Can WAV files be streamed?

Hi,

I've searched for ages on this, but can't find a definite answer...

Can WAV files be streamed, and if so, how?
By streaming I mean anything other than a progressive download which obviously can be done.

Thanks

If you are asking if there are servers like shoutcast or icecast that explicitely support uncompressed audio (.wav) as input, I believe there aren't.

The reason is simple, there's no logical reason to do so. If you're streaming over internet, the cost of streaming at such bitrate is excessive, and if you're doing so over a LAN, you don't need to stream it.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I realise it's a mad thing to do, but I've been specifically asked to look into the possibility of streaming high quality lossless audio for enthusiasts who have a rediculously fast internet connection. The other requirement is that the stream can be natively (without having to install codecs) played in Windows Media Player embedded in a web page.

Like I say, I know it's a bit mad, but WAV files would have suited perfectly. If it's simply impossible, what would you think would be the next best thing?

Thanks

Stream FLAC or Wavpack which doesn't waste everyone's bandwidth.
It's only audiophile if it's inconvenient.

Thanks, but that would require that the user install a codec/filter in order for it to play in WMP?

There is also WMA Lossless, so WMP would need no additional codecs installed.
Ceterum censeo, there should be an "%is_stop_after_current%".

KEXP in Seattle has had an uncompressed 16/44 stream since October 2000 (as well as a rolling two-week uncompressed archive).

They use WMP, but I don't know how they're handling things on the server side.
"Not sure what the question is, but the answer is probably no."

Thanks pawelq and mixminus1 - will look into those 2 ideas.

Dang, do radio stations get their music unbutchered?

KEXP still uses CD players (although I'd guess not exclusively - they play quite a few downloaded singles, or do bands send those out as CDs?), and they have digital broadcast consoles, so it's possible that their uncompressed stream really is, at least for the music that originates on CD.

Judging from both the sound and looking at waveforms, they've "experimented" with dynamics processing over the years, but recently they seem to be leaving well enough alone, although they do usually keep things a few dB down from full scale.

Every time I hear something on the radio it always sounds awesome.  I know they don't get retail CDs shipped to them...
