Highlights

New Default User Interface

The new Default User Interface allows complex layout using building blocks that are called UI Elements.  The Default User Interface puts a focus on instant usability and easy configuration; it deliberately does not offer total visual customization and reduces the use of title formatting. The Quick Appearance Setup window lets users choose from a set of predefined layouts, color schemes, and playlist configurations. The layout editing mode and scratchboxes allow in-place configuration of the layout with Copy & Paste functionality. The current configuration can be exported as a theme for archiving or transfer to another foobar2000 installation.

The following UI Elements are included by default:Containers

Containers provide the ability to structure the main window layout. Splitters arrange two elements horizontally or vertically. Tabs allow switching between multiple elements. The Playlist Tabs element displays a tab for each playlist and hosts a single element which is normally a playlist view. The Toolbar Header element allows to position a toolbar area above or below another element.

Quick Appearance Setup

The Quick Appearance Setup window can be opened from the main menu (View > Layout > Quick Setup) or from the Default User Interface preferences page (Quick Setup button in the Theme Management section).

Spectrum (UI Element)

The Spectrum element displays a spectrogram visualisation. By default it uses global theme colors, but it can also be configured to use custom colors.

Toolbar Header (UI Element)

The Toolbar Header element is a container that hosts a single element and displays a toolbar area with one or more toolbars above or below it.

(http://foobar2000.org/releasenotes-095/images/toolbar_header.th.png) (http://foobar2000.org/releasenotes-095/images/toolbar_header.png)

File Operations (Component)

The File Operations component is used to rename, copy and move files according to specified schemes. Those schemes can be saved as presets and are accessible from the context menu. This component replaces the corresponding features of the deprecated Masstagger component.

Improved File Properties Dialog

The improved Properties Dialog now integrates tagging-features which previously were part of the Masstagger.

For a full overview of what's new, see the release notes page (http://foobar2000.org/releasenotes-095/releasenotes.html).

Upgrade from previous versions

These upgrade notes extend the general upgrade notes from the FAQ (http://www.foobar2000.org/FAQ.html).

You can install foobar2000 0.9.5 on top of an existing foobar2000 0.9.x installation.

Component compatibility

foobar2000 0.9.5 is compatible with most components made for older 0.9.x versions of foobar2000 with the following exceptions:Updated versions of foo_pqview and foo_utils are available from here (http://foosion.foobar2000.org/0.9.5/).

Configuration, media library, and playlists

The media library and existing playlists are unaffected by upgrading to 0.9.5. The configuration should be unaffected except for Default User Interface settings and certain keyboard shortcuts.

Default User Interface and Title Formatting

The title formatting strings previously located on the Display > Title Formatting can now be found on the Advanced preferences page in the Display / Legacy title formatting settings branch. These strings are no longer used by the new Default User Interface.

Keyboard shortcuts

In order to minimize potential interference with typing in the new Default User Interface, existing single-letter shortcuts without Alt or Control modifier keys are removed on the first run after installing 0.9.5. Manually re-adding these shortcuts, while possible, is not recommended due to the issues stated above.

Requires XP or newer.

Looks like I need to wait until this evening to check on my laptop.

Sounds interesting though.

Wow, this is awesome.

As much as I've loved PanelsUI, I'd gladly switch to an interface that focuses on usability and reliability.

This is just what foobar needs. Thanks for listening to your user base for this one.

This new standard interface enriched with built-in presets is really a great improvement! Now I get foobar2000 looks pleasant without any effort (I didn't followed any UI improvement since two years and I didn't have the time to understand this whole scripting & components system).

In my opinion this is the most important release since years... maybe the most important one ever.

Congrats, and thank you very much

This version is one of those Pringles moments; Once you pop, you can't stop. The usability is great (not that I had any problems with previous versions either) and all the new features in default UI are great.

Thanks Peter

Sure, it's a very small improvement. But they have a loooooooooong way to go if they wanna match up to panels or columns ui. The new ui looks far from elegant.

This is nice surprise to see a new beta, and wow! what a great beta it is!

I was never a big fan of columns/panels UI, but the disadvantages of those two are gone in 0.9.5. It works all so great together and now it's really easy to set up.

The scratchbox is great, too! I also like the Facets plugin.

Well done!

0.9.5 with flac 1.2.1 decoding library is now... 79,21% faster!!! While it has no importance on playback it significantly speeds up transcoding (from flac source). [EDIT: only one core is used with both fb2k version]

I also noticed that the number of encoding thread can be set (useful when transcoding from source located on optical media).

I think it's good enough for most users (including myself). I prefer easier to use user interfaces over comples ones, but I think here they actually found a good compromise between usability and the amount features.

The Facets plugin is a good showcase of what's possible now and how a more elegant UI element should be created.

BTW, you can still use the old panels/columns UI interface but I doubt its development will be continued, will it?

I also noticed that the number of encoding thread can be set (useful when transcoding from source located on optical media).

...or when having no real multi-cores...

Post by: alphaex32 on 2007-10-20 16:38:45
I feel like I'm missing something here, because none of the old UI elements are showing up in the "replace element" list for me. I only see the default ones, and Id like to use the browser, bookmarks, lyrics, etc. Also, nothing is showing up in the new albumart panel, and I cant figure out how to get to any kind of settings dialogue for it. I also don't see anything about the "scratchbox " or "facets plugin."

edit: Ok, I found the facets plugin, which is awesome btw. I still really miss the old UI components but I love this new layout system. No chance of backward compatibility?

I am sitting right now in an inet-cafe and has downloaded new beta and the brand new facet plugin - i know how i will spend the rest of my day. I expected many new things but not this: it seems to be amazing!

Thanks for your hard work!

One question just: is it a big work for developer of some panels (bookmarks, history, lyricshow, queuemanager...) to transfer their plugins?

Those components you have listed are panels for Columns UI, which is an entirely different user interface.

Panels were never part of the default UI.

From the footnote in the release notes:
Quote
UI Elements are conceptually similar to the panels introduced by Columns UI, but are incompatible with them so they were given a new name.

Wow, a new beginning. I'll need some time for that...
BTW, the fb2k default icon has some ugly white pixels at the corner here, wxp, 16 bit colors.

Is there a way to reset the default UI settings only? Would be helpful especially at the beginning...
EDIT: OK I found the quick setup window. Great work.

The layout import/export/cut/copy/scratchbox: Very fine!

Oh ok, I understand. I hope eveyone updates their components to work in the new UI. One more thing I was wondering, how can I create custom button bars? I dont see an option anywhere for it.

Sure, it's a very small improvement. But they have a loooooooooong way to go if they wanna match up to panels or columns ui. The new ui looks far from elegant.

0.9.5 does not try to compete with Columns UI or Panels UI as far as total visual customization is concerned. Also, some people consider it elegant when an application blends in with the rest of the crowd; it is largely a matter of taste.

Now, a question

Is there a way to lock album art to now playing song only?

It's follow cursor only right now. and i don't see any setting anywhere.

There is no such setting in the beta.

One more thing I was wondering, how can I create custom button bars? I dont see an option anywhere for it.

There is no option for that.

Is Peter still the largest contributer to development (or sole developer) of foobar2000?  Or is this release a work of other developers?

Any plans to include that someday? That would be the last element to let foobar look like a normal windows application, beside of the functionality to have quick access to often used commands (without going to main or context menu and without remebering hundreds of shortcuts)

Peter is still responsible for almost everything in the installer and for everything on the optional components page. As far as actual code goes, my contribution is limited to foo_freedb2 and some pieces of code used in foobar2000 itself (edit: all of those predate 0.9.5 by the way). The components on other pages (Frank's and mine, for example) are the work of their respective author. picmixer has made the new icons (the foobar2000 and file type icons). Then there is a bunch of people who did testing and helped with the release preparations.

As a general observation: people in this thread are too focussed on configuration rather than usage and doing stuff with foobar. A significant amount of minor features... and possibilities to combine new features - havent been discovered yet, because people are more concerned with configuration rather than usage.

Thnaks to the dev team for this great and unexpected version!! Lots of new features, it must have been a lot of work.

The new easily configurable UI is great and should attract new users. I was able to almost replicate my playlist tree config in a few clicks! Except for some custom queries so I hope it'll be possible to create custom "views" in the tree intead if the default one listed in the "view" combo

Well, all else I have left to say to everyone is, enjoy the beta. We are all very glad to see how well received it is by the users and hope you enjoy it as much as we have during the lengthy period of alpha testing.

When you say blend in I assume you mean that it looks like any other app for XP/Vista. The thing is that it barely does. Foobar truly has potential to be a great player with a simple yet appealing UI. I realize this is beta but here are some things that are bothering me. It's all about the details.

1. The progressbar and volume control are both oversized, as well as the splitters.
2. It would look a lot better if all elements had border style options (including splitters). The default borders look terrible.
3. Formating for album art? Like... albumart\[%album%].jpg. Would be nice with album art in the playlist as well, like in iTunes.
4. Autosizing of columns in playlist view / playlist manager / playlist search.
5. Would be nice if toolbar panels were separate from the toolbar container.

Keep up the good work.

Wow... new version!! And the new default interface gives Columns UI and Panels UI a run for their money by far! The new interface is an unexpected, wonderful treat for all foobar2000 users, especially for new to novice users who want to experiment with the interface w/o dealing with too much code. I would assume that more experienced users are having a blast with all of the tinkering. It's shocking that this is a beta, since it runs quite smoothly, no hitches. Probably a personal preference, but I wish that a lyrics panel will be added... or maybe it's there, but can't find it. Anyways, an amazing job by the people who make foobar!!!

