Separating foobar2000 sound processing from Windows stuff.

I've heard that there's a way of sort-of bypassing Windows sound processing and making sure that what foobar2000 plays is what gets send out of the sound card. Whatever this thing is I think it started with W and it meant that even if you mute the sound in Windows, foobar2000 keeps on pumping out tunes. Anyone know what that might be? I'm sure I won't be able to tell the difference but I'm just interested.
