A problem with Foobar FLAC/MP3 conversion

I've been using Foobar, very happily, for a couple of years and have never had a problem that I've been unable to "get round".

Today, though, I came across one that I haven't had before.

The FLAC files are showing the normal, limited file information (Track Number/Artist/Track Title) under "name" in my Windows Working folder but after copying & pasting to Foobar are showing only track duration (which did not show in my working folder).

Then, after conversion to MP3 the converted file shows as MP3 in my converted music folder - Nothing else!

I'd started, as normal, trying to convert the whole album in one hit but after finding a problem have attempted converting individual tracks.

MP3 is listed under "name" (where the song title would normally be shown) but there is NO further information and if I attempt to play then Windows informs me that it does not recognise the file extension ".".

Without conversion the files play perfectly well in Media Monkey.

Has anyone come across this problem before and (if so) can you please tell me a way round it?

Many thanks in advance.

If Windows Explorer can read tags from FLAC, they must be ID3 tags. This combination is not standard, which is probably why foobar2000 doesn’t read (and therefore doesn’t transfer) the tags.

What are you tagging the FLAC files with? You should let the command-line encoder handle it.

I'm sorry but I'm not a "techie".

The FLAC tag info' is only showing up in the "name" column in Windows Explorer, which is what I normally find happens.

The info' file that came with it is as follows:

Does that help in any way?

I don't understand the bit about "What are you tagging the FLAC files with? You should let the command-line encoder handle it." at all.

Sorry!

A problem with Foobar FLAC/MP3 conversion

Just some more information that I thought may help.

1) I downloaded the file in FLAC format - I did not encode it, so did not decide upon tag type/information.

2) It plays fine in Foobar.

3) When I look at file properties (in Foobar Library) it shows the same information as in Windows Explorer.

4) It is only when I copy & paste into the main Foobar window OR attempt to open using the file/open facility that this all seems to disappear and be replaced with duration.

I still don't understand the problem?

Get mp3tag and load the file into that. It'll tell you what format the tags are (i.e. FLAC or ID3 etc) and what values they have.

Maybe I'm being thick!!

I downloaded mp3tag, as you suggested, and tried loading files by using file/change directory/ and then opening the folder that the files are stored in.

All I then got was "no items match your search".

I tried doing this with both the original folder containing the FLAC files and also the folder I use for those that have been converted to mp3 and had the same result both times!

I'm obviously doing something wrong - can you please tell me what it is?

This is a weird one, but it sounds like your FLACs aren't tagged, and the conversion process you have setup relies on tags to produce the file names perhaps?

I tested it and managed to replicate what you see in Windows Explorer, but with my configuration of foobar i see the file name, duration, codec, bitrate, and comments - for both the FLAC and MP3 that I was testing with, and obviously this would differ from your setup.

To help us further, could you try copying the General information that is listed under Metadata when you view the properties of one of the FLAC files? Just right click on the word General and select Copy.
It should look like this:

I thought that it may help to show exactly what I am seeing.

1) This shows the information in my "Working Folder" - i.e. the files as downloaded.

I should add that this is what I "normally" would expect to see (Or something very similar).

2) This shows what is shown in Foobar when I either copy & paste or open an individual file.

This is not what I would "normally" expect to see.

3) This is the result of the Foobar conversion.

I've never seen this type of result before!!

I hope this may help someone to come up with a solution.

But, please, any queries please, please ask!!

Many thanks for the reply - very much appreciated.

Can you please tell me where/how to find the "Metadata"?

I've tried right clicking on one of the original downloaded files and opening properties but cannot find any mention of "Metadata" and the normal property info' does not give the detail you are asking for.

Sorry if I seem thick!

p.s. The conversion I have tried using is the same as I normally use

EDIT!

I found "Metadata" in Foobar - copy below:

I hope that helps!

p.s. There is a cue sheet with the download but I've never had to use one before when the download was, already, split into individual files.

In explorer: press Alt, then menu Tools -> Folder options -> View -> uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types".

Edit: that's not necessary. These FLAC files don't have proper Album/Artist/Title/etc tags. Nothing more.

If it was nothing more than that then why;

1) Are titles, track numbers and artist showing in explorer.

and

2) Are converted files then not recognised as mp3's?

