Title: ABX procedure project
Post by: patate91 on 2017-09-13 21:16:15
I'm on my quest to share the ABX comparator and knowledge to my fellow on audio forums

I'm an active on two ''audiophile'' forum and I' m planning to prepare a tutorial to use foobar2000 and the abx comparator.

I know there's already a good procedure but I don't want to copy it without the owner's agreement.

I know people will have to convert the music their own but I would also be able to provide files, like Ethan Winer provide on his web site. I have a couple of tests idea and I hope I could at least help a couple of forum users.

I sent a facebook message to Ethan and A. Kruger to get help + a comment on archimago's publication, but as always with facebook the message are not seen.

Someone here wants to help or we could organise ourselve to publish on a lot of forums at the same time?

Let say I'll try to provide the tools to debunk some myths. There's always endless debate on those forums. I'll try the best I can to give help for those who wants

Forgot to mention that I would like it as a ''trainning ear'' tool

Good goal and good luck.  I guess "for those who wants" is the operative phrase here.  My experience on those forums is that industry "experts" and charter members don't like their belief systems being challenged (and they enjoy the endless debate).  You'll get a number of comments of the "ABX is not the right way to listen to music" variety.

Thanks, there's a lot of informations available but it's scattered all around the web.

I have to admit that I also like to debate endlessly XD

e?

Really? Must have been the wrong Krueger.

My FB ID is Arny Krueger, and my profile picture is the same caricature that one sees associated with my name in other places including here.

If you know of a good ABX procedure, please post a link to it.

Did you check out the forum sticky notes on ABX around here?

Comments?

The informations here is good, but some people will need a more step by step procedure. The wiki link to the head-fi forum with a good step by step but again I don't want to copy someone else work with his/her approval.

And yes I sent my Facebook message to you, since we're not friend I think you won't necessarily receives a notification.

I think this is the link I asked for:  https://www.head-fi.org/threads/setting-up-an-abx-test-simple-guide-to-ripping-tagging-transcoding.655879/

I actively looked all over my FB account and activity, as well as Messenger for anything that even vaguely matched what you said.  I came up dry.

It is also a good hearing testing tool.

Repeating tests that used to be slam dunks have told me all I needed to know about the consequences of age (70 years)  and various age-related medical issues including stroke, brain hemorrhage and chemotherapy on my hearing.  Chemotherapy-related neuropathy is IME the worst of the lot, and not by a little.  However, it seems to be a little reversible.

Long story short there are a goodly number of well-known Golden Ears who are contemporaries of mine, and you can guess the rest.

Well, placebophilia seems to age well. It may even be assisted by dementia! ;-)

Here's my first draft.

You'll see that I went with a step by step procedure - you can read, you can do it.

I'm open to comments, and corrections.

Note that I also need to source the audio files. That's the reason I'm trying to reach Ethan, Ian Shepperd or Archimago. For all who are interested to help it's welcome.

It might be a good idea to add "for Windows users", as it is completely based on foobar2000.

I'll add it.

If there's a way to do it with Ubuntu I can see if I can build the procedure and add it as an attachement

Foobar2k works fine on Linux using wine.

I think some people don't like what I'm doing or don't like when I ask (real) questions. I got harassed by an AK member. I feel that I profondly hurted him, that's sick.

Welcome to the real world.

At one time in early Y2K I called the Michigan State Police because the ABX-hating golden ear audiophiles on rec.audio.opinion had threatened and at least partially executed a plan to send me child pornography in an email and then report me to the local police, the State Police, and the FBI for possessing child pornography.  My strategy was to get law enforcement on my side. The MSP officer came to my house (can't email it to them, right?) reviewed the long pornographic email and its graphic attachments and said that it was not actionable because it was not certainly children, probably just young adults that still looked like children

I moved on.

The comment was: "They did this over stereo equipment?". The hardened officer was incredulous.

There is big money and big egos behind this thing.

Haha.  Just to ensure that in case you went to the cops, it wouldn't backfire ... unless it was sent from some jurisdictions, where "that still looked like children" is enough to qualify as child pornography, then.

I guess FBI did some ABX test on photos of real children and fake children and determined that you are innocent.

The MSP said that the guys they actually go after typically have thousands of videos and pix, and just an unsolicited email just wasn't worth it, and would get laughed out of court.

Unfortunately it worked a bit more effectively against me, but my defense reaction was pretty much the same as yours.

@Arnold I hope it won't go that far.

I know this is real world but I decided to think that everyone are equals, smarts and caring, most of the time they are, we just have to listen. I know this is utopian, but I beleive small changes cause greater changes,.

I have a dream work where everyone are happy and enjoying their time when we are together, so I know it's possible if we really want it.

Anyway I knew it will be a "quest" or an "adventure" so I won't give up.

I would also add that I would be proud if my kids share passions and hobbies that I have/had and that they discover another part of me. I think it's a beautiful aspect of Internet.
