Click / Pop when using Apple Audio Unit Adaptor

Mac Studio Apple M2 Max
Foobar2000 2024-05-23
Using FabFilter Pro-Q 3 via Apple Audio Unit Adaptor (other plugins in pic)

Hearing a click or pop in the first second or so in every track. Buffer length does not affect it

Happy to help further diagnose.

I replicated your DSP chain and I don't get any click or pop. I'm using a Fiio KA13 dongle.

Try using another output device and see if you get the same. May be specific to that device. If so, see if there is a firmware update for it that may fix the problem.

Other thing to try is remove everything except the fabfilter plugin.

Using a MOTU 24AI over ethernet. No other audio app introduces pop or clicks.

I'll try your suggestion and report back.

Still happening on latest version and on different hardware (Topping DX3Pro and Motu 24AI).

Single tone playback will make it more clear to spot.

Only happens on manual track change / start - so more than likely a Foobar problem.

Really, really annoying. Removing Apple Audio Unit Adaptor resolves issue.

Still an issue in 15/10.

Is there anything I can provide to help resolve?

Happens on multiple interfaces (ethernet and USB) and is resolved completely by removing the AU plugin

I don't have Mac but it's universal truth that you will hear a glitch if there is a discontinuity in the waveform. A simple manual track change has a high chance of introducing clicks as you have a glitch every time track change takes place outside zero crossing. The higher the level difference between waveform at the end of a track and at the start of new track, the louder the pop. And DSPs can amplify that.
At least Windows version has an option to enable smooth fader in output preferences, it allows forcing all sudden transitions to go smoothly through silence and that way remain 100% glitchless.

If there is no smooth fader to save the day, you could try if configuring the Pro-Q 3 to flat settings makes foobar2000 behave the same way as when no AU is used. That would also confirm what the problem is.

Thanks for the reply. The pop/click is around 1 second into the track, so it's a buffer problem somewhere

I guess, something working like foo_dsp_pregap could help here.
