Awesome portable CD player, and so damn cheap!

Panasonic SL-SX420, it's their $50 portable MP3-CD player. I don't know how to make bullets, but just imagine it's with bullets and not stars as I describe it ;-)

* It has a small remote, plays ALL types of MP3s(works with --alt preset standard -Z LAME 3.90.2, even ones with 32k frames, seems good to me).

* Has never skipped since I got it and I've gotten into one fight(almost got mugged by a bunch-a guys in brooklyn when I had to visit someone there, small fight, then 3 more guys came and I run, then 4 more, if I can run 6 blocks and it won't skip, good enough!).

*  Small, has a nice working remote(no display on it though), and you can sort it by folders(it'll say album 1, 2, 3, etc, every folder is another album, then you navigate within the folders).

* When you hit stop on the remote, when you hit play again it'll start off from that song. Not if you hit stop on the player though.

* Two EQ presets, X-bass and live. Live sounds like crap on most of the stuff, and I never use it, but the bass preset's great!

* No filename/ID3-tag support. If you don't sort stuff by folders, it'll be impossible to find anything. I just sort by folders, choose a folder to play, and sort the songs with a number put in them when I rip the CDs so I can treat it like a normal CD.

* The headphones that come with it sound like pure crap. I mean, I've used freebie headphones that are tolerable(I can't afford those $50+ headphones, they'd probably break since I run around with them a lot anyway or fall off my head), but these sounded so underwater and so muffled my $20 Sony behind the ear ones sounded like gold.

* Unlike the iRiver iMP 350 and below(not sure about the 400), it doesn't have that hiss in it. No hiss at all.

*Very stylish blue and silver design. Fancy.

I can't believe I almost was about to spend so much on an iRiver iMP that would've sounded worse(hiss) with a few extras. Panasonic and JVC are my top two audio companies!

I have a random question.  Currently I work landscaping and I usually use a discman when I mow.  I use shooting ear muffs (- 29 dB) with earbud earphones.  Think this unit will play back loud enough.  I had a panasonic before that wasn't even loud enough for use at a gym.  Now I have a sony discman and all is good, but I'd like mp3 playback

I've got an iRiver IMP-400 and never regretted one second that I bought it..
I paid 2200 NOK, and today that equals about 320$. As I've already said I don't regret buying it, but 50$ is incredibly cheap. I think the Panasonic looks quite good too. As I can see from the specs you mentioned the IMP-400 is in another league, but that should be expected when it costs about 200$ more (today).
Concerning the hiss some people talk about, I've never had a problem with that. If I concentrate I can hear some hiss when there is absolute silence, but I think people should hear it for themself before they're put off.
It may depend on the headphones you use, but with the Sennheiser MX300 I got with the player I have no problem.
So, if you got the money, and want to spend them all,  I recomend iRiver. The new IMP-550 looks even better than the 400.