I've split some posts about - I guess - different people's approach to using foobar2000. Please stay on topic and avoid being hostile to users who do not share your opinion.

Additional reminder: please post bug reports in separate threads.
Title: foobar2000 0.9.5 beta 9

While all feedback is appreciated, we would like to avoid the typical "beta thread syndrome" in the long run.

Threads with many pages can make it quite difficult to keep track of the numerous proposals and error reports. This would most likely cause concerns to be repeated, and might in the worst case even result in bugs remaining unfixed. That said, please try to stick to one topic when posting, instead of covering a broad range of completely different aspects. This will make it much easier to properly split posts into comprehensible separate threads, which we will continue to do if necessary.

Please do also consider to start a new topic, especially for bug reports, as mentioned by foosion.

Just include "0.9.5" somewhere in its title to catch our attention.

wow I usually lurk but this release is AMAZING
it might take a bit till the DefaultUI is as pretty as some of the Panels/ColumnsUI stuff (which i think most are pretty gaudy, cluttered, and not very ergonomic anyways) but this release is soo elegant, fast, and intuitive!! I already like my new 0.9.5 + facets component layout better than my old buggyass Panels UI config which I've been using for about a year!

Nice changes, setting up a nice usable UI is a lot simpler now. But it still needs some polishing, especially those oversized element borders are ugly as hell, an option to turn them off (better) or make them only 1px thick would be nice.  Also a setting for minimum/maximum size of UI elements/elements position locking would be useful, same as an option to disable albumart upscaling (looks ugly).

Activate the Layout Editing Mode (menu View, Layout), right-click on a splitter, that means on the frame between two elements, and choose between "Lock Left Pane Width" and "Lock Right Pane Width" (or top and bottom height, respectively).

Impressive work, folks, really. You've taken the one major hole I've seen in this program (a lack of an easy and effective out-of-the-box setup) and plugged it effectively, and with style.

It crashes in my Columns UI config, but that's probably due to the redundant components I've got installed. I haven't had a chance to play around with the new Default UI very much, and will probably not switch to it immediately, if at all (at least until/unless I can get the same or better functionality to the setup I have now) (so I'm still using 9.4.5 for the moment), but it's still a remarkable piece of work.

I do hope you folks won't completely throw customizability out the window; making it *unnecessary* (as it seems you have) is certainly the right way to go.

Hi foobar 0.9.5 is really good but i have some question

Is there a mean to add a panel to see artist image ?

Is there a mean to focus the album art panel only on the current playing song and not on the selected ?

Thanks by advance for your help

I appreciate all the work that the developer of ColumnsUI has put in, but realistically, the basic ColumnsUI functionality is something that always ought to have been in the default program.  Not to suggest the Foobar developers are wrong for not doing this sooner, or that the ColumnsUI developer was wasting his time.  The Foobar developers started with whats arguably more important, making sure it plays music efficiently.  Meanwhile, the development of ColumnsUI has been an excellent stop-gap while we waited.

At any rate, 0.9.5 beta 1 is precisely what I've always wanted Foobar to be.  All I need now is a UI element equivalent for the Show Lyrics Panel (the one that grabs lyrics from an on-line database).

I've been using foobar for quite some time with ColumnsUI set up.  The changes in this new beta version are a real improvements as well as a time saver.  Great works dev team!

@nbv4: do you have your wine set up to function as Windows XP, since this new beta requires XP and above?  run 'winecfg' if you're not sure.

yes it is. if I set it to Win2000 or something, it'll bring up a popup window saying "this only works in XP [OK]"

I would just like to say WOW, very please by the changes and additions in the new beta, seems like 9.4.5 only just went final and now we get a great new version to play with. I think one thing everyone in here is guilty of is loving new releases to find all the awesome work that Peter and Co have put into the music player... best ui designer - even my mum could make a custom design and this is the way it should be, not over the top programming language to learn and I think you for that. Out of the box Foobar is pretty much a complete package now, there are very few extra components one would need. I can start culling now to run a smaller footprint.. nice work once again

One small bug: Setting the interface transparent in the preferences dialog doesn't 'stick', ie. the window only remains transparent while the prefs dialog is open. Fresh install running on Vista with only 1 extra component, Facets.

Aside from that (and who needs transparency anyway) this release is absolutely incredible, foobar2000 now actually lives up to it's reputation as most configurable player - and the configuration can be done in a matter of seconds using only one hand (ie. the mouse).
Drag and drop support is awesome, building playlists is effortless and completely intuitive.

I love everything in the new UI EXCEPT
1. The Seekbar is kinda ugly with the white empty line inside, IMO doesn't feel native because all other windows apps have seekbars like the one in 0.9.4
2. The new icon, I think adding the gloss effect over the icon kinda ruined it...it was perfect before

Not a bug (and not new either I think). The transparency is only applied to the main window when it is not active.

I personally find it a bit harsh to dismiss Columns UI as a stop-gap. While it is true that Peter neglected the Default UI while he focused on the backend, there are features in Columns UI that he does not wish to include in 0.9.5 and possibly not even in later versions. Examples for this are extended formatting capabilities in the playlist view (tab and color rendering found in the status bar and in old versions) as well as configurable UI Element borders. We do hope that 0.9.5 and beyond will decrease the need and desire to switch to another user interface, but I don't think it will completely replace Columns UI.

I hope musicmusic is not too annoyed because we prepared all this in secret. It would be sad day for the community to lose a capable developer who has been creating good components for so long. So cheers to musicmusic: I hope you prove me right that Columns UI is more than a "stop-gap"! It is always good to have some competition.

There wll be now two standards for writing panel plugins: ui panels and ui elements. Will it be possible for a component to be both without having 2 versions of the DLL (which would be very messy) ?

I know you guys needed to do your work in secret but seriously I think everyone could of benefited if you guys worked with Musicmusic, I am not saying the work on default ui is making his component redundant but I think if you all worked together on one solution we would have something twice as good, so Musicmusic is just adding the finishing touches to the default rather then writing from scratch.

Either way everyone benefits with the latest version, I just hope musicmusic doesn't feel slapped in the face, the least you guys could of done is tell him early or something surely..?

I remember of some people criticizing Panels UI for his complexity but this interface is also complicated if we want to customize...

What about having a directory in components directory called "UI Element" ? Because there will be a lot of panels in some time and it will be complicated to find which components we have.
It looks like Album Art Viewer is very limited (1 preference in advanced option ?).
"Facets" is a very nice idea, but if we don't have a well-tagged database, it's not so powerful.

For panels developers, is it simple to allow UI Element compatibility ? Or do they have a "How To" ?

In any case, congratulations for such an improvement.

For those who do not use tags, there is a Folder Structure view.

If your folders are not properly organized either, I'm afraid there is not much you can demand from a library viewer.

My folders are well-organized, or at least I find them well-organized. With Folder Structure, you only see directories, and problem is... sometimes you have directories AND files.

The ideal is to have a well-tagged database, but I would need one year to be the case.

Just to make sure that there are no misconceptions. Musicmusic did certainly know how to get access to the alpha builds ever since the early 0.9  branch if he wanted to. He has access to one of the development channels if he chooses to and we certainly never actively tried to hide anything from him. We just happened to not be in contact for quite some time now.

As far as I know it was his choice to keep developing columns UI on his own. In no way I hold this against him since decisions like this are entirely up to the developers themselves. I do hold musicmusic in the dearest respect, since he has done a lot for this community and I have been an avid columns UI user myself before Peter started developing the new UI. We also by no means made the new UI to drive columns UI out, but simply started it because we felt there was the need for a new user friendly and easily configurable UI and never saw this as direct competition to columns UI.

Columns UI and the new default UI where developed independently simply because things took a turn that way and certainly not because of any hostilities, secrecies or anything the like.

I just want to make sure that this is clear before any rumors spread again that we actively try to drive away developers. It seems that some developers are a bit over sensitive to critisism (and by this I don't mean musicmusic by any means). Now if these developers decide to leave the fb2k community this certainly isn't our responsibility either and entirely their own decision.

We don't blame developers because of Terrestrial leaving. It's just that criticisms have sometimes been a bit rude (not always from moderators besides). When you have Foosion and some users who say Panels_UI is a bad written component, it's difficult to receive. Even if it's the case, you should choose the right words or explain it in PM.

But I don't want to be involved in controversy. I prefer to enjoy this new interface.

I am really happy that you all like this new version. I am very sorry to break the flow of positive comments but new playlist view is inaccessible. People using screen-reading solutions are not available to access playlist content with this new beta.
I believe this can be fixed as the playlist view is perhaps not entirely completed yet. I don't want to criticize the dev team I just would like to discuss accessibility issues properly. I have started a topic here (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=58366) so please look into it if you are interested in accessibility for visually impayred people.

Also what is the scratchbox for exactely ? Testing out some panels adjustments before cut+paste on the main window ?

Read what Frank has written about it in this thread (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=58322&view=findpost&p=523851).

It's for specifying a "placeholder" image for albums without cover art.

err:ntlm:SECUR32_initNTLMSP ntlm_auth was not found or is outdated. Make sure that ntlm_auth >= 3.0.25 is in your path.

ntlm_auth error can be fixed by upgrading your samba (ntlm_auth is a part of samba), but unfortunately this does not help to go further with installation (installer just hangs).

