How can I downmix a 2ch mp3 to mono losslessly with ffmpeg or lame?

I'll try to reencode them in mono to see if they still transparent.

Is this a stereo encode of mono material? If so then if it was encoded in joint stereo then it is already encoded very efficiently. You wouldn't have gotten much smaller files at the same quality, or significantly better quality at the same file size, if you had encoded as mono.
