Title: Site reorganisation / move
Post by: Garf on 2014-05-26 18:00:59
Hi all,

I will be reorganizing HA and related sites such as the wiki soon. Expect some temporary outages during that time. We will likely also move the main site address from hydrogenaudio.org to hydrogenaud.io (done!). I'll post a note when the move is over.

This should make it a bit easier to update parts of the site separately from each other.

Thanks! Does the site has a Twitter where we can check for the status once you start modifying stuff? :-)

If I could figure out how to Google something like 'io' without getting ten million responses, I would.
Make that 171,000,000 responses.

Sometimes Wikipedia is your friend (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.io), rather than good ol' Google.

Anyway, very good news. Thrilled to see work towards the future of this - at least for me - beloved site. Thanks Garf and anyone else involved.

Are you asking why it won't work yet or why the domain will move?

It won't work yet because I haven't moved the HA forums part of the site.

We're moving to .io because the .org domain is still owned by Dibrom and he's increasingly hard to get hold off, and I need to be able to change our DNS configuration. If I can't reach him in a month or two the .org domain will stop functioning.

Hi Garf!

Smooth migration so far: compliments!

Have you considered issuing 301 HTTP response codes for old URLs so that Google can maintain indexes, page rank and everything else?

Are you under Apache? This can be done quite easily with some .htaccess magik...

Hi!
No I was looking at the site, but with Firebug and the redirect responses just flickered for a moment before disappearing (Firebug clears the NET panel when you change domain). With IE I was able to check in a more reliable way and everything was OK! Just a mistake from me, sorry.

Do you plan to redirect again to http://hydrogenaud.io (http://hydrogenaud.io) later on? That would be cool, IMHO... I always found the "www" totally useless and I tend to get rid of it in my domains...

The latest Firefox has a Developer->Network thing that may be useful.

I'm not planning to change this part of the setup. There's also wiki., which is actually on a seperate server now, so the distinction makes some sense...to me.

The DNS is now updated so the hydrogenaudio.org stuff leads directly to the new server.

There's still a whole bunch of links *inside* the forum, like posts, that will break if the old server disappears (and the .org DNS stops working). Can't do much about those :-/

This seems like a rather drastic move. Was there a dispute over the old domain name? Is he planning to point hydrogenaudio.org at a porn site or just let it expire? I assume that he refuses to give you control of it.

It would be an option, but might be tricky to get right. I guess it's not that important.

I'm the last person you should ask as I haven't heard from him in more than 2 years. The server that provides the NS for hydrogenaudio.org is going away. If I do nothing then in <2 months the site simply disappears overnight. I'd rather use that time to give the people time to update their links.

I'm only a relative novice at databases, but I would think the following statement (adapted to whatever database system you use) should be sufficient:
Code: [Select]
update `TABLE` set `FIELD` = replace(FIELD, 'hydrogenaudio.org/forums', 'hydrogenaud.io/forums');

I'm surprised that you didn't also register hydrogenaudio.io. I doubt that everyone is going to remember the odd URL if/when hydrogenaudio.org goes flatline.

What happened to the guy who controls the old domain name? Is he living in a cave now? Nobody could knock on his door and ask "What's up"? You _really_ don't want that name to expire and then get pointed to some generic ad site.

Weird. If you do wrestle control of hydrogenaudio.org, do you change everything back??

*shrug* they'll have updated their links, Google will have spidered the new domain and knows about the move because the redirects are in place, so searching will also point to the right place.

He has other passions in life now. We did hear something back finally after I stressed the importance, so who knows, maybe we can keep the old links working. In any case I'll keep the new domain as the main one, though I might make it "hydrogenaud.io" instead of "www.hydrogenaud.io" as someone else here already suggested.

My thx to all those who keep Foobar2000 and the forums working ;^_^;

Foobar2000 is the BEST audio Player on the WHOLE Planet.

1)  Cool and unique name  "Foobar2000"
2)  Cool icons/logo
3)  Light weight and efficient programing ( Thx Peter ;;^_^;;) (ie NOT bloatware like some apps whose names I will not mention  )
4)  The plugin system, especially all the VideoGameMusic plugins I love so much ;;^_^;;  ( TY so much Kode54)
5) anything else I can't think of at this second ;D.

I don't think we need to change the logo, it's not like the old one had .org at the end.

What *would* be nice though is a reworked favicon that has high-res icons for devices like tablets and high-dpi phones.

HA is mostly unchanged, though the DNS setup on .io should be better. I don't think you can notice that past the first load, though.

foobar2000, the wiki etc are on updated software.

But I really think it's just the backend server having a faster CPU and more RAM, spitting out the page faster.

The problem is that there are so many different sizes.

Anyway, I got the logo from the Wiki and pulled it trough http://realfavicongenerator.net (http://realfavicongenerator.net), great stuff, really. The following should be added to the <head> section of the pages.

Code: [Select]

Plus the zip with all the files: http://www.audiograaf.nl/misc_stuff/hydrog...io-favicons.zip (http://www.audiograaf.nl/misc_stuff/hydrogenaudio-favicons.zip) All except the favicon.ico file are usable (because of alpha channel-constraints on .ico files) You might want to consider using the PNG version with transparancy instead of the white background that is used now.

I have updated all the links to *hydrogenaudio.org I could find on en.wikipedia.org although there may be bad links on other language versions of Wikipedia.

It was essentially a search for hydrogenaudio.org and replacing all instances with hydrogenaud.io (except where it's just the publisher name in a citation, where I changed it to hydrogenaudio and dropped the .org)

Well done for migrating all the hosted resources well in advance of hydrogenaudio.org closing.

We transfered the hydrogenaudio.org DNS, and that's still propgating. That said, both old and new server are pointing to the right IPs, so I'm a bit surprised it's not working for you.

The good news is that hydrogenaudio.org links will keep working for the forseeable future as we now control the domain again.

Good to hear you now have control over the domain! If it's propagation then it's just a matter of time...

Sorry to dig up this old thread but...

It looks like hydrogen.audio is already taken, sadly: http://www.hydrogen.audio/ (http://www.hydrogen.audio/)

"Is Hydrogen Renewable" it says. Yep, just push the Repeat button on your player.