Eventually I installed it on WinXP box and copied foobar2000 dir to .wine/drive_c/Program Files/ and it works quite good (though you can simply crash it by pressing unassigned shortcut )

Very nice work!

Backwards compatibility with components seems VG; the only components I have "lost" are "panels", but that is to be expected with the new layout.

Lack of Customizable Track Info is my only major "sticking" point for completely leaving 0.9.4; but I am **sure** it is coming (wink, wink)

Does the new default layout allow for third party "panels" ---sorry, I know that term is attached to columns ui, but I hope you get the point? Need to get Lyrics and album art browsing back....

Random rocks!

Facets is very slick.

Now, to try to figure out what my autoplaylist queries were to import them into the filter...

Also, any trick to getting graphical ratings indicators into a playlist panel? None of my code works; currently stuck with 4 / 5 etc. EDIT
Code: [Select]
$if(%rating%,$get(info)$get(result)%rating% / $get(high)5,)
works (no color choices available ATM, as far as I can tell)

Keep up the good work.

Since the script coding madness of panels ui (no rant) foobar's gone wild for a while and possibly new-comers were distracted by the complexity, foobar's main dev now responding, reining complexness and creating a nice proportion of effective user configurability and complexity... - my gratulations!

I'm missing the ability to use different patterns for sorting and displaying in a playlist. For example, I want to sort rows by track gain. On the one hand, the unmodified string cannot be used for it because it is sorted like -10.00 < -10.50 < -9.00, so a conversion is necessary. On the other hand, the converted string cannot be used for display. This was possible in Columns UI.

1. Will this update be okay with my current configuration and database? I don't want anything lost, overwritten, or removed if I update. Normally I wouldn't ask, but this update seems fairly large.

2. I use Panels UI as my main interface. Does this new build of foobar add anything to that? Like, are there any new panels I can add into my config? I like the new playlist and the spectrum analyzer. Can those be added into a Panels UI interface?

I mainly want to make sure this update wont harm my current install.

Thank you .

0.9.5 should be compatible with most components. However since this is a beta this hasn't been tested thoroughly and there might be some incompatibiltity with certain components. However nothing should happen to your database.

In case of doubt simply install to a different folder and make a clean install of 0.9.5 and reinstall your needed components there.

2. I use Panels UI as my main interface. Does this new build of foobar add anything to that? Like, are there any new panels I can add into my config? I like the new playlist and the spectrum analyzer. Can those be added into a Panels UI interface?

No this version will not add anything to Panels UI since Panels UI is an interface designed by a third party and has nothing to do with the main fb2k development team. It uses elements from cloumns UI wich are not compatible with the new default UI. You can not use the playlist and the spectrum analizer to panels UI.

Normally, nothing should be lost except of the things mentioned in the upgrade notes. If you want to be absolutely safe however, just make a copy of the entire foobar folder and its configuration-file (depending on your settings, this file will be in the foobar folder, or somewhere in your windows profile folder).

PanelsUI is a 3rd party component - it is unrelated to the official components of foobar2000 and the new default UI. Panels UI is an entirely different UI than the new Default UI mentioned in the releasenotes and there is no interoperability.

I love the new features, keep up the great work!

I only have one request, and its regarding the playlist view...would it be possible to have playlist specific groupings?  The only reason I ask is because it would be nice to have one grouping for albums and one for singles!

I have never seen this "Tag in tagger window" command before. I think it must be from some third-party component you have installed.

It looks like it's impossible to delete a splitter without delete several (or all) UI elements.

Well, what would you expect to happen when you delete a container with several (more than one) elements in it?

I think Franck's screenshot should be expressive (I wanted to delete an empty container):
It looks like it's impossible to delete a splitter without delete several (or all) UI elements.

Cut the UI Element which you would like to keep, and paste it over the splitter.

Screenshots: 1 (http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/6920/11729883ds4.png), 2 (http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/6568/52944400mi8.png), 3 (http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/7108/91497562fr1.png), 4 (http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/1919/89339657cy3.png)

Thanks.

Besides, how have you got this background graduation for the playlist ?
In future development (since interface looks like in todo list), would it be possible to have a "font service" plugin, I mean fonts which could be used by others plugins. This font service would allow others plugins to use effects like shadow, etc. I suppose I dream, but why not transparency, etc.

Edit: why changing icons ? I suppose it's because of the change and I will get used to, but for now, I rue old icons.

It comes with newer versions of cwb_hooks.

The "tagger window" is a panel, so it will not work w/ the default ui.

Is it possible to add an option for the columns to auto scale when the window is resized? If there is such an option I haven't seen it.

I'll admit upfront that it is not such a big deal since I usually set the window size and leave it like that almost forever,  but I just thought it was a nice feature of ColumnsUI.

.. he does not wish to include in 0.9.5 and possibly not even in later versions. Examples for this are extended formatting capabilities in the playlist view (tab and color rendering found in the status bar and in old versions) ...

Coloring is what I miss in the new playlistview. If the old $rgb() will not be supported, the possibility of setting the font color for each column (in the playlist view) would be great.

BTW. very nice to have the advanced setting "thread count" for the converter. (With the availability of Quad-core CPUs the harddisk would become so stressed that there would be hardly speed gain.)

In order to add a toolbar header to an Element, you have to choose "Replace UI Element..." and then choose Toolbar head from a prompt titled "Replace xxxxx with..."

This doesn't seem to be the most intuitive way to add a toolbar header that doesn't replace anything, IMO.

[edit]
Furthermore, in the "Replace xxxxx with..." prompt, for the Toolbar header the description reads "Adds a toolbar to another UI Element." Which may be an attempt to clarify the above problem (although it's a bandage, not a cure), but this description causes another discrepancy: If I cut and paste an element that has a toolbar header, the toolbar header does not move and is not effected, which leads me to believe that it is actually added to the container, and not the actual element, as the description reads.

So really, the current implementation is really confusing.

Simpler solutions would be:

I've never tried scripting before and enjoyed the easy columns ui and album art. First thing to say, yay finally noobs can get awesome layouts as well.

Now we get to the 'problem'
I see the album art is covered as cover art. Great, no need for the album art plugin. But umm, how do configure that? I found Album art stub image path in preferences->Advanced but eh... no clue what to fill into.

The album art did great with the following script
Code: [Select]
$replace(%path%,%filename_ext%,)*
-$replace(%path%,%filename_ext%,)Scans\*
-$replace(%path%,%filename_ext%,)..\*
--components\default.*

What is a smilar script to get the cover art working?
Thx in advance.

It's ridiculous.. Hotkeys get caught during renaming? Spacebar can't be used for PAUSE (some people use their whole keyboards for quick actions / tagging / etc :) ?

PS 0.9.5 is a good step towards becoming "not only for aliens" software :) (Btw, does Preferences/Display/DUI/Icon/UseCustomIconFromFile change anything?)
But it will never reach power and popularity until it is (core that sits between db/ui/output) is really flexible (any UI, any "SQL" db) and friendly (LUA scripting) enough.

Yes a great release, certainly the way you can change the layout of the UI is a good idea, but I'll stick to panels, also the file renaming/moving/copying feature has been reworked and is quite hard to get to grips with the first time you use it.  I had a few crashes when viewing album art but it seems fairly stable.

If your file paths are withing the paths that are configured in your media library preferences this will not happen the second time you add them. Since the metadata will be stored in the media library and therefore fb2k will not have to read it from the files again. This has always been like that and is not new in the beta.

(Btw, does Preferences/Display/DUI/Icon/UseCustomIconFromFile change anything?)

That setting is contained in an group box labeled "System Notification Area"; coincidentally it changes the icon in the notification area.

But it will never reach power and popularity until it is (core that sits between db/ui/output) is really flexible (any UI, any "SQL" db) and friendly (LUA scripting) enough.

I find your sentence structure and curious use of punctuation a bit confusing, so I am not quite sure what exactly you mean. foobar2000 has had a modular structure from day one; the ability to use a different user interface module has existed since 0.8.* (or even longer, I am too lazy to check). Scripting would be a powerful addition, and I personally like Lua* for this purpose, but as it is users with no prior programming experience have already enough trouble when dealing with non-trivial title formatting scripts, so I do not think that "friendly" is the right word there.

*) The proper capitalization of "Lua" does not use all-caps; it is not an acronym.

I immediately liked the new Default UI a lot, but after using it for about a week now, I have couple of things I'd like to say.

A) This is an easy one and it's probably coming for the next version anyway, but I couldn't quickly find anything mentioned about it. What I'm missing is the ability to change font sizes more accurately. I'm using a remote control and I'm not always in front of the computer when I'm skipping or rating a song. It'd be nice to see the current song more further away and so far I've managed to set up this layout with two ridiculously looking playlist views: foobarDUI.jpg (http://koti.mbnet.fi/piqquam/foobarDUI.jpg)

B) I was really excited to see the new kind of spectrum. The way it shows how the song is played is something I've been looking for as a visualization since I played around in CoolEdit back in '67 or so. But the bad thing is that it goes the wrong way! It shows the history, what has been played already. What I'd really like to see, is the future: "Oh man, listen to this guitar solo, see, there it comes!"
(Not like "Oh man, did you hear that guitar solo? See, there it goes..? What do you mean you missed it!?")

i have similar problem, i used "track display panel" for large artist-title captions and additional info. that's one thing i really miss in current default ui (others are lyrics display, bookmark capability and some small tweaks). i would like to see it alongside with current "selection properties" element.

as for spectrum, i don't agree, it works just the way every spectrum is supposed to work. it is one of the reasons i can't drop 0.9.5 beta and downgrade. it gives you possibility to spot transcodes right in your player and that's essential for me, i've been trying to get something like that for years
it has some minor tweaks that should be adjusted, like default background color that isn't set on start-up but on beginning of a draw, so you have scrolling rectangle until it fills with your chosen color.

