Title: RIAA EQ comparation between Audacity EQ (FIR) w/ RIAA preset and 2nd o
Post by: Juha on 2009-08-26 10:39:31
Audacity 1.2.6

Normalization and Amplification done using Audacity features.

24-bit/48kHz (wma) samples:

1 - no RIAA - [attachment=5340:1.wma]
2 - Audacity EQ w/ RIAA preset - [attachment=5341:2.wma]
3 - Audacity EQ w/ RIAA preset + Normalization (< -3.0 dB) - [attachment=5342:3.wma]
4 - Audacity EQ w/ RIAA preset + Amplifying (< -0.0 dB) - [attachment=5343:4.wma]
5 - IIR filter (< -1.0 dB) - [attachment=5344:5.wma]
6 - IIR filter (< -3.0 dB) - [attachment=5345:6.wma]

Examples/instructions to make IIR type RIAA EQ implementation can be found @ http://jiiteepee.fortunecity.com/riaafilter/index.html (http://jiiteepee.fortunecity.com/riaafilter/index.html)

Meanwhile, 3 years later, in a galaxy far, far away:

The Audacity samples sound wrong to me - too much treble and not enough bass.  I have done some experiments of my own which support this.  Maybe this is fixed in Audacity 2.x

How did you calculate your IIR filter parameters please?

I have not been here for long so haven't seen this query.

IIR filter coefficients came from Robert Orban http://www.dsprelated.com/showmessage/73300/3.php (http://www.dsprelated.com/showmessage/73300/3.php) and Scott Wurcer.

My new RIAA pages are here - http://jiiteepee.tripod.com/riaa.html (http://jiiteepee.tripod.com/riaa.html)

Yes, they have improved the preset in 2.x.

Here are new files for my comparison (All recorded using ESI DuaFire and 24/44.1 (files 1-3 through fixed flat phono input, 4 through line input)):

Here's the final comparison:

Steep HP @20Hz was used for all 4 samples.

Additionally one file for comparisons, which is done using convolution w/ RIAA impulse response data (source file is the same as for the others).

Forgot to link the IR file(s) (http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/digital-line-level/268276-what-about-digital-riaa-8.html#post4195482) used in that sample file #05-05
