I finally got your syntax to work partially,

Your syntax; $if($stricmp(%album artist%,Various),%album%,%album% '('%date%')')

My syntax; $if($stricmp(%album%,Various),%album% '('%date%')',%album%)

this groups them all properly, but alas no date at all.