Another possibility would be to have links on everything so that if you double-click on the artist for example, the playlist would fill up with everything else in your library from that artist. Just an idea.

But I have a little problem with %bitrate% column!

The Selection Properties element displays information about the selected tracks similar to the Properties dialog though it does not allow tag editing.
... unfortunately.

Edit: Just out of curiosity, is there a specific reason why it is not allowed to edit tag entries from Selection Properties Element? Security I guess? Having an Element version of File Properties Dialog would push a step ahead foobar as the perfect tag editing tool in my opinion.

Congratulations for the new release. I have been fooling around with it and it really is very easy to configure with very little titleformat editing. Really powerful.

I have some observations/questions:

1. The components page says that Autoplaylists and Masstagger are "deprecated components and that similar functionality is available on other still-mantained components". To which components do you refer? I cannot mimic their functionality with the current beta, specially masstagger scripting for entire playlists and creating autoplaylists.

2. Is there any easy way to search a playlist (former playlist_search functionality)?

3. There seems to be a bug in the components preferences page when you scroll the list down:

A few requests:

-A "Now Playing Properties" panel along with the Selection Properties panel (or the ability to switch between now playing/selection mode). This would be useful for quickly getting info about the currently playing song without having to change the selection.

-Ability to edit tag info directly in the properties panel, just like you do in the properties window (but maybe have a confirmation dialog or the option to turn editing off to avoid accidental changes).

-Next/Previous buttons in properties dialog. I know this was asked for already and didnt get a good response, but I really do find myself wishing they were there. Ive been retagging my collection, and it would be really convenient to be able to scroll through songs in the properties window to check for errors and make quick fixes. I know about the "edit individual values" feature, but in most cases this is a hassle and I've nearly screwed up tags several times by not having songs in the right order.

Also, why are there no custom button toolbars? Wasn't this a standard default UI feature (or am I thinking of columnsUI)?

The deprecated masstagger component has now been replaced by the improved properties dialog, Quick Tagger(optional official component) and the 'File Operations' component in the installer, which isn't installed by default.

Amazing version!
Now it's time to remove old Columns UI and no longer developed Navigator theme.
I'm impressed!

Two things:
- spectrum miss scale of measuring, I don't know if it is 16 kHz or 20 kHz? I don't know if some ape is really ape file (full spectrum to 20 kHz), or for example fake ape (made from mp3's) (spectrum to 15-16 kHz)

- the preview of scripts should be one tab or stand alone editor with BIG and not narrow preview pane. many preview panes of scripts are to short to display full results of my complex scripting, also editing pane is to small  at i.e. converter scripting, file operations scripting, and so on... consider it in full version, PLEASE !

all other is BRILLIANT

Don't know if this was requested before, but:

When scrolling panels with mousewheel in 0.9.5 beta1, the active panel scrolls instead of the one that is under mouse pointer - this is very inconvenient and I guess this could be considered as a bug, since other popular software for Windows usually behaves differently (scrolling the element that is currently hovered)

Please add it to the list of requests or open issues.

I am looking forward to messing around with 0.9.5 when it comes out of beta.  Easier configuration and fewer external plug-ins equals good to me.

There are absolutely no real serious issues known in the beta (certainly not if you only use offical components), only a few small quirks maybe that mainly affect a few tiny UI glitches. You definitely don't have to worry about it messing with your system or your files in any way.

So feel free to have a look in case you are curious. Up to you of course since I con't want to talk you into anything that you don't want. Beta software is to use at your own riks of course, but I really believe there is nothing to worry about.

Another small thing I would be very grateful for is an option to disable row alteration in playlist view. As I understand, currently there is no way to get rid of it.

And one more: option to set middle-click action in playlist view (the same as it is done in albumlist). E.g. I don't use autoscroll and would like to set it to "Add to playback queue".

I'm having two issues--which may be related:
1) If there is an album selected--and the tracks are displayed in Playlist--the Clear command is not functional (grayed out).  Or....if I highlight the Tracks the Remove command is not functional.
Only way to clear is using 'New Playlist'.

2) If I attempt to play a new file (not in library) by clicking it, Foobar will start but--if there are items already sitting in the playlist--Foobar will not clear them and play the file.  Foobar opens, I get a brief 'Please wait' pop-up....then nothing.

Those items are playlist-specific, while commands listed at Preferences, Context Menu appear in multiple controls, like Album List, Facets, Playlist Manager, status bar, notification area icon, etc.

Can it be made possible that when you click the status bar you can see a volume slider like the previous default interface? I liked this option better because I don't use it that much so I don't like to have it on screen but when I use it it should be easily accessible.

Hi,

one thing I'm bother about is the next command. In previous versions it either took the next one in the playlist or, if the mode was in shuffle, took the next random track. Now it always takes the next one on the playlist whether or not the play mode is shuffle or default.

So now, next isn't as useful as before. I now must have two keys for going the the next song, one for next on the playlist and one for the a random song, which is annoying

Is this intended (I guess it is)? Or just an anomaly?

Greetings,
Cease

So far I really like the new release.  Memory consuming UI plugins are no longer necessary.

I have a couple of small feature requests, though:

1) In the Album List, can "auto-collapse on expand" be implemented like in the ColumnsUI version?

2) The new file operations interface is excellent!  Can the converter be redesigned to work this way too?  It would be nice to be able to use presets for various converter settings.

Thanks for this great release, and your time.

I'd like to see copy feature in future versions. Sometimes I need to copy list of my songs or just single song or selected songs to txt file etc.

I couldnt also find option that would let me modify duration column. I used to have similar formatting to this example:

Not playing - [3:00] (will just show time of song)
Playing - [1:02 / 3:00]

The statusbar is updating in wine with beta 2, before I had to minimize and restore the foobar2000 main window  to get it to update.

Thank you. I know you didn't fix it for wine especially and you probably don't care for it, my guess is you did it for improved usability with screen readers, but still thank you.

It wasn't such a big deal for me and I'm certainly not going to start posting bugs that only appear in wine.

Keep up the good work, we appreciate it.

Man this is so great!!!
Just today I was gonna finally give a go to ColumnsUI but before that I decided to check for new versions and this comes up

Now I don't have to use ColumnsUI, love the fact everything seems to be getting centralized instead of having to rely on a lot of 3rd party components.

the only thing I don't like is the fact album art is "fixed" completely so you can't roll your own filters for the AA component to find it
I guess I'll have to rely on some 3rd party component that supports regex.

Focus question.

Why doesn't clicking on a tab give focus the the Element contain within that tab?

e.g. this is my layout:

Say I have focus on my playlist. and by sidebar is currently o9n the playlist tab, like shown in the above pic.

If I click the albumlist tab, then move the mousewheel, I am expecting the albumlist element to scroll as it is the only thing in that tab. Instead, the playlist scrolls.

The copy command string happens to be part of a deprecated API. There is no plan to get rid of the "Copy Name(s)" command as such; on the contrary it is likely that there will be an improved version of this command some time.

1. The components page says that Autoplaylists and Masstagger are "deprecated components and that similar functionality is available on other still-mantained components". To which components do you refer?

The deprecated masstagger component has now been replaced by the improved properties dialog, Quick Tagger(optional official component) and the 'File Operations' component in the installer, which isn't installed by default.

In 0.9.5 beta 2 I can't figure out how to tag music files using filenames and filepaths and a pattern like for example:
%artist% - %album%\%track% - %title%

Quick Tagger can't do it and File Operations is just the opposite (rename/move files based on tags instead of tagging based on folder and filename information). Neither do I see a way to achieve it using the Properties command. In former versions this was easy to do right clicking on selection.

Thx for clearing up.

And: Congrats for making fb2k better and better (and that's hard!) and keep it free

In 0.9.5 beta 2 I can't figure out how to tag music files using filenames and filepaths and a pattern like for example:
%artist% - %album%\%track% - %title%

open the properties (metadata-tab) and you will find an entry "automatically fill values" in it's contextmenu.
by default the source is "file names". change it to "other..." and enter %path% instead of %filename%.
now your pattern should work!
(at least it works for me)
Title: foobar2000 0.9.5 beta 9
Post by: Frank Bicking on 2007-10-29 17:50:39
Using %path% would mean that you would have to specify the whole path to the file in your pattern (e.g. C:\Music\%artist% - %album%\%track% - %title%).

In contrast to that, you only need to specify parent folders with the "File Names" source:

%artist% - %album%\%track% - %title%

Works fine for me.

By the way, guessing tags from the filenames (edit: in the Properties dialog) is not a 0.9.5-new feature, it has been possible since 0.9.3 (July 2006).

The "Automatically Fill Values" is the trick thx. The most obvious or natural place to look for the option of tagging based on filename and path is in the rightclick menu "Tagging", as it was in v0.9.4.5, at least for me and I think for most people is.

Hm. I can't seem to find two things after upgrading:
- The playlist cut/copy paste options. The changelog says they are integrated to the core now; however, I can't seem to find them. When searching for strings under the keyboard shortcuts option, "Cut" and "Copy" only come up for layout options.
- Copy Info between files. This was a handy method of copy tags from a tagged album to one that was yet untagged. It's a part of the masstagger, and I don't see a simple to use function in the new file operation dialogs.

