Title: Error: "Bad allocation" on Win Vista Bd. 5381.1
Post by: floffelos on 2006-05-21 23:45:08
First of all I read the similar thread posted previously, but since it was several months ago for a different build, and since you now state that Foobar is able to run in Vista, I make a new thread here. Flame if you believe me to be ignorant and stupid.

I am running a Sony Vaio VGN-A690 laptop, 100gb, 1gb ram.
I've tried installing foobar2000 0.9.1 and 0.9.2.beta3, "regularly" and with "run as administrator"-credentials, same thing happens.

Install runs smoothly, although it ends before the process bar reaches the end, if you know what I mean, but without errors, so I assume that the last part of the install process is really quick, thus my eye does not catch the latter part of the install. I still get an "installation successfull" message.

Now, Foobar starts nicely, all looks good. But as soon as I try to add a music file, any what so ever, or try to play any file, the program shuts down and gives me an "Unhandled Exception: Bad Allocation" error.
Once this followed by a C++ runtime error.

Do you have to "tweak" any settings for Foobar to run in Vista?

I really appreciate any help with this, I googled around, but there are not many ppl experiencing this error, and I will starve to death without Foobar on Vista. Since iTunes/WiMP11 will be real resource hogs in Vista, Foobar is my last hope. I am trying to learn to use VLC as a "default audio player" but let me tell you all it's hard once you've gotten used to excellency.

Thanks for any help or suggestions, take care!

try xp compatibility mode, although i'm not sure this will help.

Offtopic: recently i tried this build of VISTA (without foobar), tweaked a little (disabled ~70% of services) and still find XP sp2 2x faster. If iTunes/WiMP11 are real resource hogs for you - go to xp

Tried it. Nope. Same thing.
But it gave me some ideas, I'll play around with some settings in windows and in foobar as well (I can still run the program, it's when I try to play music that it crashes.)

Actually, on a clean install, I found Vista environment to be faster than XPSP2, but I guess some apps like photoshop and iTunes will give me headaches.

Thanks

I don't know anything about Vista, but if that's the case, have you tried playing with the output settings? e.g., try ASIO or KS instead of DirectSound?

Check. Didn't work. Come on you guys! People in other forums are trying to convert over to the dark, murky, "Winamp5"-side... I don't want to venture in to the dark territories of Winamp no more!!!

Seriously though. Appreciate the suggestions.

Vista is an unreleased operating system and not officially supported.  I'm afraid it would really be next to impossible, both legally and for technical reasons, to provide you assitance.

I would first go through your beta testing contacts at Microsoft and report a regression/third-party product incompatability and see if they have anything to recommend, either to you as an end user or Peter as a developer.

I'm using the public beta version of Vista 5384.4...

And this problem still happens. I did a fresh install of 0.9.2 and still the BANG!!!

Any ideas?
