A few years ago, I had a program called dbPowerAmp which allowed me to hover the icon over a music file which then gave me information such as codec and its version number, MP3Gain information and such. It also had a number of other functions which I never used. I was wondering if there was a freeware program to run on Windows 7 which can help me do the same function without the other features of dbPowerAmp that I don't need. Thanks.

MediaInfo (http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en) would be another option, especially WRT Explorer integration, but I've never tried it with Win7.
foobar2000 doesn't change the tooltip you see when hovering over a file in Explorer. MediaInfo has an option to add that, although the info you get in the tooltip is not very detailed. You won't see what LAME version was used. MediaTab adds more complete MediaInfo output to a tab in the Properties window for a file and will have the info you want, but requires several clicks instead of a mouseover.
dBpoweramp reads this, among a boatload of other info. It's not free, but it's worth it. Converts just about anything to just about anything.

Thanks for the suggestion. dbPowerAmp was indeed the first program that I thought of since I had it in my computer when it used to be freeware (many years back). I just left a post there asking if that feature remains active even after the 21 day trial period is over (hopefully without nagging). That is exactly what I'm looking for since I also wish to identify the version of the encoding. Thanks for everyone who has posted. Anyone else have any freeware ideas?
