"Clicks and jitter" on Vista SP2 64-bit

Good day, everybody.

I'm experiencing a problem with foobar2000 playback after installing Vista Service Pack 2 (64-bit version). Whenever I play music with foobar, some sort of clicks are heard. It's like foobar skips several audio samples from time to time. Nothing loud, but clearly audible. The same tracks play well in WMP. I've tried increasing the buffer length, changing the output bit-depth, putting the Resampler in and out of the processing chain... nothing helps. I use foobar2000 v0.9.6.5. Downgrading to 0.9.6.3 didn't change anything, too. I even upgraded my audio drivers to the latest version. Didn't help.

Does anyone has the same problem?

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Best regards,
Marat

A good start would be to use the codebox here and paste in your component list. Preferences > Components > Copy.

Also, what if any dsp's are active.

There are no active DSP's.

Also, I believe the problem may be related to HDD activity somehow. It seems that the "clicks" are more frequent when the hard drive is active.

It may be a combination of the revamped sound subsystem in Vista as well as the sound card drivers. I got the same thing when I used to use Vista SP1 32-bit, and I still get it with my beta build of Windows 7. It happens most of the time when I am playing back lossless files, and I tend to concur with your conjecture.

Have you tried updating your IDE and/or chipset drivers?

Vista is a huge hard drive thrasher. It's always doing something to the hard drive such as doing a System Restore almost every minute or defraging. Also foobar2000 can sometimes be a buffer hog with Mp3s. When I used that horrid OS, i noticed foobar2000 would skip if I started to install a app or driver that triggers Vista to do System Restore.

Yes, I have the latest version installed.

Well, the sad part is that other players (at least the WMP, which I believe to be inferior to foobar) don't have that issue. And the "clicks" are still there, although not as frequent, when the HDD sits still (I have System Restore and HDD swap files disabled, so Vista doesn't load the HDD in background so much).

Have you used the DPC Latency tool on your copy of Vista?

No, I've never heard about this tool before. Thanks, I'll give it a try.

And there's a thread about some Gigabyte's P35 motherboards having problems with latency (as whown by the tool you've mentioned). I happen to have one of those. Got to check this thing as soon as possible.

WASAPI-exclusive fixes this for me. I'm only using x64 SP1 though. Don't know about SP2.

Well, it turns out that my Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L motherboard was the cause of the problem. I ran the DPC Latency Check, and it showed a horrifying 7000-8000 µs in average. Updating the BIOS solved the problem: I'm now under a 500 µs at all times, and no clicks are heard so far.

Thanks so much, sld! Your suggestion was very helpful.

Heh. And foobar2000 successfully detects more broken systems! It's MAGIC!
