Spek 0.4

Spek is a spectrogram viewer aimed to help you with identifying bad transcodes and to analyse the quality of lossy encodes. Spek is a lightweight alternative to Adobe Audition and Audacity if all you want to do is to see the spectrogram.

Features:
  • Spek is free and open source software, it works under Windows and GNU/Linux.
  • Spek uses GStreamer to read audio files which means it supports most file formats you can think of.
  • Open files from the app, using drag and drop or from the file manager's "Open with..." menu.
  • Spectrogram is refreshed as you change the window size, the rulers are automatically re-aligned.
  • Basic audio properties are shown: format, bit rate, sample rate, bits per sample and the number of channels.
  • Save the spectrogram as a PNG image.

Doesn't work under Windows 2000 Pro SP4.

An error window pops up with a message stating something about an illegal procedure entry point in WS2_32.DLL

The earliest Windows version I tried is XP. Please file a bug here, I'll check it later. To be honest I didn't expect anyone to still use Win2000.

There is one thing you could do to this program that would interest me (and maybe other people in the forum).

Instead of using a linear scale for dB's like you (and almost every other program) do, I would be interested that you showed the colours according to the equal loudness curves.

Then, at least, you could actually say it is "acoustic".


The others have already told you what's wrong with the rest of your post. (Which means: This forum does *NOT* accept graphical representations of audio to talk about audio quality)

Tough crowd, eh? I was wondering why my flacs are showing odd spikes all the way to the top and each time I maximize/restore the location of the single pixel wide peaks changes. The same file in WAV does not have the spike/peak issue. Trying to figure this one out... any ideas? I understand this program is intended for advanced users but a how-to, hints and tips would probably be very useful for a lot of people! Hope you can help figure out my issue at hand, thanks.
