Title: Where to begin
Post by: scottder on 2004-06-07 21:34:23
I have become more curious over time how music in it's digital form works (CDs, mp3....all of that), is there a good place to begin understanding this, a  good book or website that will help me understand how digital music works.

I know this is kind oif vauge, but some starting places would be great.

Perhaps this is useful: http://www.audiocoding.com/wiki/ (http://www.audiocoding.com/wiki/)

This wiki covers a wide range of formats and concepts.

See also http://grahammitchell.net/writings/vorbis_intro.html (http://grahammitchell.net/writings/vorbis_intro.html) which gives an introduction into Ogg Vorbis, but offers also some general information.

I'm an undergrad physics major, and I was wondering if anyone would know of any sources/books that deal with a theoretical/mathematical treatment of digital audio? I'm new to this, so if anyone knows a good primer that would be great.

If you are a physics major, then you will probably have to start from the beginning..  Digital audio / video requires some understanding of mathematics specially formulated for digital representation..  I suggest that you pick up a book about Digital Signals Processing.

A good starting point imo is: "Principles of Digital Audio" (4th edition) by Ken C. Pohlmann

You should have some knowledge of mathematics, physics and electrical engineering. The book covers a broad range of topics.
