Which CD DAE software is the most accurate for Mac OS X?

.
- I inserted a (classical) cd and XLD displays the track info correctly. However, when I click on "Get CD Track Names", the info changes and the names now include Japanese (?) characters. Are there different databases being used ?

First impressions are very positive.
Has that CD been in your computer before? In iTunes? Or, in Max using the iTunes Metadata script? If so, what you first saw is the tags from Gracenote CDDB which is what iTunes uses. Apple pays Gracenote a fee. Max, XLD(?), and most others use Musicbrainz (free). Once a bunch of metadata is associated with a CD the OS remembers it. In your case, when you had it get names the previous were replaced. So, yes, there is in effect two different databases used.

I wonder if Max's script can be modified for XLD?

I have created a comparison for three CD rippers that use CDParanoia on the Mac.  This comparison is in no way a definitive comparison as the feature sets of these applications constantly change. Please contact me if any information appears inaccurate or you feel a crucial feature has been omitted.  I attempted to list the features in an unbiased manner.  All these applications offer several audio codecs which are listed in HA's 2008 ripping/encoding polls which confirms the most the popular ones are offered.  I intentionally did not list the audio codecs because the focus for this comparison is the DAE capabilities on the Mac.

Today XLD added a new feature to recognize if a CD is in the AccurateRip DB before ripping is started.  This will  give the user the option to use the burst rip mode vs. the CDParanoia mode which takes longer to rip. If the users CD condition is fine they could rely on the AccurateRip results to determine if one should rerip using the CDParanoia mode.  Another great feature added quickly by the developer!

Notice [AR] in the top of XLD application window in front of the album name.  This indicates that this CD is in the AccurateRip DB.

From the other thread on this subject, I think it's not yet entirely clear that XLD actually disables the drives cache.

Just an update on Mac DAE.  Today sbooth the developer of Max posted on his forum that he is working on a CD ripper with following features:

    * Drive read offset support
    * AccurateRip support
    * Multiple metadata sources [via plugins], including MusicBrainz, FreeDB and iTunes
    * Plugin-based encoders

He also posted that he has currently completed maybe 70% of the features, and plans a public beta soon.

I can place a comment in notes area of the Mac CD Ripper Comparison that some HA members question this features effectiveness.

Their seems to be some disagreement if the disable cache is effective in XLD.  I am in no way an expert about DAE.  My goals are to learn as much as I can about this subject and help inform the Mac community.  We must find a way to test this feature in a way the majority can agree on.  Unfortunately I did not have the technical expertise to devise such a test and must rely on the help of other members of HA to accomplish this.  Any help to reach this objective would be appreciated.

4. Can the the error log report be trusted in XLD?

Thank you for answers and help.  500 plus CD's to rip!
Here's a damaged disk I just ripped where the log report shows no problems on some tracks the AR does not show as a match:

This post is not correct. 8 and 0 look pretty indistinguishable in font XLD uses in it's log.
I mistook the two tracks that reported 8 errors for 0 errors.
The log matches AR results

Here's a damaged disk I just ripped where the log report shows no problems on some tracks the AR does not show as a match

For the sake of experiment could you rip the disc again with cache disabled (allegedly)

...especially since the PX-230A is a caching drive.

Time for new glasses...

The 8's were hiding in the crossed 0's (who on earth invented those things?) in the XLD log.

I'm doing come cahe on and off comparisons now.

Here's a damaged disk I just ripped where the log report shows no problems on some tracks the AR does not show as a match:

You didn't use "test before copy" on this rip.

Surely forgiveable/understandable if you have "Only when the track does not exist in AccurateRip DB" checked ?

XLD updated via automatic update today with some interesting new features.  I posted all the XLD updates since 2008/08/22 because the website has not been updated since then and after you automatically download the new version of XLD you won't have any record of  these updates or added features until the website is updated.