I've experienced limited/next to no file information before but after conversion this can, normally, be added without a problem.

Here it can not be added!!

Different!!

Also, I've just checked and when I open a track (from Explorer), in Media Monkey, it displays the name of the track and name of the band!

Please look at my screen shots above!!

Also (on a totally different subject) have you never downloaded an album where the "names" are "embellished" by all sorts of rubbish - I have!!

FLAC files have always been different and seem to place all file info' under "name".

I would try converting to WAV format, then see whether the resulting WAV file will play.
Don't worry about how it looks in foobar, the point is whether it decodes back to it's original form and is readable.
If that works, you should try encoding the WAV file back to FLAC and compare the difference.

To me is sounds like something is wrong with the files you downloaded and the issue occurred from the original ripper's end. What that could be I have no idea.
As long as you can convert it to WAV then that's great, and you can put this down to, hopefully, a one-off freak occurrence.

Still, I'm stumped as to why Media Monkey doesn't complain...

apparently, your FLAC files are not tagged at all

since your file names consist of %tracknumber%. %artist% - %tracktitle%, you get the false impression that the windows explorer gives you those informations, whereas it simply shows the file names

to tackle your problem when converting them into MP3 file format, I'd suggest you drag the .cue sheet into foobar's playlist windows and convert the tracks from there

presuming the cue sheet has all neccessary information (tracknumber, artist & tracktitle), your resulting MP3s should be tagged properly as well

if that doesn't work, you should post the contents of that cue sheet
(open in wordpad/notepad and copy'n'paste into a codebox ... you'll find it to the left hand side "Insert: CODEBOX")

A problem with Foobar FLAC/MP3 conversion

btw, I guess you are using the default settings from foobar when converting to MP3
ie. "Convert each track to an individual file" using the default "name format" [%tracknumber%. ]%title%

and since there is no information about tracknumber and title in your flac files, the resulting output is named .mp3 ...
consequently, foobar overwrites any existing .mp3 with the next one and thus you'll only get a single mp3 at the end

oh and btw, you should be able to use MP3Tag's convert > filename - tag for properly tagging the flac files

in your case the pattern should be something like this:
%artist% - %album%\%track% %artist% - %title%

[edit]
on second sight, I noticed your cue sheet pointing to .wav files ... are you sure those are flac files ?

if they are indeed flac files, you'd have to edit the cue sheet and repleace each .wav with .flac and the cue sheet should be working in foobar

OK.

Can I first thank, sincerely, all those that have taken the time to reply.

However, I've been "jumping through hoops" attempting to put everyone's theories to the test and none have worked.

Sometimes I've kicked myself for even attempting to do that, because it is obvious that they have not read all of the data included in my posts.

So, is there anyone who is prepared to read, digest and then (hopefully) fully understand my problem and come up with a solution?

If so, I would be delighted to hear from you.

Also (on a totally different subject) have you never downloaded an album where the "names" are "embellished" by all sorts of rubbish - I have!!
One should have no sense of expectation, much less entitlement, when downloading music through improper channels. That risk comes with the territory!

It looks like the FLAC files do have tags, but the fields only contain a space or something. If there were no tags at all, you'd see the filename, but since there is a least a title tag with one or more spaces, you don't get anything useful.

Either remove the tags completely, or use a tool that can fill in tags from the filename. MP3Tag can (and probably foobar too, with the help of a plugin). If using MP3Tag, select the files, choose Convert / Filename - Tag, then "%track% %album% -
%title%" (without the quotes). If that's correct, you'll see three tag fields below. If it looks fine, click OK (or Preview, to check all files).

Problem solved!!

It turned out that the individual FLAC files had no tags at all, although quite why the track numbers/artist and song titles all showed still escapes me!!

I established this by using mp3Tag and then used the same program to add tag data to the FLAC files which then converted in Foobar like a dream!

Many thanks again to all that had a go at helping me, it was very much appreciated.

Um:

…Edit:…These FLAC files don't have proper Album/Artist/Title/etc tags. Nothing more.

Quote
titles, track numbers and artist showing in explorer.
They don't - explorer shows file names only.

apparently, your FLAC files are not tagged at all

since your file names consist of %tracknumber%. %artist% - %tracktitle%, you get the false impression that the windows explorer gives you those informations, whereas it simply shows the file name
