AAC gapless?

Hi folks

the AAC FAQ states that AAC standard has no mandatory gapless play, but some encoders can use it. itunes is not mentioned, but on the AAC description wiki page itunes from version 7 onwards is said to be gapless-able. What´s correct? On that note: do I need to manually switch in preferences if I want gapless or does the encoder detects automatically if I am ripping a concert without gaps or a normal pop album with gaps?

Thanks for your help
