3rd Party Plugins - (fb2k) / Re: JScript Panel script discussion/help

The solution is not very elegant. Close fb2k and browse your profile folder.

You can either delete the entire js_smooth_cache folder and this means all thumbnails will be generated again from scratch.

OR

Browse inside the folder and enable the extra large icons view in Explorer. Find and delete the offending files manually.

Support - (fb2k) / Different DSD sample rates for same file on 2 devices
Last post by HornetMaX -
Hi all,

I have fb2k (2.1.3 x64) running on my PC, with 2 headphone amps copnnected via USB to the PC, a FiiO K7 and an SMSL DO400, each amp has its own ASIO driver. I play a DSD64 file that has a sample rate (from file details) of 2,822,400 Hz.

When I play it to the FiiO K7, the bottom line of the fb2k window shows: DSD64 | xxxx kbps | 2822400 Hz | stereo | ....

When I play it to the DO400, the bottom line of the fb2k window shows: DSD64 | xxxx kbps | 44100 Hz | stereo | .... and, on top, de DO400 display doesn't show the DSD tag, it shows PCM.

Normally the DO400 is capable of playing DSD64 at 2.822MHz and when I play the same file from a tablet connected to the DO400 vis USB using USB Audio Player Pro, the DO400 correctly shows the DSD tag on its display.

It seems the fb2k, for some reason, is converting to PCM when outputting to the DO400 (while it works fine with the FiiO, as FiiO volume know turns green to indicate it's receiving DSD).

Anything I need to configure ?

MP3 - General / Re: Resurrecting/Preserving the Helix MP3 encoder
Last post by Kraeved -
@Markuza97 People gather for a variety of reasons: from weddings and funerals to hobby groups like reenactors and submissives. To understand why, in the 21st century, against the backdrop of so-called progress, someone builds a castle without the use of modern tools or voluntarily surrenders to the will of a dominant partner, it is more far-sighted to show the humility of an indigenous researcher and unobtrusively ask questions, rather than heating up the situation with frantic cries like “who needs these remnants of the past when the world is on the verge of exploring Mars”. The latter reveals elementary communication skills, close to those of a spoiled child, who considers his limited horizons to be certain and the incomprehensible to be ridiculous and outrageous. By regularly pouring arrogance out of the cup of consciousness, you are more likely to fill the vacated space with the idea that life is a symphony of diverse forces. In particular, what we have here is not and will not be a hierarchy with profanum vulgus (mob) that begs Prometheus (developers) to share the fire (updates), but a horizontal exchange of opinions between mature enthusiasts with different priorities, which sometimes includes nitpicking and assertive pushbacks (as in the case of me and John), but ultimately it makes Helix MP3 encoder better. Focus on that, and you will feel better as well.

Vinyl / Re: Article: Vinyl records outsell CDs for the second year running
Last post by 2tec -
Oddly enough, it's not the older crowd I see at the record stores, It's younger people and more on the fringe. We have several record stores and the busiest one, Sloth Records, caters mostly to the alternative crowd. I think there's a point in life when people are all excited about collecting the music they like. Of course, all the labels rushed to reissue their collections in vinyl too. However, it seems to me that people aren't buying much mainstream vinyl but there's a lot of vinyl being sold that's coming from smaller labels. As well, there's a very large amount of vinyl resales going on at Discogs and eBay. Used record stores are doing ok too. Vinyl seems to have become a small sustainable niche for both artists and audience.

Me, I don't care, I rip and listen to anything, I'm not fussy. ;~)

There was a misunderstanding.
I meant no disrespect to developers - totally opposite.

By useless I meant exactly what you guys said above - small fun side project with little to no reward that will be used only by small amount of people.
Poor word choice from my side.

My post was directed to Kraeved. I got mad with this post.
What is it? @john33, are you ready to put your reputation on the line and walk out the window if this change does affect the quality...
only to get yelled at in return.

Instead of being happy that couple of developers are using their precious time to work on small project like this you are talking about John's reputation.
Member with rock solid reputation whose encoders have been pretty much standard for years.

Again, no disrespect to actual developers. I just don't like when "acting boss" tells actuals developers what to do and not to do.

Opus / Re: Opus .ogg vs .mp4 container?
Last post by nu774 -
As you may know, Opus in ISOBMFF has been supported by big players such as ffmpeg, chromium, and firefox before qaac added support for it. qaac is nothing here.

> Except for app support, is there a significant difference between these containers for an opus stream?

Ogg container is more popular for opus but ill-suited for video. That's why they had to standardize Opus in MPEG-TS and ISOBMFF.
Technically, as a container format, Ogg is more like MPEG-TS than MP4.
Ogg doesn't have global seek table which makes it sub-optimal for seeking (but not as bad as MP3).
If I remember correctly, (in the past) fb2k didn't support seeking Ogg files via HTTP because of this.
Ogg is more suitable for streaming or real-time recording. Also, it's simpler than MPEG family containers.

Opus / Re: xHE-AAC : The Death of OPUS?

The state of lossy music encoding is disheartening.
Developers are not robots or isolated nerds/geeks. If they can no longer sustain the efforts … pick up the skillsets where they left off and continue investing the same efforts they made. Not make a point of scolding them at every forum opportunity.

The absence of a loud and clear message expressing dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs is often mistaken for satisfaction. "People don't complain, so why bother?" And more often than not, I've seen development resume not because someone decided to dust off abandonware out of boredom, but because they faced the pain and showed empathy for those who reported how this or that change would make life easier or happier. Certainly, there are various ways to report: a hit between the eyes and a sugar-coated plea to name a few. Just as there are original editions of Mark Twain and Agatha Christie novels with words of their era like the N-word and orientals, and there are expurgated editions for a fragile, resentful mindset. For example, a few weeks ago I complained that Helix MP3 encoder, officially abandoned 20 years ago, was not capable of handling more than 16-bit input, and the miracle happened. God bless @Case for that.

Mod edit: Defused potentially offensive word.