I've updated foo_utils as well.

When I filter the list for the keywords "cut" or "paste", I can only find options related to the layout. Theres a "copy" option, which describes itself as "Copies selected tracks to Windows Clipboard", but I can't find neither Cut nor Paste.

The Properties dialog has been better at this than mass tagger for a long time.

Is there a way to do it that doesn't involve opening multiple properties boxes? The masstagger one was compact, fast, and effective, and all it required was highlighting files next to each other, in order.

Edit: Another minor thing. I see it is now possible to set the number of work threads for the converter. Very handy option, since in dual core machines, you can now force 1 threads, which improves speeds when working with files on removable media (such converting files form a DVD).
However, forcing 1 work thread is a regression when I'm converting files from my HD, which can handle multiple simultaneous reads.
Would it be possible to set up the Converter so it uses 1 thread when converting from cd/dvd/drive number "x", and 2 threads on my hard drives/drive number "y, z"?

No, but the solution is still fast enough, and you get a proper preview of how the tags are going to look like.

Select the source files, open Properties, select all fields (Ctrl+A), copy (Ctrl+C), then open Properties for the target files, and paste fields (Ctrl+Shift+V).

One thing i would like to see in a future version of foobar is the possibility to rightclick in the album list and select "delete from library" or something similar.

How is that related to 0.9.5 beta testing? Please do not spam this thread with random proposals.

And actually, it's already possible. Just add the "Remove File(s) from Library" command at Preferences, Display, Context Menu. Note that these files are going to be readded as soon as you rescan the library or add them to a playlist. If you want to physically delete the files, use File Operations, Delete Files. This requires the File Operations component which has to be selected manually during setup.

That seems to be the case, as I use Columns UI. Any idea how can I reimplement it? It's one of my most often used shortcuts...

edit: nevermind, it seems to be a foo_utils issue. I downgraded it to the last 20070125 version, and the commands are back.

edit2: Some problems I noticed in the default uis custom playlist views. It is used for the search dialog (Which I custom mapped to ctrl+f under columns ui). The problem is that it does not override keyboard shortcuts like it used to do (and as every other panel does). So for example, if I have the Spacebar mapped to play/pause for quicker controls, I cannot type search strings with a space in them. It will instead pause the song as I attempt to do so. I realize that Foobar even warns me to not add common keys as shortcuts, but other then this new search window, I've experienced absolutely no issues.

This also makes it impossible to copy/paste phrases from notepad for example, as ctrl+v is mapped to playlist paste. Both of these issues exist using the default ui as well as columns.

And while I'm talking about the new search panel... It is not configurable under columns ui, the config page drops to the blank "another user interface is active" page.
Furthermore, quotes have no effect. Searching for "Dust and" will hit everything that has both the words "Dust" and "And" in them, instead of just dropping back the track that has the exact phrase "Dust and". I seem to recall this working fine in older versions, making it a regression.

The new file-edit dialog is really great. Filecopy/move-dialog is also a great improvment. I first though: "Oh my - a lot of work to get it working the way I used to do it with masstagger" - but hey: brilliant!

I have little suggestion for the dialog: Could we get a drop down-history for the upper field too?

(http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/2677/zwischenablage1cn1.th.jpg) (http://img216.imageshack.us/my.php?image=zwischenablage1cn1.jpg)

It moreover would be nice, if the size would be saved. The dialog is too little.

Common practice is to backup both your settings and foobar folder before upgrading.
Or do it manually using 7zip, open the installer and overwrite appropriate files.

Foobar 0.9.5b2 is great, but there are some basic things that are missing IMO. It would be awesome if we could have the features of "album list panel" inside album list. I'm talking about basic features like the album view playlist with "auto send to playlist", that shows immediately the contents of the folders that are focused inside the album list.

Also, album art viewer doesn't show the contents of the focused items inside album list. It only shows the cover of specific focused tracks and not entire albums too, as it should be. Except the above two missing features, i found that when i am in "Layout Editing Mode", i can't delete a UI Element but only cut, copy or paste it. It would be veeery useful if you add the option to delete UI Elements when anyone wants. I'm sure that i'm not the only one who needs these features, because they are very basic and important,so please if you can, consider adding them.

Except the above basic things i think that it would be very good if we could change the playback buttons with our "button kits". This could improve a little the UI. Also, inside the playlist, when we group by artist date and album, it could much more readable if artist and album/date were in different lines, because when album or artist names are long, its easier for the eye to recognise quicker the album title or the artist name (because they are in different places and not the one after the other). I believe that this saves time, and make playlist more organised.

Thank you very much for this great program!I'm going to miss UI Panels a lot, but i believe in easy and flexible design of the new Foobar.

Tagging features can be found in the Properties dialog (right-click on a selection, Properties), including automatically setting track numbers and total tracks (right-click, Auto Track Number), filling values from the file names, formatting fields by means of titleformatting, capitalizing values, and so on; all in the context menus of said dialog. There also is a new Quick Tagger (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=58234) component to set predefined values from the context menu or with keyboard shortcuts.

The Masstagger is no longer developed. It has been removed from the setup and is available at the "Optional components" site as a deprecated component.

Is it possible to process files per 'Automatically Fill Values'-pattern directly by context-menu or at least keyboard-shortcut, comparable with the masstagger-scripts ?
The 'Automatically Fill Values'-panel is nice and has some nice options, but sometimes you want to go the direct way, without click, click, click, click. At least 2 clicks and to much selection on the way IMHO.

The improved Properties Dialog now integrates tagging-features which previously were part of the Masstagger.

I'm really impressed with new UI and components. Finally changed from old-customized Navigator theme to something new. Organizing music is so much nicer now.

Besides of what is mentioned in feature proposals thread (colors, tabs, alignment, spectrum options are the most important for me) I dare to suggest a few other things:

- $caps2 feature in properties window
- Selected files count in statusbar (if playlist is long, there is no easier way to tell if what we see as selected, is all that its really selected)
- Would be nice if double clicking on row generated by grouping scheme (in playlist) could call properties window (or possibly be configured to anything else), now it plays first track from this selection (pointless IMO as the same can be achieved by double clicking one line below)
- In selection properties element - could there be added option to disable display of caption? In my case, this component is set up that each information (Metadata, Location etc) is displayed in its own tab - so the same information as in caption is already in tab name.
- Now its hard to include all information in grouping scheme, for me perfect would be: album artist, year, album, genre, AG, totaltracks for full information. I wish that there could be added second line to grouping scheme, preferably with smaller font.
- Borders for collumns

It would be very nice (and i think its also very easy to implement) if we could add a resizable space in the toolbar (like the one in the Firefox toolbar - only more precise). This would help to position the other ellements (like buttons or volume control) anywhere in the toolbar. Right now i had to use the "layout editing mode" button so i can keep the volume control on a normal size.

click for full size:

I love the new foobar beta. I appreciate that the authors are trying to make this incredible program more friendly for beginners (like me) whith the new default UI.

I was wondering if custom capitalization schemes will be possible in the future. Maybe a option in "Preferences" - ... - "Properties dialog" could be added for the "Capitalize" command.
Not all languages use the English capitalization scheme, and I prefer "feat." instead of "Feat." etc.

It allows too many nonsensical combinations. How would you sort %artist% by %tracknumber%, for example?

On one hand I'd say if the user really wants to do that nonsense, let him do, on the other hand I understand that this breaks the principle of easy configuration, because the user can unintenional do something he don't want to.

In Facets, you can already add both Artist and Artist Sort columns, sort by the Artist Sort column, and finally hide the column by resizing it to a width of 0px.

This is total sufficient. I didn't play too much with facets until now, so I didn't see this solution. But it can't be used for album list.

The users profile switch should never be disabled under Vista. UAC does not allow unlimited access to folders such as "program files". Therefore programs themselves also can not write files to said folder without running into various issues.

Maybe the installer can be changed to warn users running Vista not to use this option? (Maybe it wasn't clear from my post but I'm well aware about the Vista rights in the program files folder)

Please only warn the user, as some ppl know how to deal with UAC and still use foobar with Enable user profile support disabled.

On a side note, if you use Vista with UAC and having problem with certain legacy program writing to protected folders, just install it in a different folder that you created. If it doesn't work at that time (due to Vista inability to virtualize it with VirtualStore folder or more like that legacy program likes to write to other protected folders too), you will have to run it in Administrator Compatibility mode. You will also have problem with programs like to write to HKLM tree in the registry.

  • Apparently, many people do not like the current buttons. What about switching to the simple white Tango media player icons (http://tango.freedesktop.org/Tango_Icon_Library) (fourth line from the bottom in both sets)? They are quite neutral and fit to many visual styles.

We'll see what we can do about that in the future. Tango icons? Certainly not. Also a matter of personal taste I'd say.

  • Talking about matters of taste: I liked the old icon better as well (it has already been mentioned elsewhere). It's harder to recognize the logo now...

I have a suggestion -- you can delete playlists by middle-clicking the tab, but it deletes immediately on mousedown; for such a destructive action, I think it'd be better if it deleted on mousedown+mouseup instead (feels more natural imo and gives the user a chance to abort). Just wanted to say thanks for the new version. This one has me switched over completely to foobar now. Just wanted to suggest two things. When you deselect the program, but foobar is still visible, the Album Art of the currently playing song disappears and it says No Selection. I think it would be nicer if the picture would just stay. Furthermore an option to remove the splitter bars once you have everything set up would be nice.

