QuickTime 6 final released

Apple released today QuickTime 6 final, avaible for download from here.

Sound codecs supported are:

24-bit integer
32-bit floating point
32-bit integer
64-bit floating point
AAC (MPEG-4 Audio)
ALaw 2:1
IMA 4:1
MACE 3:1
MACE 6:1
MS ADPCM (decode only)
QDesign Music 2
Qualcomm PureVoice
ULaw 2:1

So you can encode mpeg-4 video with this?  Hmm, wonder how it would compare with xvid or divx.

Yeah, no mp3?  Apple couldn't afford the licence, maybe?  Personally I think one would have to be insane to use quicktime as a standard media player anyway.  But possibly its improved I suppose.  Still I will likely not bother trying;  Quicktime has hosed my system in the past...

It's playing my mp3's just fine, but who uses it for mp3 anyway? mpeg-4 and streamed aac, thats the hook.

It plays MP3 perfectly fine, CBR and VBR. (Never tested MP1/2 though)

But it doesn't encodes MP3 due to some kind of bizar agreement Apple has with Qdesign. (I.E: Offer better support to Qdesign's proprietary encoder)

Anyway, you can encode QuickTime .mov using MP3 as audio. All you need is Discreet (Terran) Media Cleaner + MPEG charger. ($$$$$$)
This .mov will play on any QuickTime 3.0+.
