Post by: magicgoose on 2018-04-25 17:33:08
As requested in https://hydrogenaud.io/index.php/topic,115869.new.html#info_956270
I am using a sample from "Perdition City" album by Ulver which contains very loud ~18kHz tones.

My log:

I am leaving it at 8/8 as it is really painful to listen at the volume where I can confidently hear that tone. :/
This was surprisingly hard, and I found that I hear it now only with my left ear (used to be able to hear it with both ears back in the days).
If someone wants **/16 then I'd rather give up. I think someone younger will do this test a lot easier if they want to prove the point that sometimes there is some noticeable content above ~16kHz. And I'm apparently near the point of being too old to be able to do this.

for those who didn't listen the album: the other part of the album is not like that, it's only this part that is so dumb :D

Thanks for sharing.

Listening at pathological levels constitutes cheating in my book.  Besides you could be hearing intermodulation distortion.

Regardless, you made your point: this piece of "dumb" "music" would need more than ~16kHz of BW in order not to lose sound quality for those who are young and have questionable taste. ;)

Some people that I know do listen at similar levels when not testing. That's a silly thing to do, I agreeā€¦ but it happens.

As I said, for the most part this album is not as bad.

FWIW, my own conclusion is: for normal music and for my age I shouldn't bother with these highest frequencies, as when it reaches the point where I can hear them, I'd rather not hear them. :D

Agreed.