Code: [Select]
Version 20080907:
Added feature to fix a wrong offset of the existing files using AccurateRip database
You can detect and fix an offset from "Detect Offset" and "Save with Offset Correction..." in File menu, after opening a file (with cuesheet) that you want to fix.
Separated drift errors from skip errors in cdparanoia statistics
Added option to treat AccurateRip mismatch as an inconsistency in log
Modified loading method of Sparkle.framework to support OSX 10.3
Version 20080906:
Sorted character encoding pop-up menu by alphabetical order
Version 20080905:
XLD now shows "[AR]" string in the titlebar of the window when a disc is available in AccurateRip DB
Version 20080904:
Added option to avoid testing when the track exists in AccurrateRip DB
Supported creating a cue sheet for separated track files
You can choose type in the save dialog. Note that currently XLD can't read this type of cue sheet.
Version 20080902:
Fixed a problem in ALAC decoder
Version 20080830:
Added option to test before copy
Version 20080829:
Added option to veryfy suspicious sectors
Version 20080828:
Added option to save a log file automatically
Improved progress view to show a speed and remaining time
Version 20080827:
XLD now automatically recognizes inserted/ejected CD
Supported embedding album art in WavPack encoder
Fixed to ask output directory if the default directory is not writable
Version 20080826:
Fixed to report correctly in case AccurateRip doesn't have informations for all tracks
Version 20080825:
Fixed several bugs in cdparanoia routine according to the latest release
Fixed UTF-8 NFD issue when looking up Gracenote database
Fixed MusicBrainz query failure on PPC Mac
Version 20080824:
Fixed a problem that XLD sometimes failed to find a CD in AccurateRip database
Version 20080823:
Added feature to calculate an AccurateRip hash for the existing files
Choose "Check file with AccurateRip" from the File menu.
Fixed again an AccurateRip hash calculation for the first track
Sorry for confusion... I hope this will be the solution...
Version 20080822a:
Fixed an AccurateRip hash calculation for the first track with pregap
Version 20080822:
Fixed an AccurateRip hash calculation for the first and last track
Improved tag editor
Supported automatic update using Sparklelong

Yep. One sweet feature that is.

I think the developer deserves a great deal of credit for the nearly daily updates, all of which are to add genuinely useful features.

Yes and no. Yes, if AR reports that everything checks out OK.

No, if you have problems like you do in your log and want to confirm that they are truly error free.

Try ripping the tracks in question again with "test before copy" and "verify suspicious sectors" enabled. I predict that the log will show a mismatch between the test and copy CRCs on the problem tracks.

This is not a caching issue, I am certain.

No sh*t. I have never seen such user driven (or anything otherwise!) development. Amazing. And to do it smartly (do test/copy if track not in AR) and functionally/individual preference (have as option for how log is worded re: AR inconsistencies) is damn near elegant.

Now for some clarification re: drive cache defeating (for whatever it's relevancy on modern drives) and handling of fancy discs (Super/enhanced/whatever).

And then there's that.

The pace this application is being developed is truly amazing.  Great Work!

Did we determine if the  "Only when the track does not exist in AccurateRip DB" setting takes into account the very real possibility of having a different pressing from what's in the database???

It doesn't take that into account. That is one of the problems with this option.

If you want to rely on the AR results first and foremost, then it's probably better to burst rip, then check the AR results.

Is it realistically possible for different pressings to have some tracks that match ? If it's not then it should be obvious what the situation is unless you have a disc with 100% of the tracks damaged.

The handling of "fancy discs" (enhanced CDs with videos, photos or any other extras included) is definitely a problem with XLD. It can't deal with them at all. XLD hangs during the "detecting pregap" stage."

Both xACT and cdparanoia III 9.8 are able to deal with enhanced discs, so I'm sure that XLD can be made to work with these as well.

As for caching, well, I'm still waiting for someone to prove a caching problem with cdparanoia/XLD. I'm not saying that it can't happen, just that no one has shown it to be a demonstrable problem -- and I've been comparing EAC and cdparanoia III 9.8 rips for more than half a decade, using both caching and non-caching drives.

It is possible. I have seen it. I have several discs of which I own a couple of different pressings. On at least two titles, a few of the tracks in common have identical CRCs, while the other tracks produce entirely different CRCs. I'm not sure how common this phenomenon is, but it can and does occur.

Just to be clear - My post above on the log not showing errors while AR showed a mismatch was my error in mistaking the 8's for 0's in XLD's log.
The log and AR's results match in this instance ---- My mistake.

Indeed! The XLD developer has done an amazing job. He not only took Mac ripping out of the dark ages, but the  *daily* improvements he has been making to XLD are truly a wonder to behold. I really cannot thank him enough for everything he has done (and continues to do).

I notice an incorrect entry on your ripper comparison chart: xACT does NOT have a "verify suspicious sectors" option, nor does it verify them.

Also, xACT does query Freedb (you can see it on the log), although it will not actually title the tracks on output. One problem with xACT is that the developer made it a "run only" application, so you cannot edit the app. I believe this may be a violation of the cdparanoia GPL, but what do I know?
