Which Lossless codec for my combination of clients...?

Hi all!

I have been going round and round in circles for months at 'other' web forums, but thankfully I've found, what I think, are experts here at hydrogenaudio.

I have a 1TB NAS (Buffalo Terastation) running Twonky (so no transcoding to LPCM).
I have various client devices, but primarilly the Sony Playstation 3 and Roku Soundbridge M2000 and M1001 devices.  My AV processor etc is Meridian Audio G-Series based gear - so I like my top end stuff and good quality audio.

I want to remain with Twonky as it does a very good job at serving my chosen video and, more importantly, my picture collection.

Disk space isn't an issue and I am itching to rip my entire collection to a lossless format to free up physical space.

I have discovered that the Roku plays .flacs brilliantly.  The PS3 doesn't and reports Unsupported Data.
The PS3 will play AAC, but not lossless (m4a).  The Roku plays the AAC lossless fine.  I have been playing with dbPowerAmp as my ripping s/w, closely tied with Exact Audio Copy (EAC) to get confident rips.

I am confident that the Roku will play pretty much whatever is thrown at it, but I don't know what single format to rip to if I am to get best compatibility amongst my clients.

Has anybody cracked this nut with the PS3 and a reliable playback of lossless audio?  Are there any tricks to do with metadata / filenames etc, that I should be aware of?

Any advice gratefuly received.

Cheers
Pete

i'm sure if enough people asks they will add flac support, like they did with wmv, divx and xvid for example

Thanks.

Lots of people have been asking for the last 12 months.  Where's a good place to keep asking?

I don't think it'll happen.  Until it does, are there any work arounds?

i doubt there's any. ps3 isn't really a mod platform. install linux on it, but then you can say hello to gaming

Original Message Follows:

Consumer Name: Peter Miller

Message from Consumer:
Dear sir or madam,

My PS3 is fantastic! It is the central hub of my digital home and I have it connected in fullHD on a
102" screen. Did I mention that it was Fantastic?

However, what is letting me down (and Sony, I believe) is the lack of Lossless Audio playback codecs
in the firmware. I am unable to play WMA, FLAC, AAC, OGG Vorbis lossless file formats.

Could you please ask your development team to give this due consideration as I believe sony are
missing a real trick by not supporting those of us who appreciate quality. The PS3 is a quality
piece of kit. When combined with quality audio processing components, it could be SO much more.

All of my media is on a NAS connected over gigabit ethernet. I believe that playback / streaming of
audio from a USB / local HDD is usually assumed to be the main storage method, but particular
attention to the growing market of NAS and home servers really ought to be in your considerations.

If appropriate, please keep me informed of progress on my request and I'd be happy to beta test any
new firmware for you!

Kind regards
Peter Miller

What a waste of time.

I bet the American representatives don't even have the email addresses of the people in Japan who could actually do something about this!

You need to find a Japanese friend of a friend of a friend who knows someone who works for Sony in Japan.

(I'm assuming the real work happens in Japan - I could be wrong).

Cheers,
David.

AAC and Ogg Vorbis aren't "lossless file formats".
