is an exe file (or I use dll method)...
I'm sure that some time ago I had a wider choice of bitrate. Does anybody know the reason?

what vdub see is the system codecs, i belive mp3 encoding is limited to 56 kbits in the original ms codec. better use 'encode audio with a separate app (lame.exe will do just fine) and mux them later' process.

But how can I make vdub see up to higher kbit? I need to compress to my avi to 128 kbits. I do remember that once I had (and it worked good!) the tab that showed me the encoding at up to 320 kbits!