There's a typo in the Fix VBR header dialog, second paragraph

...
  • Include window sizes into exported config files. Very often, clean display of column widths and album art viewer sizes depend on pixel-exact window sizes, so it might be useful to include them into the export files. if someone (like me) plans to switch between two different views, (s)he doesn't have to do the resizing all the time...
...

Try locking the splitters containing these elements (right click on the splitter bar).

Has anyone else noticed that foo_albumlist now seems to be dependent on foo_ui_std?  If you remove the standard interface (and use columns ui or something), going to the library menu and clicking "album list", or going to the preferences and activating the list from there do nothing (no window shows up).  Not good.

!!!THANKS TO PETER FOR THE NEW GREAT DEFAULT UI!!!
(Now I don't know which UI to use: Default, Columns or Panels...)

I have a few proposals:
1. It would be nice if I could select a number of fields in Selection Properties panel and copy/cut/delete/paste them. And if preferences of the panel (table: metadata/location/general/replay gain/other) would appears when I right-click columns headers of the panel.
2. Antialiasing in Spectrum panel.
3. I would like Album Art Viewer panel to be much more configurable (i.e. I store pics in other folders, with other names...).
4. I would like to have Lyrics panel, Peakmeter panel.
5. It would be nice if the buttons (stop, play and other) would be configurable and skinable like in UI Columns.

Thanks for the advice!

However, as I explained some posts below, this doesn't help in my case, since the splitter lock only works in one direction... Furthermore, saving the window size in export files  would make sharing configurations much easier. Actually, it's an important part of any DUI configuration, isn't it (even the display of maximised-window-configs is dependent on the screen resolution)?

I second fooruncle's request. It's quite inconvenient to resize window after importing some config or even just applying the layout from scratchbox.

(I know the know/fixed issues page mentions beta4, but that may just be the official release)

Beta 4 is there since a couple hours.

Quote
Issues fixed in beta 4

    * Bug: "Reset Page" doesn't reset playback state display formatting settings in Preferences / Display / Default User Interface.
    * Glitch: When starting playback of slow-to-open files/streams, status bar still shows "stopped".
    * Glitch: MP3 decoder was using wrong compiler settings, resulting in a slowdown.
    * Regression: Some Converter error messages less readable than in pre-0.9.5.
    * Usability: "Send to Playlist" dialog is modal.
    * Usability: "Create Album List View from These Items" dialog content doesn't update with moving/deleting files.
    * Bug: When using the copy command in album list and pasting the result in search filter the last letter is not copied
    * Usability: Open Audio CD dialog: "Add To Playlist" button not disabled when currently active playlist is an autoplaylist
    * Usability: Open Audio CD dialog: "Open Audio CD..." menu command spawns another dialog instead of activating already existing one when one already exists
    * Usability: Open Audio CD dialog: "Rip" button not always grayed out when Converter component is not available

when I do a file operations rename - there is no way to auto capitalize file names, like there is when you tag files.

i guess the work around is to tag first and then rename the files accordingly

additionally when i do a file rename and when changing one file to another based on my naming standards - sometimes I get a duplicate - it it possible to have an option to delete if already exists perhaps based on name / file size / bit rate - I think this would be a good option.

i like the notification to say there were failed attempts to rename but maybe a better dialogue box could be created or a list of left hand side vs right hand side and then you can tick the file to keep and the one to overwrite..

But foo_utils is still 0.6.2 beta 3 (http://foosion.foobar2000.org/0.9.5/). Does this mean anything? Because usually there was a new foo_utils for every new core beta...

Just registered to say Thank You! to all the folks who made this release possible.
I am in love with the new Default UI. Everything is stable and working well.

There are a few things i would like to suggest / ask though:

1• I used to have keyboard shortcuts to some of the context-menu Tag Scripts to rate the current playing file quickly. What would be the alternative now that it seems there are is no Edit Tag dialogue? It is simply too cumbersome to open the Properties dialog and fill in the RATING tag manually.

2• What happened to the Buttons? even the buttons with beta3 seemed to be fine, pretty nice and simple. The buttons with beta4 seem to be distorted and uglier siblings. Custom buttons would be fine as suggested earlier, if the process can it can be kept simple, but the default buttons should at least be usable!

3• It would be nice if there were some option to customize at least the Group Header Text in the Playlist View Groups, or some way to shade groupings.

4• Is there a way i can customize the filenames that the new Album Art Viewer searches for in a folder. What does it look for by default?

5• I prefer the default seekbar slider prior to 0.9.5. It was 'Sharper'. (I am on XP with Themes disabled.)

6• Numbers indicating the amplification levels in the Equalizer (as it used to be earlier) would be great.

Thats all as of now. Will Play some more and get back.
Thank you Again.

The masstagger is not an optional component, its command is now called "Tagging/Manage Scripts". However, for simple things like rating, the new Quick Tagger is easier. See the optional components (http://www.foobar2000.org/components/) page for both.

3• It would be nice if there were some option to customize at least the Group Header Text in the Playlist View Groups, or some way to shade groupings.

You can already create custom grouping schemes. See Preferences > Display > Default User Interface > Playlist View.

See Known Issues and Feature Proposals (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=58351) and recent posts for answers to your other questions.

thanks Foosion for your reply and patience. didn't notice the Quick Tagger optional component earlier.

3• It would be nice if there were some option to customize at least the Group Header Text in the Playlist View Groups, or some way to shade groupings.

i meant customizing the color/font/background/border etc. i guess:
Quote
# Feature: Color and tab rendering in custom columns ($rgb and $tab)
would be a step in that direction.

and here are some more Thoughts...

1• one thing i haven't been able to achieve is the display of lyrics without the use of UIpanels in the default UI. I think the Selection Properties UI Element can be made more powerful if one can choose what information is displayed via Title Formatting, thereby displaying embedded Lyrics if i want it to. Also, as of now when i click on the fields in Selection Properties it shows an editable box, but i can't edit the data. If the data could be directly edited for some of the fields, it would be quite useful  to edit some tags quickly e.g. Comments etc. (In a way it would intuitively provide the functionality of the InfoBox plugin)

2• the search box could be available as an UI Element, displaying/updating the results in a Playlist.

3• i have always missed the ability to browse the playlist with keyboard alphabets i.e. for example, in iTunes, if the playlist is sorted by artist and i press the 'R' key on the keyboard, i am brought to the first artist track that starts with R and so on... Its a default Explorer behaviour. It would a nice addition that would make browsing simpler (though i don't know if its simple to implement!).

4• is there a way to save the sorting schemes (formatting patterns) in Edit>Sort>Sort by.... (i am sorry if this is too generic a question and not appropriate for this thread.)

it ain't working on customized layout, my foobar looks like patched up frankenstein. also if that "order" word could be kicked out of "playback order" component it would be great.

I loved the 0.9.5 beta 3, so I was really excited to upgrade to b4. I used that new customizable interface as much as I could: nothing fancy only the elements that came standard in the interface designer.

However, now whenever I have FB2K running and switch windows, and come back to FB2K, the previous window image is "stuck" in the playlist window. Even if I minimize and bring the window back, it does not show the playlist section. I uninstalled everything from the b4 and went back to the b3 but the bug persists, which makes this more frustrating.

I take immaculate care of my computer. This is getting annoying since I haven't installed anything new. Any one else experience this problem?

bug

when i have a playlist that shows the playlise file size eg 1.6gb and i slowly start removing files and i get to 1.1gb and removed one more file so you would asume it would go to something like 1.09gb but instead it shows 1.9gb all the way down to 1gb... i can do this reliably, it comes in to play quite a bit cause i try and make playlists for my ipod and keep overshooting, so i need to keep trimming the list until i get it right.. but when i remove 900mb and all of a sudden the playlist says its 1.9gb again its really strange...

im an guessing its just a formatting issue or something?

I find the following usability issues with the new beta which in my view need revision

F3 or CTRL + F only instigates search if a playlist has focus. It will not work if another ui element has focus. This seriously compromises the utility of the search function.

Search text box crashes if backspace is used. (beta 3 - unconfirmed on beta 5)

Keyboard arrows no longer work position slider. (I am aware of the present policy on keyboard shortcuts but this one seems unnecessary and very limiting)

Position and volume sliders are large and ugly.

2• the search box could be available as an UI Element, displaying/updating the results in a Playlist.

Having the search box as Ui Element (Toolbar like old foo_playlist_find for 0.8) would indeed be nice: founded tracks are highlighted and you can navigate through them by up and down arrow keys.
An own playlist for displaying results is a little bit too much. Once the quicksearch plugin is ported you will have that feature anyway.

This bug's been around for awhile:

I have foobar semi-transparent on a second monitor.  After right clicking folders/files in an explorer window and playing or adding to the queue with explorer's context menu, foobar becomes opaque even though it doesn't receive focus and I have to give focus to foobar and then click off it for the transparency to return.

Pick a frequency band. Pick a source sample. I bet you can't ABX the equalized version from the source with a 1dB difference in any given frequency band. +1dB on all frequencies is hard enough to ABX. Yeah, 1dB is a reasonably significant change. Still, it's sufficiently small for the application. You don't seriously need sub-decibel equalizer resolution, do you? For what purpose?

Note that the workaround for single-keystroke keyboard shortcuts stealing input from editboxes in beta 6 is partial/incomplete, it will be fixed properly in beta 7; at the moment, keys such as plus/minus signs (mapped to volume control by default in older versions of foobar2000) still can't be typed if they're assigned.

