For those who helped here (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=77491) and here (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=77530&st=0&gopid=677710&#entry677710) (helping a n00b get normalization and inputs right), I found the source of the loud hum I was getting when recording through USB. Perhaps had I mentioned that I was next to a 42 inch plasma TV we wouldn't have been scratching our heads. I got home today with some ideas to try, the first of which was to turn the TV off and on. Now I have to either get persnickity about when to record or simply move the turntable elsewhere and never have it connected to the stereo. As it's more likely there will be some reason the TV is on than I'll want to actually be using the turntable for simply listening, I guess I'll be moving it. Ooo! For those times I just want to hear an LP I can always play the turntable through my laptop via USB as if I were recording, but instead send the signal wirelessly to my receiver like I do for all the other stuff I stream to it through the Airport Express and Airfoil.
Anyways, thanks again for all your input. Besides the practical help I have learned much.
Both your TV as well as your PC are integrated into your stereo system? If so a Sheath current filter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheath_current_filter) may help you to eliminate that hum if it comes from your antenna socket.
If not please ignore my post and a moderator may move it into the recycle bin.

Thanks for the tip! yes, I have my TV and stereo all together. People laughed when I ran Cat 5 cableing into every room and added one for the stereo. Back then I was not sure what I'd do with it but knew I'd be glad i did it. I know have it connected to a wireless base station (http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB321LL/A/AirPort-Express-AirTunes?fnode=MTY1NDA0Mg&mco=MTA4NTc4MTE) that has an audio out. So even when my laptop is not a part of the system by hardwire the system is part of the whole network.

I'm with you on that! Why separate your components if you don't have to. Back in the day of the "entertainment center" it all lived together in harmony.
At least now you know what the culprit is and you can work around it until you find a permenant solution.
