Errors Ripping CD Collections with EAC

I have used EAC for years to rip audio CD's with few problems, but I need to get past a particular issue that has bugged me for a long time:  when I try to rip collections, I get errors, especially on the last few tracks, as if the drive has trouble accessing the outermost bands.  This doesn't happen on "Best of" or "Greatest Hits" type albums, but nearly always does on larger collections.  Any idea why this happens?  I use pretty convention settings, e.g., secure mode, etc., and I use an old Prexwriter Premium drive.

BTW, I can rip these with no problem using batch mode.
