ogg or aac(mp4).  neither are really worth the effort in terms of either: bitrate savings or quality.

AC3 is already compressed, i.e. 'lossily' encoded. See http://dolbysearch.dolby.com/tech/ac3flex.html

If you have enough space to keep the AC3 audio, do so.

DSPguru´s AACmachine.

It allows you to convert to AAC. Then, you´ll need MP4ui to convert it to MP4.

Yes. If i get the impression that the user has little or no background information on what he's about to do, i'll try to point out the possible downside first. Based on that, the user can re-evaluate his situation (i hope).

That would be essentially pointless, because both are container formats.

Now, are you wishing to mux AAC (MPEG4 audio) with AVI?

In that case, yes, it´s doable, but not recommended, because of limitations in the AVI format. You should use MP4 for MPEG4 audio (AAC) + MPEG4 video (DivX, XviD...). And you can use the MPEG4ip tools kjempen recommended for that purpose.