Using pre-0.9.5 style default keyboard mappings is a bad idea, they clash with Album List navigation (auto-search by typing item name) as well as with auto-search in playlist that will be implemented in one of upcoming releases. You can re-add them manually without ruining any important functionality now, but that doesn't mean they don't break anything.

The beta version is awesome! I am officially wiping Winamp from my system and using foobar2000 exclusively. There are a few things I noted, though, that I think would improve usability and make the program more polished. I hope some of them will make it to the final version.

PREFERENCES
- BUG: In "Context Menu" (under Display), window does not scroll up when dragging items to the top edge
- option to send/add Album List and Playlist items to a Default list by double-clicking or clicking using middle button (similar to the "Always send to playlist: Default" option in General)

LIBRARY
- option to exclude subfolders from scans

PLAYLIST VIEW
- show stop symbol in "Playing" column when playback stops so we can tell which song was just played and which song is next. Currently, if you don't have the current song selected, there is no way to tell what the current position is on the playlist when it's stopped. This is particularly problematic when using the "stop after current" option
- show queue order in "Playing" column
- mouse shortcut for queueing songs (middle button or alt-click)
- always highlight current position even when another song is selected
- "clear search" button for Playlist Search
- toolbar buttons for clearing and removing playlists (useful when using switcher instead of tabs, which can be removed by middle-clicking)
- it would be very useful for the "Show Now Playing" command to select the current position even when playback is stopped

LAYOUT
- command to save/export current layout
- ability to undo layout changes
- option to make some layout and toolbar elements fixed size instead of relative size

PLAYLIST MANAGER
- preferences for playlist manager similar to those for album list (i.e., double-click and middle-click action, start playback when sending selection to playlist)
- something to visually distinguish autoplaylists from normal playlists
- column for autoplaylist search query and ability to edit query
- a playlist manager view element that displays the contents of a playlist selected in the manager (separate from the main playlist view, which would show the active playlist). This way, I can preview a playlist before activating it or add only a selection of songs from it to my current playlist

PLAYLIST SWITCHER
- something to visually distinguish autoplaylists from normal playlists

ALBUM LIST
- "clear search" button for search filter, please!
- syntax to allow for pre-expanded categories
- transparent or grey corners for the expand/minimize (+/-) signs would make colour themes a lot more attractive

OTHER
BUG: status bar sometimes cuts off text even though there is more room
- Pressing 'Esc' on keyboard when dragging seekbar slider should cancel seeking and return slider to current position without interrupting playback
- ability to display total playlist duration on status bar
- volume slider tool tip should be displayed above the slider instead of below it where it is blocked by the mouse cursor
- playback history component

I use foobar for about 2 years, but i'm confused about the pros and the cons between the new Winamp 5.5 and the new Foobar. For me, Foobar had the best layout with UI panels. To be more specific:

Current playlist is not good at all compared to the old (UI panels) had. The ability to have the cover art inside playlist and the name of the artist and album in different lines (the one above the other, sorted by album etc..) was something unique and veeery practical. Its very important to be able to see all the info at once. When we have the artist and the album info in the same line, it's not so well organised. What happens if names are long? The line could be "endless" and hard to read.
Also the current album list element is not so good as the previous album list panel and album art should be able to read info from folders too.
Personally i will keep the previous foobar2000 and hope that the new one will have the basic features that we had with panels UI. How can you compare the usability of panels UI playlist with current one? IMO the new playlist its not good and needs improvement.
Why devs didn't make default UI as panels UI? Ok, some things should have to be out to make it more stable and easy to use, but it would be faaar better..
Anyway, thank you for your efforts Foobar devs, you made a very special and unique player and i hope that you will keep it like this.

Nothing prevents you from using Panels UI (people still do that, for some unknown likely-masochistic reason) with the new version, regardless of changes to the Default UI.

Why didn't foobar developers make something like Panels UI? You can answer that yourself - Just think of what foobar development has concentrated on so far, and what Winamp and other 3rd party devs worked on. Do remember in an application like foobar, Functionality should come before looks - Or at least, That's how i understand foobar.

Anyway, thank you for your efforts Foobar devs, you made a very special and unique player and i hope that you will keep it like this.
As you've stated PanelsUI is very hard to use.
Let me give you an example:
The K-Meleon browser is extremely customizable. With it's macro language, you can do anything you want interface wise. But you probably have never heard of it, because it can be extremely frustrating to use. Instead, you might use Firefox or Opera, because they're much easier to use and customize, even if their not as powerful.

Simplicity and good UI design make extreme customization obsolete and unnecessary.

I just noticed, that the "Capitalize" command in Properties doesn't work correctly with multiline tags as it doesn't capitalize words on the beginning of lines.

I am using this beta on Windows Vista Home Premium (32bit).  When I attempt to write tags to mp3 files, I get an Access Denied error: "Could not update tags (Access denied)".  I checked and the permissions on the files seem fine, so I reverted to 0.9.4.5 and that writes the tags with no problem.  Anyone else having this problem and/or know of a solution?

The files are on an external drive, and foobar is installed in Program Files.  The odd thing is that the current stable version writes the tags fine while beta 6 fails with the Access Denied.  Beta 6 has no problem renaming the files based on tag patterns - it just fails on writing the tags.

I am having a file association problem with the new beta 6:

An error occurred while changing file type associations. If you are using a limited account, please contact your system administrator.

I am running WinXP Home SP2 as an admin (I am the only account on this computer). The file extensions that I can't seem to associate foobar with are the following:

.wave
.oga
.fth
.fla

I don't [currently] use these file extensions for any of my songs so it isn't a big deal, but those are the ones that show up in the 'file types' list in preferences.

I actually just tried that before checking back here and it worked fine.  Does the new beta handle permissions differently from 0.9.4.5?  I ran that without telling to run as Admin and it had no problem writing the tags.

This release is amazing! totally different than 0.9.4.5!
It allowed me to compact my fb2k by adding those artist/album/year header(because then I didn't need more columns for artist, album and year)
Also will probably attract more people to fb2k

OK - it looks like the reason that 0.9.4.5 worked is because the installer forces Foobar to run in Admin mode.  So when I ran it immediately after installing it, (from the option "Launch foobar now" in the installer) it was already running with elevated privs.  The beta installer looks to be fixed so Foobar launches with normal permissions.  Thanks to the guys in #foobar2000 for that info!  Once that was straightened out, it was just a matter of kicking Vista hard enough to set the file permissions correctly.

I really think you guys did a great job and all but one of the things I like about foobar is the minimalism. The columns and stuff just throw me off, reminds me of iTunes. Any way you would ever consider adding an option for "old style UI"  or just a way to remove columns so the info was all just written on one line like the good ol' days?

i wanted the same thing too. all i did was made a custom column which contained the string from the 'playlist' title formatting in the older style foobar. however, i had to add two other columns; one for the now playing indicator and another for the track length. in essence, there are three columns altogether, but it looks very similar to the old style default ui

I've noticed a weird change in how playlist switching is working

Back in the 0.8.x days I had global shortcut keys bound to play/pause/random and next/previous playlist. while say.. playing a game - I used to be able hit my global for next playlist, and then random/play so I could listen to a different set of tracks.

A while back when I upgraded to 0.9 I noticed this stopped working properly, but I procrastinated in troubleshooting it. (until now)

Currently (.9.5 b6,b7) when you switch playlists via a shortcut or even in the UI, it doesn't truly activate until you select a track with a double click or the enter key. until you do that, no matter what you're looking at - global shortcut keys are manipulating the last-played playlist.

I can't seem to find anything like "activate currently selected playlist" in options/shortcuts.

Is this working as intended? or am I missing something amazingly obvious?

I noticed a small issue with the playlist search window in the default UI.  I have a dual monitor set up and with fb2k open on the right monitor with the playlist search window open, if I click on an IE window on the left monitor and use the mouse scroll wheel both the IE window and the playlist search window scroll.  This is with 0.9.5 Beta 7 on Vista (Logitech mouse and software if that matters).

Edit: Hmm .. but not always.  Can't seem to make this happen consistently.  Nevermind, must be something I'm doing!

I noticed something that may be related.
You can select a track in each playlist, when you switch playlists and do "shift click" (to select a couple of items from and including the already selected track), It acts weird, like it is still remembering the previously selected track in the other playlist.

I hope you see what I mean.

Observations about the beta:

1.  Please add a way to increase the font size of the Metadata dialog as the text is nearly too tiny to read.

2.  The buttons at the top are too tiny and close to each other to easily click.

3.  I absolutely love the new ability to display embedded album art.

Thank you for this release!
I have to admit that even if I bitched on foobar when all my plugins went incompatible with 0.9.x (and some still aren't ported) this new version is very cool. The new interface is functional and lightweight, just as one would expect from this excellent player
I just hope the plugins format will not be changed anymore, or if it's done, that it will be possible to "emulate" the old ones (I'm not speaking about UI but at least audio control). A simple API taking care of UI things instead of direct windows API access like in winamp would be cool too (I don't know if it's the case currently in foobar) for future compatibility. Anyway it's sad that most people that make foobar plugins don't release their source, we would just need to recompile them else :/

I don't know whether this is a regression, since I haven't tried this with previous versions (or whether it is a bug at all).  With version 0.9.5 beta 8, when I try to remove metadata associated with audio CD tracks using the "Remove tags from files(s)" command in the context menu, I get errors like Could not remove tags (Invalid path) from:
"cdda://01397A2E,01"
.  The audio CD is still in the drive (and playable).

