Do people still recognise the r3mix settings as the optimal settings?

No.  Click on the Sticky topic at the top of the General - (MP3) board titled "List of recommended LAME settings".  You will find the answer there, the recommended LAME setting now is "--alt-preset standard".

Edit:  He doesn't have many posts, but maybe it IS a joke, who knows?  The smiley may be showing sarcasm.
WARNING:  Changing of advanced parameters might degrade sound quality.  Modify them only if you are expirienced in audio compression!
