Sound issue with Philips in-ear headset

As an introductory note, I'm completely new to these forums and am not sure if I'm posting this under the right section. In case I've misplaced this, I'd gladly take some directions as to where I should post this topic instead. Thanks.

So, I just bought this new pair of earpieces by Philips. SHH2660 is the product name, to be precise. Noticeably, playback sounds muted and lacking in basses. Since there's a built-in microphone as well, I figured I would have to tweak around a little before getting things to work properly. Fidgeting the jack back and forth into my portable MP4 player, I noticed that at a very precise point, the sound gets a clear, stereo output. My previous earpieces had two black rings around the metal end of the jack. This one has three. Figure there's a connection to the fact that these are meant to be used for recording as well. At any rate, only when I calibrate the depth at which the jack is put into the socket or hold the microphone when fully inserted do I have clear sound. The earpieces came packed with a little extension cord, which also make the sound come out clear when used as a medium for the input. Here are a couple of pictures: The earpieces: The little extension/converting cord:

As much as I'm new to these forums, I'm new to audio hardware as well. If anyone could guide me through a possible solution, I'd be glad to do so. Hypothetical feedback's also really welcome.

Thanks a bunch for your attention and eventual feedback!

You did not mention what you are plugging these into. According to a review at: http://tech2.in.com/reviews/headphones/phi...-headset/184352
the extension cord is not to extend length but is a required piece for some phone's input jack. Maybe whatever you are plugging it into has the same jack style.

While the plug connects to HTC, iPhone, BlackBerry, LG, Motorola and Palm phones, Philips has an extra connector for Nokia, Samsung and Sony-Ericsson phones which has to be the attached to the plug.

Mentioned my MP4 player, right? Is that not specific enough? It's a Creative Zen MX portable audio player. Pic related: . Pretty sure it's not a compatibility issue in that regard. Not a phone at any rate either. Want me to try my laptop and DS, among several other things, as well?

I realize you are not using a phone. Simply struck me as unusual that your ear buds 3.5 plug did not universally work across phones and extrapolated it to music players.  Try whatever you want. Take an active role in troubleshooting or wait on others.

All I was offering.

Obviously the third connection is for the microphone, and is what is causing the problem.

There a solution to that, if it's the case? Been using the little converting/extension cord, which works as good as correctly putting in the regular, initial plug in. Kind of a pain, but I guess it's something I'll have to deal with.

Cool forums, especially the knowledge and software written.

All of the headphone/microphone combos that I have seen have terminated in two plugs, a stereo plug for the headphones and a mono plug for the microphone. The three-connection plug on yours I have only seen on cables that bring out stereo sound and composite video together.

If the adapter does what you need then it appears you will have to keep on using it.

I guess.

Tested the headphone on my laptop and my friend's iPod Touch without the additional cord and the sound was fine that way. Judging from that, I can assume it's because of the fact that my Zen MX doesn't support the external use of microphones. It does have an internal microphone for internal recording, though.

Creative probably does not read wikipedia when designing their stuff

"TRRS plugs do not work properly with a TRS stereo jack if the ground contact in the jack connects to the microphone contact on the plug. It is therefore a good practice to implement new TRS headphone jacks using a TRRS mechanical jack and connecting ground to sleeve as well as the second ring contact. This way such jacks will provide better compatibility with different TRRS cell phone headsets."

The Samsung OEM earbuds+microphone combo which came with my phone (and which uses a TRRS plug) works normally in my Sansa Clip+.