Are other people having this problem?  Is this menu item not intended to work with audio CDs at all?

I use foobar2000 with foo_playlist_tree.dll component.
With playlist_tree I create random queries by using $rand() function in "Population Order" field.
When I use command "Refresh Queries" I get new random list of songs.
Last working version  for creating this queries is 0.95 beta6.
Now command "Refresh Queries" not work in 0.95 beta7 and 0.95 beta8.

For queries without  using $rand() function command "Refresh Queries" work normal in last beta.

I use last version of foo_playlist_tree.dll.

FB2K 0.9.5 has some great features - seems like a huge jump forward from 0.9.4.*, which was already a really good base.

There is, as is traditional, just one little thing that bugs me  - in 0.9.4.*, the progress slider in the toolbar can get input focus. This means that I can scan through a series of tracks using just the cursor keys and Return, since left/right will jump the play position forwards and backwards. I use this an enormous amount to check for glitches in CD rips and it saves a lot of time. In 0.9.5 beta 8, I have to wave the mouse around trying to jump through the track by clicking along the progress bar.

Any chance of getting left/right to skip forwards and backwards through the track, probably by some percentage of total track length? Then 0.9.5 would be my new best friend

I'm talking to myself now...

Finding that "Ctrl+A" didn't work either, I had a look around the preferences and realised that a bunch of the keyboard shortcuts I'd previously taken for granted weren't defined. Using those, it's possible to set up all kinds of seek actions with the left/right keys. Could be neat to have a percentage-based seek option there too, but there's certainly no regression in functionality with the previous release as it stands.

So, new best friend it is, then!

(Post script - spotted bimbel's reply once I submitted the above - yes, that's the trick, many thanks).

Is Random (in the playback order listbox) working properly in beta 8?  It's now behaving the same as Default for me. In prior versions, if I set Random and hit the key I have associated with Next track, it would go to a random track. Now it goes to the next track in the playlist.  Shuffle (tracks) seems to be functioning properly.

Just to be clear, I'm not trying to use $rand()

Why does the behavior described in the FAQ make any sense?  Isn't the idea of Random order that the order is random and that the next track will be played at random?  In other modes, the Next command goes to the next track indicated by the Order listbox.

A couple of remarks/questions:

- It appears that tracks are added to playlists unsorted (using Send to Playlist from the Album List). Only autoplaylists use the sorting string in Preferences > General > Sort incoming files by...

- When using Shuffle Albums, albums by Various Artists will play only one track and then jump to another album (or do I need to fill in Album Artist for this to work correctly?). It would be nice if Shuffle Albums would play tracks according to the way the playlist is grouped.

- Is it possible to create a 'tab' or a different alignment in the Grouping string? I'd like to have a divider like this:
Artist - Album (Date) [aligned left] --------- Codec / Bitrate [aligned right]

- Is it possible to exclude articles and other small words (a, the, and, on, in, from, etc.) from the Capitalize option? A configurable option in Preferences would be great for this function.

I think it has been requested already but I would like to add my voice to request a more customizable grouping headers in playlist view, and in other places in general (metadata properties).
Is it impossible to show text in a given panel with 2 different font faces with current architecture? If showing more than one font face at the same time it would be nice at least being able to customize background color, format (bold, cursive, ALL CAPS) and point size.
Also the grouping headers background does not change colour when you click on them and stay selected, they only get framed around. A different background color state for the headers when selected and frame the whole playlist instead of just the header would be much more visually clear to represent the whole playlist or group as being selected.

This is a little graphical mockup of what I'm talking about:

Converter + DSP bug!?

When I use the converter to create mp3 or m4a the cmdline-program (lame.exe, neroaacenc.exe) gets high cpu priority if the DSP-processing is enabled and SSRC or SRC resampler ist used. This nearly stops your PC.
If PPHS is used instead the priority of lame.exe is correct (lower than normal).
Bug or feature?  (I'm using beta 8 + XP, but seems to exist also in older versions.)

Might be Facet related? I think that after doing things. Like applying RG or renaming files or tagging them Facet reloads everything and whatever is marked in Facet will appear in the playlist. That is very annoying if you just put a new folder in your library but haven't reloaded the Media Library.

Likewise, if it's an Autoplaylist, changing the tags could well result in the disappearance of files from that playlist (since the files may no longer meet the criteria that generated the playlist in the first place).

Thanks for b9. The 256x256 icon is back! I'm not on Vista, but use rocketdock, which likes huge icons...

The speed to convert files is faster than ever in beta 9. Thank you, the fb2k dev team.

??? I doubt there were changes and additionally conversion speed is mainly a matter of the encoder speed, and a bit a matter of decoding the source speed.

You can select a track in each playlist, when you switch playlists and do "shift click" (to select a couple of items from and including the already selected track), It acts weird, like it is still remembering the previously selected track in the other playlist.

Still the same in b8, this can be easiest tested right after startup.

The problem seems gone in b9, good work guys.

hi - I am running the latest beta 9 and without properly testing but noticed 1 or 2 betas ago the album list component is running like a dog for me...

I have a music collection approx 500gb but the context menus even struggle to come up the memory footprint spikes to 120+ mb or RAM, this was not the case in earlier versions and renders the component un usable

it slow up happens ad soon as i right click > now I struggle to clear / scan my dead entries and I recently redid my folder structure the component is lagging badly... not sure what info you need form me troubleshooting wise..  its worked fine in the past I have xp sp2 (latest updates) p4 2.8ghz + 2gb ram should run smooth...

when i minize foobar to tray the memory footprint goes to 1mb.. just seems to be the album list not liking me...

Hi,
you need to be in Layout Edition Mode. Go to View -> Layout -> Enable Layout Editing Mode. You can resize the panels there. To Insert Splitters, Right click the panel you want to put a splitter into, then click Replace UI Element, then one of the first few options will be Left/Right or Top/Bottom splitters.

Hope that helps.

Yes, there's gotta be something wrong with Album List. I have rather small music collection, 186 GB, and Album List freezes Foobar for minutes everytime I try to do something with it.

EDIT: Ok, only View by folder structure does this.

ok yes to clairfy this only happens in view by folder...

I am also using foo_dirwatch > even with dir watchh disabled its still painfully slow and often results in nothing happening other then a screen refresh of the albumlist window... please advise what extra info you require to fix the problem

also in my media library I have 2 directories...
c:\music and f:\music

not sure if that helps

also when viewing by other "views" the right click functionality is really quick and usable and switching between tabs is also faster.. it was extra slow before

hope it gets fixed otherwise I don't use the component in any other mode but by folder list.

----

also can the selection properties component please be updated to allow inline editing, I think this would be an awesome feature and quite intuitive if implemented nicely.. the fact that you can click in a field and get the typing cursor (not sure of correct name) makes you think you can type something in after you double click an entry when in fact nothing changes

we would also need to asume or decide that this is only possible for meta data and not location or general...

Album List's folder view will be made faster in the next version, thanks for reporting the issue.

thanks Peter, any idea what changed in the most recent versions to "provoke" this slow down? perhaps something similar to the decoder/encoder performance issues we saw when the project was moved to the latest visual studio?

thanks again > foobar community is the best, where else can I report a bug/issue and have it acknowledged by the dev and have something done about it  my hats off to your sir - happy new year make sure you have your share of drinks - we can all wait until the new year for the next beta

Ugh. Using right-click here is really conter-intuitive for me. I spent few days to find this message and realize that I could do all this nice things in properties dialog. Well, this may be pretty good way to go, but there should be hint in a dialog, that you could use right-click. Or a lot of users will miss, I guess.

Btw, one more feature request - could "Next track", "Previous track" buttons be added to properties dialog? It is usual for me to go through album's tracks and see is everything fine. And it is boring to do without ability to view properties for next/previous track.

Please see this topic (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=58771). Such buttons are most likely not going to be added.

Aha, thanks for pointing to!

But, I was unable to imagine what I should do to perform such task. So, again, UI is very non-intuitive. There definitely should be a hint that this is possible. At first glance "Properties" dialog look very dumb and non interesting, useful only for setting single value to multiple files.

And, after all, seems name "Properties" does not show up the nature and functionality of this dialog. Something like "View/Edit tags" is better, but is not best too, imho. (could not think up good name from scratch).

PS Thank you for all you efforts to make foobar2000 coolest player over all!

Nice updates. Is there a chance to make the artist in the playlist appear above the album title? Developers what do you say about this? It was a very nice layout with panels ui because you can see quicker the info bout the artist and the album. Also it would be nice to select the colour for the artist and the album separately the one from the other.

Sorry if it's been posted before, but can someone give me a quick guide to coding custom grouping, or point me in the direction of one please? I'm not sure how to specify what tags to group by and how to arrange the display of the tags in the header.

Is there a way, or are there any plans, to make a playlist that contains whatever is selected in album list?  I seem to remember this was possible in 0.8.3.  Kind of like how Facets works with the playlist Facet selection.  I know you can set the middle button to create a playlist of whatever you click in Album List, but that's not exactly what I'm going for.  I want to be able to have one playlist that always has what is selected in album list, so I don't have to worry about deleting playlists after I create them.

This is my very reason to use the facets plugin.
So yes

Yeah, but is there something like that for Album List?  When I'm not searching, I prefer to navigate with Album List rather than Facets, but I'm really missing a playlist that is tied to whatever is selected in Album List
